INTRODUCTION
The World Wide Web (www) was created in 1990 by CERN physicist Tim Berners lee.
On 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to use for anyone.
Before the introduction of HTML &n HTTP, other protocols such as file transfer protocol & the
gopher protocol were used to retrieve individual files from a server. These protocols offer a simple
directory structure which the user navigates & choose files to download. Documents were most
often presented as plain text files without formatting, or were encoded in word processor formats.
OVERVIEW
Website have many functions and can be used in various fashions; a website can be a personal
website, a commercial website, a government Website or a non-profit organization website.
Website can be the work of an individual, a business or other Organization, and are typically
dedicated to a particular topic or purpose. Any website can contain a hyperlink to any other
website, so the distinction between individual sites, as perceived by the user, can be blurred.
Websites are written in, or dynamically converted to, HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) &
are accessed using a software using a software interface classified as a user agent. Web page can
be viewed or otherwise accessed from a range of computer- based & Internet-enabled devices of
various sizes, including desktop computers, laptop, PDAs & cell phones.
Website is hosted on a computer system known as a Web server, also calls an HTTP server. These
term can also refer to the software that runs on these which retrieves & deliver the web pages in
response to requests from the website’s users. Apache is the most commonly used web server
software (according to net craft statics) & Microsoft’s also commonly used. Some alternative, such
as Lighted, Hiawatha or Cherokee, are fully functional & lightweight.

TYPES OF WEBSITE
1. Blog
A blog is a website that’s regularly updated, run by one person or a small group, and is normally
written in a laid-back style.
In terms of the content, when it comes to blogging, the world really is your oyster. Hell, there’s
even a blog about oysters!
Even if your site won’t be a blog, it’s still a handy extra feature to add interest and authority to
your site. Just make sure you’re committed to keeping it fresh and updated!
Page | 10
2. Business
A business website is any kind of website that represents your business. Even small local
businesses need a simple online presence (see ‘Brochure’ below) to be taken seriously in today’s
digitally-minded world.
A website is one of the easiest ways to show what your business is all about, and find those all-
important new customers. Your website should have an about page, and details of how people can
find you. After that, the sky’s the limit. Check out our ‘Ecommerce’ section below for businesses
that plan to sell directly through their website.
Page | 11
3. Brochure
When categorizing websites by functionality, a ‘brochure’ website is the simplest type of Brochure
websites typically only have a few pages, and are used by small businesses that need a simple
online presence. They effectively act as an online brochure, giving an overview of what the
business is, and how you can get in touch. The content on these websites is generally pretty ‘static’
– that’s to say it’s rarely updated.
4. Crowdfunding
Page | 12
Crowd funding is the modern way to fund your idea. From the sublime to the ridiculous, crowd
funding was the secret to bringing everything from fidget cubes to meat soap to market.
Crowd funding websites work by taking ‘pledges’ of different amounts from lots of people, in
order to hit the target amount needed to produce the product. Popular crowd funding websites
include Kick starter and Crowd cube.
5. Ecommerce
Page | 13
An ecommerce website is any website that directly sells a product or service. Not to be confused
with a business website, with an ecommerce website you can add products or services into your
cart, and pay for them through the site. Ecommerce makes up an ever-increasing portion of sales in
the US.
6. Educational
Page | 14
The term ‘educational’ covers a broad range of websites.
Educational websites use any combination of games, articles, videos and images to educate their
audience. These might be geared towards fun learning for children, or offer courses to adults, such
as Coursera and EdX.
7. Media or Entertainment
Page | 15
Media websites contain regularly updated content on current affairs, weather, sports and
entertainment. News sites like CNN and entertainment sites like ELLE both fall into this category.
The content on media sites is dynamic, meaning it’s updated regularly. Big media sites will publish
multiple articles and videos every single day.
8. Nonprofit
Page | 16
A website is one of a nonprofit's most important tools. It helps you collect donations, spread the
word about your mission and get your name out into the world. ... They make creating a website so
easy that anyone can do it—even humble nonprofit professional like yourself.
Nonprofits may not be classed as businesses in the same way, but they still need a website. These
will generally be quite simple, outlining what the nonprofit is about and showing visitors how they
can get involved, donate, or support in some other way. Nonprofit websites will often have a
function to collect email addresses, and to create a database of people interested in keeping in
touch with the organization through newsletters.
9. Personal
Page | 17
You might have heard the phrase ‘personal brand’ bandied around, and having a website can form
a huge part of this.
Share pictures, share thoughts, or treat your site like a digital CV. The choice is yours!
You don’t need to be a creative (see ‘Portfolio’ below) or a blogger (see ‘Blog’ above) to benefit
from having your own website – and you don’t even need to spend any money making one.
10. Portal
Page | 18
Portal websites, like Yahoo, bring together information from lots of different sites and present
them in one place.
Web portals can be internal websites for organizations like schools, or for big businesses. It’s a
centralized place to share news, training and updates, and for students or employees to access their
emails and files. Users will need their own specific login to access these portals.
11. Portfolio
Page | 19
If you’re a writer, artist or designer, you’ll want to go one step further than a personal website –
this is where a portfolio website can help.
These are a way for creative to showcase their work to future employees, market themselves as
freelancers, and generally get their name (and work) out into the big wide world.

ADVANTAGES OF WEBSITE
Page | 24
• Less Expensive: - Have you ever advertised your business through various forms such as
printed media, radio, and television or by other means? It’s expensive! Investing in
advertising is necessary, but it takes a lot of money. Having a website will make promoting
your company less expensive. Many versions of offline advertising available on the internet
are sometimes free.
• Satisfaction:-Having a website will be more convenient for your customers and leads.
Make it easy for your customers to purchase from you! Many will be more likely to visit
your website, rather than driving a car to your physical location and browsing for your
products. From a customer’s point of view, it’s better for them if they don’t have to ask
anything. They can just find what they’re looking for on your online site.
• Increase Customers:-Most businesses have local popularity, but what about potential
customers outside their city? A website can help you generate more customers. Not just
outside your city, but worldwide. The internet offers a global community. With a
website, your business will be visible around the world.
• Accessibility:-Have you ever experienced having to turn customers away because it’s
closing time? Well, you don’t have to close the doors of your website. An online site can
be visited any time of the day or night. People will look to your site instead of going to
your shop because it is more accessible. Just make sure to post enough information about
your products and services.
Page | 25
• Access to Info:-If you own a website, you can actually track everything that is happening
on it? You can even look for information that will tell you how many people visited your
site, or how many people messaged or emailed you. You can access the progress of your
website and view all its pages. You can even make an update anytime, making it much less
expensive than printed material.
• Increase Sales:-If you are a business owner, more visitors leads to more potential sales.
That’s how your website will help you. You can drive more people to your site by
consistently updating and promoting the contents of your site. The more informative your
site is, the greater the possibility of increasing your sales.
• Long Term Clients:-What do you think is the difference between client and a customer?
Well, a customer is the one who walks in and buys something and that’s it. A client is your
regular customer. He is buying your products
Or services daily or contractually. Having a website gives you a chance to gain more clients
that can help your business grow.
DISADVANTAGES OF WEBSITE
Page | 26
• Reliability:-The information on your website might be unreliable if not updated on
a regular basis. You need to ensure that changes are made when necessary and have
a disclaimer with regards to the reliability of the information contained within.
A website that crashes is no good to anyone. This is a serious disadvantage for a business. If your
website is constantly crashing or unavailable then people will not be able to find information about
your business and you could miss out on potential sales. An unreliable connection could also mean
a plummet in a websites search engine ranking. This is the reason why You Need Good
Webhosting for Your Business.
Page | 27
• Difficultly Reaching The Right People:-Because of the nature of the internet and the sheer
number of businesses already on the World Wide Web, you may find it difficult to reach
the right target audience with your website. Competition within your market may be strong
and the battle for the illusive No.1 spot on Google maybe a difficult one, against a wealth
of other businesses in your sector. This is not always the case and there are ways around it
such as using our Competitor Insight service to learn your competitions internet strategy
and targeting “long-tail” keyword. While our managed social media solutions can help
improve your ranking and put your business on the right footing
• SPAM:-We all hate spam. The internet equivalent of junk mail. This is one of the
disadvantages of a website which can cause you some grief. With a contact form or your
e-mail address published on your website, you’ll soon find your inbox filling up with spam
e-mails unless you use Form Guard or a captcha tool.
Page | 28
SOFTWARE SYSTEM
There are a wide range of software system, such as CGI, Java servlets and Java server pages
(JSP), PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby programming languages, Active server pages and cold Fusion
(CFML) that are available to generate dynamic web system and dynamic sites. Site may also
include content that is retrived from one or more databases or by using XML-based technologies
such as RDD.
Static content may also be dynamically generated either periodically, or if certain condition
for regeneration occur (cached) in order to avoid the performance loss of initiating the dynamic
engine on a per-user or per-connection basis.
Plugins are available to expand the features and abilities of web browsers to show active
content or even create internet applications. Examples of such plugins are Microsoft Silverlight,
Adobe Flash, Adobe shockwave or applets written in java. Dynamic HTML also provide for user
interactively and real-time element updating within web pages (i.e., pages don’t have to be loaded
or reloaded to effect any changes), mainly using the document object model(DOM) and JavaScript,
Support which is built into most modern web browsers.
Turning a website into an income source is a common practice for web developers and
website owners. There are several methods for creating a website business which fall into two
brand broad categories, as defend below.
Page | 29
PRODUCT OR SERVICE-BASED SITES
Some website derive revenue by offering products or services for sale. In the case of e-
commerce website, the products or services may be purchased at the website itself, by entering
credit card or other payment information into a payment from on the site. While most business
website server as a shop window for existing brick and mortar business, it is increasingly the case
that some website are business in their own right: that is, the products they offer are only available
for purchase on the web.
Website occasionally derive income from a combination of these two practices. For
example, a website such as online auctions website may charges the users of its auctions service
to list auction, but also display third-party advertisement on the site, from which it derives further
income.
• Choosing a Domain and Host: - A domain name needs to accurately reflect your brand's
voice and be nearly impossible to misspell. Finding the right name for your brand is crucial,
because incorporating a combination of SEO, simple spelling, and brand identity into the
domain name leads to a higher chance of being located in search engine results. Simply
put, businesses that are easily accessed online get more customers.
• Clean Design: - One of the most important things to remember during the process of
website development is to create a clean, appealing design. A quality design is attractive
and easy to read with intuitive navigation. Most importantly, a clean design helps viewers
focus on the value of your brand and content instead of distracting graphics and large
amounts of text. Often, customers associate website designs with the quality of a particular
company or product. Hence, a clean design is vital to providing a positive user experience
that encourages customers to return.
• Branding: - Branding is important to all businesses, both large and small. The design and
placement of your brand's logo contributes to a viewer's overall opinion. Professionally
Page | 30
designed logos successfully catch the customer's eye and provide a clear picture of the
brand's unique voice. Choose a location on your site that is readily visible to visitors, such
as the upper left corner, since this is where the eye naturally begins to scan a website. To
further solidify your brand's identity, consider using the same logo on packaging, print
advertising, and branded apparel. When a business is consistent with branding, it provides
customers with an integrated and memorable brand experience.
• Mobile Sites vs. Responsive Sites: - Statistics indicate that the use of mobile devices to
conduct online searches has increased significantly in the past two years. In fact,
approximately 95% of mobile device users count on their devices to search for local
products and services. To effectively reach this growing population of mobile users,
businesses need to be sure that their websites are available from any device. For a large
company with an existing web presence, it makes sense to develop a separate, mobile-
friendly website designed to perform well on any device. On the other hand, a business
planning the launch of a website would be better served by choosing a responsive
design capable of adapting to any device.
• Captcha Tests: - Spam, spam, and more spam. That's what some businesses receive in their
comment sections, contact forms, and site forums that don't have captcha tests in place.
These tests (you'll recognize them as the random letters and numbers typed before
submitting a web-based form) differentiate humans from robots. Adding these short tests
Page | 31
to your contact forms will ensure that only humans are able to use your site's resources -
saving your business time and money.
• Offsite Reviews:-Due to Google's search algorithm changes, greater priority has been
placed on local searches. Review services, such as Google and Yelp, can be instrumental
in generating qualified leads for businesses. Now, when customers search for a local
business or product, they're often greeted with reviews about a company on the first page
of search engine results. Obtaining reviews on third party websites adds to your brand's
credibility, while making it simple for viewers to gain insight into customer satisfaction
associated with your brand. To guarantee customers are able to leave reviews about your
company, make sure to claim your business profile on third party review sites like Google
and Yelp. You can than create a call to action on your website that will prompt a client to
write a review and lead them to that particular third party review service. Google offers a
great way to connect your Google+ business page reviews with your website. As long as
you have an address for your business that qualifies and a Google+ account, you can search
for your business page and if one doesn't exist already you can create one. Once Google
verifies that you're the owner you will see your Google+ business page linked to your
website whenever it appears in the SERP's.
Page | 32
• Original Content: - When designing a website, it is crucial to write high quality, original
content that is relevant to your company and products. Everything from the quality of your
content to the keywords used affects your site's ranking in search engine results. Keyword
research can provide topic ideas and, if used sparingly, will help customers quickly locate
the content they're seeking. To increase the appeal, each web page should have no less than
150 words and should include links to credible resources and other pages on your website.
More than providing information, the content published on your site should be written to
echo your brand's unique voice. Before publishing, use a tool like Copyscape to ensure that
it passes duplication standards. Posting duplicate content on your website will result in
steep penalties from Google, including possible removal from search engine results.
• Stock Images: - Everything found on your website is considered intellectual property and
falls under copyright laws. As one of the world's leading suppliers of stock photos, Getty
Images regulates the appropriate use of images online. If not posted with permission,
images that are copyrighted may result in fines. When incorporating images into your site's
content, make sure to receive written permission for use and pay relevant fees, if applicable.
There are also sites that offer access to copyright-free images. However, be sure to carefully
review terms of use before posting them. For many businesses, the costs associated with
the lawful use of images outweigh the immediate benefit of "getting something for
nothing."
Given these 24 aspects of website development and design, it's clear that there are many
factors to consider when creating a branded website. In addition to increasing traffic and
generating leads, your site's design, navigation, and content must engage customers and
inspire further interaction with your brand. As you build a website, review the tools and
information outlined in this guide to ensure that your site has the tools required to succeed.

How to Improve Website’s
Website is really for: to convert traffic into lead-form submissions, phone calls, physical-location
visits, contact-form submissions and sales. Without these actions, your business will not generate
revenue. Naturally, the more conversions your website produces, the more revenue your business
is going to produce.
Approximately 31 percent of all traffic to the top 10 digital properties came from mobile
devices, according to Com Score’s 2015 US Digital Future in Focus study. This number,
while already significant, will keep increasing. If your website doesn’t provide a pleasant
mobile experience you are shooting yourself in the foot.
Page | 36
3. Keep your navigation simple.
When consumers land on your website they need to be able to find what they are looking for within
two seconds. If they have to search any longer than that they are going to become frustrated and
find another website.
Keep your navigation menu as simple as possible. Too many options will overwhelm your visitors.
You need to have a clear path to whatever action it is you want your visitors to complete, whether
it’s a submission form or a specific destination page.
While a phone number is always a great idea, many consumers would rather contact a business
through its website, especially if they are inquiring about a service. They don’t want to be pitched
and sold to -- they just want information. Make it as easy as possible for potential customers to
contact you.
When social media was new and fresh, everyone put their social feeds on their websites. Now,
consumers know how to connect with your brand on social media if they want to. Placing Facebook
and Twitter feeds on your website just draws attention away from your conversion goals.
