BASIC ELEMENTS OF A POEM
1. STANZA – is a series of lines grouped together.
For examples: couplet (2 lines), tercet (3 lines), and quatrain (4 lines)
2. RHYME – is the repetition of similar sounds.
For Example:
I saw a fairy in the wood,
He was dressed all in green,
He drew his word while I just stood,
And realized I`d been seen.
3. RHYME SCHEME – is the continuation of rhyme.
For Example:
I saw a fairy in the wood, A
He was dressed all in green, B
He drew his word while I just stood, A
And realized I`d been seen. B
4. METER – is the basic structural make-up of a poem.
5. RHYTHM – is the music made by the stressed and unstressed syllables.
For Example:
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
6. SYMBOLISM – symbols that convey ideas.
Examples:
Rainbow – represent Hope.
Dove – symbol of peace
7. IMAGERY – device used for readers to create an image that encompasses the five senses.
Examples:
- It was dark and dim in the forest.
The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images.
- The children were screaming and shouting in the fields.
“Screaming” and “Shouting” appeal to our sense of hearing or auditory sense.

- He was a Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, and also a painter and one of his famous and notable work was the poem “God said, “I made a man”. - This poem contained some of the basic elements of a poem

And oh,
He was lovely to behold!
But in his hands held he a bow.
Aimed at me who created

But I was curious
