Trends in Distributed Object Computing PDF

This document discusses trends in distributed object computing. It begins with an overview of distributed object computing and its history from ARPANET in the 1970s to present-day technologies like cloud computing, grid computing, mobile/ubiquitous computing, and pervasive technologies that allow interconnection of devices anywhere. Examples are given of how distributed systems are used in various domains like financial organizations, online games, and weather forecasting by providing on-demand access and sharing of computational resources.

Outline:
 What is Distributed Object Computing.
History of distributed object computing.
Pervasive technology
Mobile & ubiquitous computing
Cloud computing
Grid computing
What is Distributed Object Computing
A distributed system consists of several computers that
communicate over a network to coordinate the actions and
processes of a common application.
Organizing a distributed application as a set of objects is a
powerful architectural paradigm, which is supported by a
number of infrastructures and tools. The development of
middleware has in fact started with the advent of distributed
object systems.
History of distributed object computing
1970s
ARPANET email
Pioneer large scale distributed application
Most success apps fro ARPANET
Local-area Network - Ethernet
DCS (Distributed Computing System)
Create system that interconnect minicomputers
Provide resource sharing, fault tolerant
History of distributed object computing
1990s - Present
Distribute.net - 1997
1st project that use internet to distribute data
User download program instead of email
Advanced in technology
Grid architecture
Web-Services
Cloud computing
Google optimize search algorithm through DC
Trends in Distributed Object
computing
Pervasive technology
Pervasive technology
Modern Internet – Collection of internetworked devices-
wired & wireless
Pervasive resources and devices can be connected at any
time and in any place
Mobile & ubiquitous computing

Small and portable devices are possible to be used within distributed

systems
E.g. laptop computers, handheld devices, wearable devices, devices
embedded in appliances –
Mobile computing:
portability of the devices and the ability to connect to networks in
different places
Ubiquitous computing:
small computing devices that available everywhere and are easily
attached to networks

Cloud computing

cloud computing used Internet as a medium , with TCP based

resource sharing may be. Components in cloud may look like one
single box but resources in reality are shared based on a software , that
is trying to make it look virtual. Its an automated version of distributed
system to be precise.
Cloud computing is a type of internet-based computing that provides
shared computer processing resources and data to computers and other
devices on demand.
It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared
pool of configurable computing resources with minimal service
provider interaction
Grid Computing

Allow variety of geographically distributed resources to be shared and

aggregate
Grid Broker:-
Negotiate for access costs
Schedule, deploy tasks and collect final results
Benefits:-
Transparent
On-demand access
Improved productivity
Extra resources to solve problem
Example:
Financial Organization - Collaboration for computational power
Online Multiplayer Game - Dedicated game server in various country
Weather Forecasting - Require high data and computational power
