A Detailed Lesson Plan in MAPEH

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

a. discuss the origin and cultural background of selected Philippine Festival;

b. identify the religious and non – religious festival;

c. treasure the importance of the different Festivals and;

d. create movements of a selected Philippine Festivals.

A. Daily Routine
“Good morning class”! - Good morning sir!

Let us all stand and let us pray. - The students stand up for a prayer

Before you sit, please pick the litters under your


chair and arrange your chair properly.

Please take your seats. - The students take their seats.

How are you today? - We’re fine sir!

B. Motivation
Before we start our lesson, let’s have an activity. This
activity will help you determine our lesson for today.

I prepared a game called “FIESTA MASAYA”.


I want you to group yourselves into three (3) groups.

Group one (1) will group together at left side, group


two (2) at the middle and group three (3) at the right
side.

Go now to your group silently. - The students will move in their own respective
group)
Are you familiar with the different festivals here at the
Philippines? - Yes/no sir!

I have a lot of jumbled letters to flash. All you need to


do is to write your answer in the cut-outs that I gave.

I will give you five (5) seconds to write your answer, if I


will say STOP you should to stop writing then you will
raise your answer at the same time.

Therefore, the most earned points will be declared as


the winner.

Take note: Wrong spelling is not counted

Class I know that you have ideas regarding our topic
because you have already watched festivals. Am I right
class? - Yes sir!

Good! Now what comes first to your mind when you


hear the word Festival? - Sir, it is an event where they celebrate
something like their patrons.

Correct! Another? - Sir it is an event where they shows and


celebrate their traditions and beliefs.

Excellent! Now let us define what Festival is. Kindly


read. - Festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a
community and centering on some beliefs and
its religion or traditions.
There are two (2) types of Philippine Festival.
The religious and non – religious festival.

What is the difference between the two (2)?

Anyone from the group? - Sir the difference between the two that the
religious festival is all about saints while non-
religious festival it’s all about the bountiful
harvest.
That’s right!

The difference between the two (2) is. Kindly read. - The religious festival, in honor of a certain
religious icon while non – religious festival it is
thanks giving or celebration of peoples industry
and bountiful harvest.

That’s right!

There are famous festivals in the Philippines but I need


only festivals here at Cagayan will you give an example
of festivals here in Cagayan that you know? - cabibi festival sir at Lal-lo

Correct! What else? - aramang festival sir at Aparri

Great! All your answers are correct! Based on your


answers, we will focus more on the five (5) festivals in
the Philippines.

But before I reveal the five (5) festivals, I will group you
into 5 groups. This activity is called “Team Learning”.

I will give an envelope each group.


Inside the envelopes are sets of festivals with
keywords. I will play a video then I want you to observe
each video to determine what festival is being
presented. The group who will identify the video that is
being presented will shout “Viva” and paste the
corresponding festival in front with short explanation.

That’s correct! The first video is all about


Panagbenga Festival. Let us define what Panagbenga
Festival is. Please read. - The flower festival of Baguio City which is
celebrated for month long through parade of
floats that are decorated with flowers.
This is being held every month of February as a way to
commemorate the rise up from the devastation of the
1990 Luzon earthquake.

Very good! Again when and where does the


Panagbenga Festival celebrate? - Baguio city sir and held every month of
February.
Excellent! Let’s proceed to the next video, take a look

Great! Very good! So the second video is all about Ati –
atihan Festival. The Ati – atihan Festival is very lively,
colorful and it is a weeklong fiesta. It is known as the
mother of all festivals in the Philippines. It is a feast
held annually In honor of Sto. Niño in the island of
Kalibo, Aklan. The celebration begins in the 3rd week of
January.

Is there anyone who knows the meaning of ati – atihan


festival? - Sir the meaning of Ati-atihan is “to be like an
Aetas.”
That’s right! The meaning of Ati – atihan is “to be like
an Aetas” or “make believe in atis”.

Ati – atihan is a celebration of pact between Spaniards


and Aetas. Do you have any idea why? - Sir because the Spaniards brought Sto. Niño in
the Philippines.
That’s correct! Spaniards brought Sto. Niño in the
Philippines

They yell “Viva Sto. Niño” meaning “Mabuhay Sto.


Niño”.
Again, when and where does Ati – atihan celebrate? - Sir they celebrate Ati-atihan Festival every
third week of January in Kalibo, Aklan.

Great the third video is all about Kadayawan Festival.
Kindly read. - A thanksgiving festival because of bountiful
harvest. It is held every third week of August in
Davao City. It is called as the “King of all Festivals
in the Philippines.”

- It’s name derives from the friendly greeting


“Madayaw”.
Okay, so Kadayawan Festival celebrates every 3rd week
of August in Davao and it came from the word
“Madayaw”, a friendly greeting of Davaoenios.

Again class, Kadayawan came from what word? - Sir Kadayawan came from the word Madayaw.

Excellent! How about the place and date of - Sir Kadayawan Festival is held every third week
Kadayawan Festival? of August in Davao City.

Very good! It seems that you really understand


our lesson. Here’s the fourth video. Observe carefully

Yes, that’s right! The fourth video is the Sinulog
Festival. Kindly read. - The festival is characterized by a very long
parade with many groups of people dressed in
colorful costume, finding their way through the
streets while dancing the Sinulog.

- The Sinulog dance is now the traditional ritual


dance in honor of Sto. Niño.
This is an annual festival being held every third Sunday
of January in Cebu City, Maasin City, Southern Leyte,
Balingasag and Misamis Oriental in the Philippines.

Again, who is the center of celebration in Sinulog


Festival? - Sir Sinulog Festival centers Sto. Niño.
Great! Now, pay attention to this video.

That’s right! The video presents the Moriones
Festival.

Kindly read. - The “Moriones” are men and women in


costumes and masks replicating the garb of
biblical Roman Soldiers as interpreted by local
folks.

When we say Mercenaries it means soldier. - The participants use morion masks to depict
the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries
within the story of the Passion of the Christ.

- The Moriones refers to the masked and


costumed penitents who march around the
town for seven days searching for St. Longinus.

- They celebrate Moriones Festival every Holy


Week in Marinduque.

- Who among you know the story of St. Longinus? - (students will share their ideas)

That’s right! St. Longinus is a Roman centurion who was


blind in one eye. He struck Jesus Christ in the body, and
then the blood of Jesus Christ dropped to his eyes and
magically healed his blind eye.

Again, when and where does the celebration of


Moriones Festival being held? - Sir they celebrate Moriones Festival every Holy
Week in Marinduque.
Very good! Who is the center of celebration of
Moriones Festival? - Sir the center of celebration in Moriones
Festival is St. Longinus and the Passion of the
Christ.
That’s right! Now, I have question, do you think

E. Generalization

To see if you really understand our lesson, let’s have


another activity this is an individual recitation.

I will flash the pictures and the festivals are given to


determine what place it’s originated.
Then, before you answer I will ask you if “TAGA SAAN
KA” if your answer is correct the music will play
automatically and you will dance in any steps and if
your answer is wrong the music will not play.

related to the festival you are going to dance.
I’ll give you five (5) minutes to practice and to be
performed in one (1) minute per group.
