Marxist approach on Les Miserables

Les miserables is a classic French novel that is emphasizing the social classes. This novel
was written during the romantic era. This novel talks about extreme poverty in contrast
with wealth. The scene where the people were gathering at a plaza and protesting, it
portrays the line between wealthy and powerful people and the lower-class/poor people. It
also talks about extreme power and extreme helplessness. In the story, Javert was always
punishes the helpless poor people. All in all, this novel is written with the purpose of
emphasizing unequal society in our world. In the novel, class struggles were seen all over
the movie, both in small and large stages- in the back alleys, underground canal to the
barricades. In the scene where Fantine was harassed by a wealthy man, Javert automatically
takes the side of the wealthier, higher class man. Javert chose to take the side of the man
because Fantine is a prostitute and is in a lower class on the society. Her words have no
value no matter what truth she says to defend herself. Fantine was affected by the class
system.
