Habit 2

The document discusses Habit #2 - Begin With The End In Mind. It emphasizes creating a personal mission statement and thinking about what you want your life to stand for. This includes envisioning what you want people to say about you at your funeral and focusing on your core values and principles rather than being centered around things like relationships, money or pleasure that are unreliable. Developing a principle-centered mission provides security, wisdom, power and fulfillment to guide your decisions and actions.

HABIT #2

Begin With The

End In Mind
To learn the
importance of
creating things twice
To learn the
difference between
leadership and
management.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a
personal mission
statement.

To develop thinking
with the end in mind.

To live a meaningful
life.

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU
ARE PLANNING TO FAIL.
- BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Before we begin
ACTIVITY
In your mind’s eye, see yourself going to the
funeral of a loved one. Picture yourself driving to
the funeral parlor or chapel, parking the car, and
getting out. As you walk inside the building, you
notice the flowers, the soft organ music. You see
the faces of friends and family you pass along
the way. You feel the shared sorrow of losing, the
joy of having known, that radiates from the
hearts of the people there.
ZIMCORE HUBS | DESIGN THINKING
As you walk down to the front of the room and
look inside the casket, you suddenly come face
to face with yourself. This is your funeral, three
years from today. All these people have come to
honor you, to express feelings of love and
appreciation for your life.
As you take a seat and wait for the
services to begin, you look at the program in
your hand. There are to be four speakers. The
first is from your family, the second is one of
your friends, the third is from your
work/profession or school, and the fourth is
from your church or some community
organization.
Now think deeply. What would you like each of these speakers to say
about you and your life? What kind of son or daughter or cousin?
What kind of friend? What character would you like them to have
seen in you? What contributions or achievements would you want
them to remember? Look carefully at the people around you. What
difference would you like to have made in their lives?
“BEGIN WITH THE END IN
MIND”
-You have to begin today with the image, picture, or paradigm
of the end of your life as your frame of reference or the
criterion by which everything else is examined.
-We have to develop a clear understanding of our destination.
-It is easy to get caught up in an activity trap, to be busy
without being effective.
-We have to avoid empty victories and know what really matter
to us.
-When we begin with the end in mind, we become efficient and
effective.

“A Personal Mission Statement”
-WE HAVE TO DEVELOP A PHILOSOPHY OR CREED WHICH
FOCUSES ON WHAT WE WANT TO BE (CHARACTER) AND TO
DO (CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS) AND ON THE
VALUES OR PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH BEING AND DOING ARE
BASED.
-PEOPLE CAN’T LIVE WITH CHANGE IF THERE’S NOT A
CHANGELESS CORE INSIDE THEM. THE KEY TO THE ABILITY TO
CHANGE IS A CHANGELESS SENSE OF WHO YOU ARE, WHAT
YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU VALUE.
