Nehemiah 7:1“Then it was, when the wall was built and I had hung the doors,
when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed.”
The Lord does not want us to be stuck, in the same status, in the same position, we
must share the door to door of Nehemiah’s experience in our Ministry. We must develop
a strong character, have a foundation, morals, and advance in all other doors.
Jerusalem is a figure of our soul. A soul that Nehemiah found damaged, burned,
destroyed, humiliated, and torn down. Such can be the state of our soul because of sin
and the life the world gave us. Now we long for our soul to be restored, healed, raised,
built, so that we can help others in their restoration process. If we restore our lives, we
restore our own doors.
The Gate or Door is a universal symbol that implies transition, giving way from one
domain to another. It is the place of passage between two completely different states,
where the known becomes unknown. The door is an opening that allows us to enter and
exit. Going through a door is a change of level, of medium, of center, of life, to move to
another place. In the world where we live an experience in three dimensions, the doors
and windows we build are usually rectangular. But a door can take many shapes and
not necessarily be the rectangles we think of. The door could also be virtual or
imaginary but exist nevertheless in our minds.
So, let’s begin our tour. The first step is taken in verse one: If you have been a Christian
long enough, you’ll know that God likes to hide things. What I mean by that is He likes
to hide important truths in places that you wouldn’t initially expect to find them... until
you start to dig that is!
Nehemiah chapter 3 is one of those places. On the surface it is a chapter discussing the
10 different gates of Jerusalem and the specific builders that helped rebuild them. But
that’s just the surface.
When you lift the lid and look a little deeper you find that God has hidden within those
gates’ significant spiritual truths for both an individual’s Christian life as well as His
prophetic plan for the ages. Now that’s quite a big call I know but stay with me! The
order and position of each gate is also very specific and gives us insight into the journey
that God takes each of His children on as well as the journey of the church until the
return of Jesus Christ. So, for each gate we will explore it’s meaning for both the
personal and prophetic significance.
As we stand back to better examine the massive stones of the walls, they begin to
speak. They have a message for us, for you and I are building walls – spiritual walls, if
you please – with these same gates which hold the same message. Today God has
given us a subcontract that you and I might build these walls of Jerusalem in our own

hearts and lives. Nehemiah, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, detailed the different
gates.
This picture is an important aspect of the life of believers. Beginning with salvation at
the sheep gate, Nehemiah moves on to service at the fish gate. Then the old gate
speaking of God's ways, followed by humility at the valley gate. He then proceeds
through the cleansing of the dung gate on to the renewing of the Holy Spirit at the
gate of the fountain. Then on to the water gate speaking of God's Word. The horse
gate is a symbol of war and reminds us of the spiritual warfare believers must engage
in. The east gate speaks of Christ's coming while the gate of Mikphad speaks of the
judgment that will follow. Considering these symbols, let us arise and go to the
wall for God!
Will you enter through each of these gates of spiritual growth? Will you press on to
maturity in the Christian life? This is not gained by knowledge alone, but by service and
a life of faith. Each one of these gates sends us a message that applies to us today.
Let’s us pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for such a lesson on the wall and gates.
Teach us Father to build walls to lift people up. Each of the gates is a progressive
breakthrough in our lives. Nehemiah did not weep because the doors were burned
and walls knocked down, nor on the physical side as: the stone, the wood and the
keys; he cried out to you Lord, but it was because he saw the condition of the
people. Lord help us see the world as you see it. Amen!
