12 QUINTESSENTIAL HOTT Army Lists for A GAME OF GROANS AND GRUNTS

A Game of Groans and Grunts battle for the Wall and the Seven Kingdoms, Winter is Coming
HOTT armies :
24 army points (12 predetermined, 12 chosen) out of a possible 33-34 ! Up to 5 different unit
types at any one time out of a possible 6-7. 16-30 possible elements in lists ranging from
Daenerys with 16 and the Others and minions with up to 30. In terms of armies fielded
Daenerys can lay down the smallest army of 10 elements and the Others and minions the
largest army of 20 elements. Pure quintessential dead brilliant !

The Night’s Watch Army (NW colour : black and grey with black wash, winter flock) :
A Blades army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of 7 : Paladin
/ Hero, Artillery / Cleric, Blades, Riders-Riders General and Shooters (34 AP maxed
out). 17-24 total elements in list. The Watch are armed with dragonglass when fighting
the Others. Unique unit type is the Artillery.

1 x Paladin @ 4AP (Jon Snow, squeaky clean before he « knew » Ygritte) OR 1 x Hero
@ 4AP (Jon Snow, the Bastard, with Ghost, his white direwolf, Ghost and Valyrian steel
sword Longclaw) = Mounted

3-8 x Blades @ 2AP (Night’s Watch Rangers, "For The Watch !") = Foot

1-2 x Riders @ 2AP (Night’s watch ranger patrols, including 1 compulsory Rider General,
Lord Commander Mormont with his raven) = Mounted

0 or 2 x Artillery @ 3AP (Catapults/trebuchets and/or ballistae firing stone or bolt) = Foot


OR 0-1 x Cleric @ 3AP (Coldhands, riding a great elk with a flock of ravens), only IF the
Others are the foe = Foot

0-2 Shooters @ 2AP (Night’s watch archers) = Foot

Stronghold : Gate in the Ice Wall.

Optional Wildling Allies for the Night’s Watch against non Wildling foes (12 AP maxed
out) :
After selecting their 12 predetermined army points, the Night’s Watch select 8AP’s of
Wildling Allies units from 2 out of the 3 unit types in the following list (and forgo the
selection of Night’s Watch Artillery and Shooters). Their remaining points must be selected
from the Night’s Watch Blades and/or Riders. They are thus still restricted to having no more
than 5 different unit types at any one time.

0 or 2 x Beast @ 2AP (Skinchanger direwolves) = Mounted

0 or 4 x Horde @ 1AP (Wildling Free Folk) = Foot

Wildling Army (W colours : grey, white and rust with brown wash, winter flock) : A
Warband / Hordes army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of
6 : Warband, Behemoth, Sneaker, Beast / Flyer and Horde (34 AP maxed out). 21-26
total elements in lists. Unique unit type is the Flyer.

3-8 x Warband @ 2AP (Wildling warriors with Thenns and Hornfeet, including 1
compulsory Warband General, Mance, the King Beyond The Wall as Tribal Chieftain,
unless fighting the Boltons) = Foot

1 x Beast @ 2AP (Skinchanger snow bears) = Mounted OR 1 x Flyer @ 2AP (Skinchanger


birds of prey) = Ariel

4-9 x Horde @ 1AP (Wildling Free Folk including their close range bowmen) = Foot

0-1 x Behemoth @ 4AP (Mammoth or Giant Wun Wun) = Mounted

0-1 x Sneaker @ 3AP (Wildling wall climbers, ambushers and raiders) = Foot

Stronghold : Camp in the Skirling Pass or Skinchanger’s nest

Optional Jon Snow as an ally for the Wildlings against the Others or the Boltons, with
the extra option of Arryn Knights against the Boltons (12 AP maxed out) :
After selecting their 12 predetermined army points, the Wildlings select the hero, Jon Snow,
who is also used as the Wildling General, as shown below and also have the option of Arryn
Cavalry IF fighting the Boltons. If Arryn Knights are selected they enter randomly on a roll
of 5 or 6 to be tested for at the beginning of every turn from turn 2 onwards until they enter.
They then come on at any point on the map edge that the Wildling player wishes.
Any remaining AP’s can only be selected from the Wildlings list but they are still restricted to
having no more than 5 different unit types at any one time.

1 x Hero General @ 4AP (Jon Snow, the Bastard, with Ghost, his white direwolf, Ghost and
Valyrian steel sword Longclaw) = Mounted

2-4 x Knights @ 2AP (Arryn Knights of the Vale) = Mounted

Arryn army (A colours : sky blue and white with black wash, winter flock) : A Knights /
Riders Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of 7 : Knights,
Riders, Sneaker, Horde / Airboat, Warband / Shooters (34 AP maxed out). 16-18
elements in lists. The Arryn army has only 11 predetermined AP and thus 13 chosen AP.
Unique unit type is the Airboat.

2-7 x Knights @ 2AP (Arryn Knights of the Vale, including the option of a Knight General,
Harrold Hardyng, « Harry the Heir ») = Mounted
2-4 x Riders @ 2AP (Arryn Cavalry, including the option of a Rider General, Harrold
Hardyng, « Harry the Heir ») = Mounted

1 x Sneaker @ 3AP (Lord Petyr Baelish, « Littlefinger ») = Foot

0-3 x Horde @ 1AP (Camp followers, horse grooms) = Foot OR 0-1 x Airboat @ 3 AP
(represents the mountain castle dropping missiles from a height) = Aerial

0-3 x Warband @ 2AP (Vale mountain clans) = Foot OR 0-3 Shooters @ 2AP (Arryn
archers) = Foot

Stronghold : The Eyrie

Others and minions Winter Army (O colours : bone white and blue with black wash,
winter flock) : A Hordes / Lurkers Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time,
out of a choice of 7 : Magician General, Lurker, Horde, God / Riders and Hero /
Sneaker, (35 AP maxed out). 29-30 elements in lists. Beware that if the Others lose all
their ‘Others’ elements : their Magician General, Hero AND their God they have lost,
because these ‘Others’ units animate the minions. Of course, if the God or the Hero is
not played they cannot be lost. Unique unit type is the Magician General.

1 Magician General @ 4AP (Others = Whitewalker Wraith Knight’s King) = Foot

2-6 Lurkers @ 1AP (Ice zombie Wights = whitewalker minions) = Foot

6-17 Horde @ 1AP (Zombies or Skeletons = whitewalker minions) = Foot

0-1 God @ 4AP (The Great Other) = Ariel (if throw a 6) OR 0-2 x Riders @ 2AP (Skeleton

The Others can exchange the option of a God for an Ice Dragon.

Stannis Baratheon, the King at the Wall (SB colours : yellow, black, orange and red
with black wash except God, Melisandre and Shadow Assassin with brown wash,
winterflock) : A Spears Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a
choice of 7 : God / Sneaker, Knights / Blades, Magician, Spears / Spears General,
Shooters (34 AP maxed out). 19 elements in list. Unique unit types are the Spears
General and the Magician.
2-3 x Knights @ 2AP (Sworn Swords and Bannermen) = Mounted OR 2-3 Blades @ 2AP
(dismounted knights, only if the optional canonical Stannis rule is applied and Melisandre
isn’t selected) = Foot

2-8 x Spears @ 2AP (Militia Spearmen including 1 compulsory Spear General, Stannis
Baratheon, "Stannis! Stannis! Stannis!", the King at The Wall) = Foot

2 x Shooters @ 2AP (Crossbowmen) = Foot

0-1 x Magician @ 4AP (Melisandre, Shadowbinder, The Red Witch, Priestess of R’hllor, the
Lord of Light) = Foot

0-1 God @ 4AP (Firegod, R'hllor, the Lord of Light, but only permitted if Melisandre is also
selected because she is needed to invoke it) = Ariel (if throw a 6) OR 0-1 Sneaker @ 3AP
(Shadow Assassin sent by the Shadowbinder, but only permitted if Melisandre is also selected
because she is needed to send it) = Foot

Stronghold : Stannis’ Yellow Pavilion

Optional canonical Stannis rule :


If Melisandre isn’t selected Stannis cannot select Knights at all, but instead, Blades can be
chosen as dismounted knights. This rule simulates the way Stannis loses his grasp of
Westeros tactics when Melisandre isn’t by his side and becomes a lesser general, with his
Knights downgraded to horseless Knights. This rule also reduces the maximum number of
Stannis spears to 6 if Melisandre is chosen, but 8 spears are still selectable if Melisandre isn’t
on the table.

Renly Baratheon army (R colours : green and gold with brown wash, summer flock) : A
Spears Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of 6 : Paladin,
Hero, Knights / Blades, Spears, Shooters (34 AP maxed out). 17 elements in list.

1 x Hero @ 4AP (Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers, Lord Commander of the Rainbow
Guard) = Mounted

2-3 x Knights @ 2AP (Rainbow Guard, including 1 compulsory Knight General, Renly
Baratheon) = Mounted OR 0-2 x Blades @ 2AP (In the event that Renly, the General, is
killed, his remaining Knights, IF ANY, are automatically converted into the dismounted
Knights of Summer)

2-8 x Spears @ 2AP (Militia « Antler » Spearmen) = Foot

0-1 x Paladin @ 4AP (Brienne, the Blue, of Tarth) = Mounted

0-2 x Shooters @ 2AP (Crossbowmen) = Foot

Stronghold : Renly’s Green Pavilion


Greyjoy Army (G colours : grey blue, green, brown and bronze with green wash,
summer flock) : A Warband / Lurkers Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one
time, out of a choice of 6 : Cleric / God, Spears, Warband, Shooters and Water Lurkers
(34 AP maxed out). 19 elements in list. Unique unit types are the Cleric and Water
Lurkers.

3-6 x Warband @ 2AP (Ironborn Reavers "What is dead may never die !", Drowned Men,
including 1 compulsory Warband General, deemed to be Euron Crow's Eye, Victarion
Greyjoy or Asha Greyjoy) = Foot

2-4 x Water Lurkers (Raider Boats) @ 1AP = Foot

2-4 x Spears @ 2AP (Ironborn soldiers) = Foot

0-1 x Cleric @ 3AP (Aeron Damphair) = Foot OR 0-1 God @ 4AP (Optional Drowned

Stark Army (S colours : grey, white and brown with brown wash, winter flock) : A
Spears / Lurkers Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of 6 :
Hero General, Riders, Spears, Shooters, Lurkers / Warband (34 AP maxed out). 20
elements in list. Unique unit type is the Hero General.

1 x Hero General @ 4AP (Rob Stark, the "King in the North !", his grey direwolf,
Greywind) = Mounted

2-3 x Riders @ 2AP (Stark Cavalry) = Mounted

2-8 x Spears @ 2AP (half are Stark and half are Northern Levies, of which are Karstark and
Umber bannermen) = Foot

0-2 x Shooters @ 2AP (Longbowmen) = Foot

Bolton Army (B colours : pink and red with crimson wash, winter flock) : A Spears /
Riders Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a choice of 6 : Riders,
Spears, Blades, Sneaker / Beast, Shooters (34 AP maxed out). 18 elements in list. Unique
unit types are the Blades General or Shooters General (it is compulsory to opt for one or
the other).

Spears from the Stark list)

Spears, Behemoth, Warband (35 AP maxed out). 20 elements in list. Unique unit type is
the Artillery General, if selected.

1 Knights General, Tywin Lannister) = Mounted OR 2-3 x Blades @ 2AP (Dismounted

must opt for one or the other in their choice of non predetermined army points ) / Paladin
(34 AP maxed out). 16 elements in list. Unique unit types are the Aerial hero General, if
selected, the Flyer General, if selected and the Dragon.

A Horde / Shooters ‘Saracen’ Army. Up to 5 different unit types at any one time, out of a
choice of 7 : Knights, Hordes, Shooters, Hero / Spears, Sneaker, Riders (34 AP maxed
out). 19 elements in list. Unique unit type is the Horde General.

1-2 x Knights @ 2AP (Dornish Chariots) = Mounted

4-7 x Horde @ 1AP (Dornishmen host including 1 compulsory Horde General, Prince
Doran Martell) = Foot

3-4 x Shooters @ 2AP (Dornish archers with double-curved bows) =Foot

0-4 x Spears @ 2AP (Sunspear Guards with Areo Hotah and his longaxe) = Foot

0-1 x Hero @ 4AP (Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne) =Mounted OR 0-2 x
Riders @ 2AP (Sand Steeds) = Mounted

0-1 x Sneaker @ 3AP (The Sand Snakes) = Foot

Stronghold : A Middle Eastern Castle

Optional nota bene :


After choosing their army points any player stuck on 23 pts can select a one point element, of
EITHER a horde element represented by the children of the forest or camp followers OR a
lurker element represented by a hired Braavosi water dancer, spy or assassin. If such a 1
pointer is needed, Stannis, Greyjoy, Bolton and Lannister should select the Lurker element,
whereas the Night’s Watch, Wildlings and Others should select the Horde element. When
such Horde or Lurker elements are added to a list to make up the numbers, it’s the only
exception where the 5 unit type limit restriction can be broken.
