7 Calculation of Concentration of Solution1

The document provides dosage calculation practice questions related to determining the concentration of various drugs in supplied solutions and calculating infusion rates. It includes examples of calculating concentration by setting up a ratio of the amount of drug to the volume of solution. It also demonstrates using concentration and ordered infusion rates to determine the rate of infusion in mL/hr. The answer key provides the step-by-step work and solutions to the practice questions.

CALCULATION OF CONCENTRATION OF A SOLUTION

Using “ratio and proportion” can help to simplify calculation of the concentration of a solution:

Amount of drug (e.g. mg, units) = X_

Volume of solution (mL) 1 mL

When answering the following questions, be sure to:

• round off to 2 decimal points for mL and mg (where appropriate)
• state the unit of measurement in each answer

1. The physician’s order reads:

Aminophylline 60 mg/ h IV
The drug is supplied in a syringe containing 500 mg of Aminophylline in 50 mL of
solution.

a. What is the concentration (mg/ per mL) of Aminophylline in the syringe?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

c. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication if the physician’s order
was for 100 mg/ h?
2. The physician’s order reads:
Heparin at 750 units/ h IV
The drug is supplied in a syringe containing 10,000 units of Heparin in 40 mL of
solution.

a. What is the concentration (units/ per mL) of Drug in the syringe?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

c. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication if the physician’s order
was for 1400 units/ h?

3. The physician’s order reads:

Regular Insulin at 2 units/ h IV
The drug is supplied in a bag containing 22 units of Regular Insulin 100 mL of solution.

a. What is the concentration (units/ per mL) of insulin in the bag?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

c. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication if the physician’s order
was for 5 units/ h?

4. The physician’s order reads:

Dopamine at 75 mg/ h IV
The drug is supplied in a syringe containing 500 mg of Dopamine in 50 mL of solution.

a. What is the concentration (mg/ per mL) of Dopamine in the syringe?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

c. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication if the physician’s order
was for 60 mg/ h?
5. The physician’s order reads:
Morphine at 0.3 mg/ h IV
The drug is supplied in a syringe containing 20 mg of Morphine in 50 mL of solution.

a. What is the concentration (mg/ per mL) of Morphine in the syringe?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

c. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication if the physician’s order
was for 0.5 mg/ h?

6. The physician’s order reads:

Flagyl 500 mg IV over one hour
Flagyl is supplied in a bag containing 500 mg of Flagyl in 100 mL of solution.

a. What is the concentration (mg/ per mL) of Flagyl in the bag?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

7. The physician’s order reads:

Crystapen 750,000 units IV over 3 hours
Crystapen is supplied in a bag containing 750,000 units of Crystapen in 250 mL of
solution.

a. What is the concentration (units/ per mL) of Crystapen in the bag?

b. At what rate (mL/ h) would you deliver the medication?

CALCULATION OF CONCENTRATION OF A SOLUTION ANSWER KEY

1a. 500 mg = X__ X = 10 mg/ mL

50 mL 1 mL

1b. 60 mg X 1 mL = 6 mL/ h
10 mg

1c. 100 mg X 1 mL = 10 mL/ h

10 mg

2a. 10,000 units = X__ X = 250 units/ mL

40 mL 1 mL

2b. 750 units X 1 mL = 3 mL/ h

250 units

2c. 1400 units X 1 mL = 5.6 mL/ h

250 units

3a. 22 units = X_ X = 0.22 units/ mL

100 mL 1 mL

3b. 2 units X 1 mL = 9.09 mL/ h

0.22 units

3c. 5 units X 1 mL = 22.7 mL/ h

0.22 units

4a. 500 mg = X_ X = 10 mg/ mL

50 mL 1 mL

4b. 75 mg X 1 mL = 7.5 mL/ h

10 mg

4c. 60 mg X 1 mL = 6 mL/ h
10 mg

5a. 20 mg = X_ X = 0.4 mg/ mL

50 mL 1 mL

5b. 0.3 mg X 1 mL = 0.75 mL/ h

0.4 mg

5c. 0.5 mg X 1 mL = 1.25 mL/ h

0.4 mg
6a. 500 mg = X_ X = 5 mg/ mL
100 mL 1 mL

6b. 500 mg X 1 mL = 100 mL/ h

5 mg

7a. 750,000 units = X_ X = 3000 units/ mL

7b. Calculate the # of units to be

given per hour:

750,000 units = X_
3h 1h

X = 250,000 units

Then calculate the rate:

250,000 units X 1 mL =
3000 units 83.3 mL/ h
