Geotechnical Investigation Report
Geotechnical Investigation Report
a.) INTRODUCTION
The assessment of the geotechnical conditions is based on the findings from the actual
field and laboratory test results which were conducted last June 22 - 30, 2019 by RAJ Plans,
Designs and Consultancy.
The purpose of this subsurface exploration package is for the proposed Eight (8) Storey
Hospital Building located along Lapu – lapu St., Poblacion, Tacurong City as per request of
Tacurong Doctors’ Hospital as per requirements for the application of building permit and
be able to determine the applicable foundation necessary for their proposed construction.
Inclusions on this report are the recommendations for allowable bearing capacity for the
design criteria of foundation and foundation system of the subsurface structure.
The objective of this soil exploration is to collect/gather samples in every 1.5 meter depth
interval for at least twenty meters (20m) depth from existing ground or at certain depth
where standard penetration test could no longer advance. Three boreholes sampling were
done within the building area where it shall be erected.
The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) classified as ASTM D-1586-67 is employed to determine
the in situ allowable soil bearing capacity at various depths for surfaced loaded footings of
various widths. It is also used to determine the allowable frictional stress capacity of soil
profile at every layer of various depths for a pile footing foundation. Soil sampling was
taken at regular interval 1.50 meters. Upon encountering a hard type soil formation, drilling
procedures through water jetting is employed and extraction of sample through core
drilling. Standard Penetration Test activity is taken out upon reaching a sandy layer or
water table level. Another methodology will be employed for a non-cohesive soil.
The extracted/collected soil samples were taken to the soil laboratory for various
laboratory tests in determining the necessary soil characteristics and properties.
The actual field activities consisted of drilling boreholes with Standard Penetration Test for
the boreholes. The boreholes were done by advanced wash boring to a specified boring
depths. A drill pipe was drilled to a specified depth by means of water jetting. Then the split
spoon sampler will be embed to a certain depth through an extension rod and will be
driven by a drop hammer. The Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at every 1.50
meters interval by driving the split spoon sampler of 1½” diameter and a length of 18” (45
centimeters) in three successive segments of 6” (15 cm) using a 140 lbs (64 kgs)free falling
drop hammer at a height of 30”.
The number of blows (drops of hammer) required to penetrate the three layers of 6” spoon
sampler are recorded. The number of blows of the last two segments (middle third – last
1
third of spoon sampler) are added to give the N-value (blows) of a particular 18” stretch, a
measure of density or consistency of the soil.
Soil samples were extracted through this spoon sampler. Upon reaching the water table
level on this particular site, hard strata are eminent, the spoon sampler experienced a
longer period to penetrate the entire 18” (45 cm) length and no soil sample retained in the
spoon sampler.
All collected/gathered soil samples were properly labeled and stored in a plastic container
to ensure any disturbances with proper care and handling. Then it was brought to soil
laboratory for a specific laboratory testing in determining the necessary results for bearing
capacity calculations.
The lot area has an adjacent three storey residential building. Sub-surface water is within
1.50 meter depth from existing ground. Texture of upper layer soil is composed of silty sand
or fine sands. Erosion is highly eminent during excavation.
Collected soil samples from every specific depth, the 1.50m interval were subjected to the
following laboratory tests in accordance with the procedures specified in the current ASTM
standard as described herein:
The method in determining water (moisture) content of soil by weight. Moisture content of
soil is the ratio of the mass of pore water in a given soil mass to the mass of the solid
material particles, given in percentage.
Sieve analyses were performed to determine the gradational characteristics of the soil in
order to come up with soil classification information.
Atterberg Limits test of fined grained materials (i.e., silty or clayey) were performed to
come up with soil classification data and to determine moisture content at which the
behavior of soil changes.
2
The plastic limit of soil is the water content (percentage in weight) of the oven dried soil
after reaching the condition between the plastic and semi-solid states.
The plasticity index is defined as the difference between the liquid limit and plastic limits of
soil.
The liquid limit of soil is the water content (percentage in weight) of the oven dried soil after
reaching the condition between the liquid states and plastic states.
This standard classifies soils from any geographic location into categories representing the
results of prescribed laboratory tests to determine the particle-size characteristics, the liquid
limit, and the plasticity index.
The various groupings of this classification system have been devised to correlate in a
general way with the engineering behavior of soils. This standard provides a useful first step
in any field or laboratory investigation for geotechnical engineering purposes.

Settlement
Settlement behavior is directly influenced by the compressibility of the soil material. Fine
grained soils, like silts and clays have generally time-dependent deformation due to its low
permeability. Thus dissipation of excess pore water in the voids of fine-grained soils takes
considerable time and in consolidation it takes a long term.
Immediate settlement reveal on the granular or coarse materials like sand which results to
a very minimal vertical deformation due to its high elastic properties.
The followings are the ground condition criteria in considering liquefaction potential:
SPT N-value is less than 15
Soil particle diameter at 50% passing is between 0.02mm and 2.0mm
Saturated soil material
Non-plastic (cohesionless)
Liquidity Index (IL) > 0
Thus the site has issue on liquefaction at the upper sandy layers.
Shallow Foundation
For local shear failure, Meyerhof’s Equation, the general bearing capacity equation is used
in obtaining the ultimate bearing capacity.
7
ΔHi = qB (1 - μ²)If
E
qa = 0.41Ncor ρa
Ncor = cN cW N
The unit weight of soil used in the equations for bearing capacity are effective unit weights.
With the rising water table, the subsoil becomes saturated and the unit weight of
submerged soil is greatly reduced. The reduction of this unit weight results in the decrease
in the ultimate bearing capacity of soil.
For a five storey building and above, the minimum recommended foundation be used in
designing is a combined footing foundation scheme. As on the site condition, the
designing engineer shall consider the effect of the erosion to the adjacent lot during
excavation.
8
The values above are applicable for footing width which is smaller than 4.0 meters under
non-seismic conditions.
The above values has already incorporated a geotechnical factor of safety of at least 3.0
against shear failure and are controlled by the limiting settlement magnitude of not greater
to 25mm.
The following values of geotechnical parameters are supplied for further analyses.
Sand materials
Φ = 32.5° - 37.5°
μ = 0.20 – 0.40 (Poisson’s ratio)
Υ = 18 – 19 kN/m³ (unit wt of soil)
Es = 10,000 - 30,000 kPa (modulus of elasticity)
c = 0 kPa
F.) LIMITATIONS
The foregoing assessments and recommendations are based on the actual exploration
and laboratory tests results. Should there be any significant variation or other conditions
become evident in the soil stratification encountered during the implementation phase,
the undersigned shall be informed immediately so that necessary supplemental
recommendations shall be made in accordance to engineering principles and practices.
And it will be necessary to re-evaluate the recommendation of this report.
