DeltaV Excel

This document provides instructions for using Excel with DeltaV to view process data from the DeltaV historian. It describes how to configure different functions in Excel's DeltaV add-in to display single data points, raw data over a time range, or interpolated data over a time range. It also notes that any Excel files with DeltaV function tables need to have the values copied rather than references in order to view the data on a computer without DeltaV installed.

Using Excel with DeltaV

 Click on the “Excel” button on the DeltaV Operate screen. This will open Excel.
 In Excel:
1. Select a cell for the upper left corner for a table with DeltaV data.
2. Go to the Add-Ins tab in the main Excel Menu.
3. In the Add-Ins tab, go to DeltaV → Continuous Historian. This will bring up several
options for creating new or editing existing tables, as described below.

Options of the Continuous Historian Menu

 Configure Single Function

This function shows a value of a selected control variable at a specified moment of time.
1. Connection = PROPLUS (this is the name of the main DeltaV server).
2. Select a tag (i.e. control variable):
a. Press the “…” button. This will bring up a search menu.
b. Keep the default search pattern ("*") and click "Search". This will bring up a list of
all available tags.
c. Choose an appropriate tag, e.g.
DeltaV=PROPLUS LI-114/AI1/PV.CV or
DeltaV=PROPLUS FIC-303/PID1/OUT.CV
These examples correspond, respectively, to a reading of the level sensor with tag
LI-114 and a signal from a PID controller to the valve with tag FIC-303.
3. Choose time (timestamp) for which the data should be shown.
By default, timestamp = current time.
4. Select Return Data to be shown. Since the Historian system stores values at certain time
intervals, the value corresponding to the specified timestamp may not be available.
Selection of Return Data specifies which value should be shown in this case:
 "Previous sample" = last value stored before the requested timestamp
 "Next sample" = first value stored after the requested timestamp
 "Interpolated value" = value at the specified timestamp is interpolated between the
Previous and Next samples.
5. In the “Display Data” area of the menu:

1
 Check "Header Row". This will automatically produce a header row for the data
table.
 Select columns by highlighting them in the “Available Column” list and pressing a
right arrow (→ Selected Columns)
 Typical selected columns: Timestamp and Value
6. In the “Worksheet” area of the menu, check the “Adjust selection to accommodate results
(if necessary)” option.
7. Press “Try It” button to see a preview.
8. If you are satisfied with the preview, click “OK”. This will produce a table in Excel.
Note: By default, the Timestamp column contains date and time values in a rather cryptic
format. To convert them to something more readable, select cells with the timestamps
information. Then go to the “Format Cells” menu of Excel, and select “Date” or “Time”
(whichever is more useful, most likely the latter). Alternatively, you can display both date and
time by selecting “Custom” format and then choosing a format that contains both date and time
information.
 Configure Raw Data Function
This function shows values of a selected control variable for a specified time range.
Most of configuration steps are similar to those for the Single Function. The only difference is
that, instead of a single timestamp, you select a range. There are boxes in the menu "From
Boundary" and "To Boundary" for this time interval selection.
Note:
1. It is important to click "Try It" before clicking OK after configuring the function.
Otherwise, you will only get a single data point in the spreadsheet
2. Time step between recorded values may not be uniform. This is because DetlaV Historian
stores a new value only if it is sufficiently different from the latest stored value.
 Configure Interpolated Data Function
This function shows values of a selected control variable for a specified time range. Unlike the
Raw Data function, this function reports values at a regular time interval. Values missing in
the Historian record are interpolated using the stored values.
 Edit Function
This option of the Continuous Historian menu allows you to make changes in a configured
function. For example, you can use it to change the time interval for reported data.

Storing Data for Future Analysis

Tables produced by the Continuous Historian Add-In use built-in DeltaV functions, which
are only available on computers with DeltaV installed. Therefore, if you directly copy a
file with these tables to your personal computer, it will not be able to access the necessary
functions and you will not be able to see any data.
Therefore, you need to copy the values, not references to functions. To do this select the
entire worksheet (Ctrl+A), Copy (Ctrl+C), go to a blank worksheet, select a cell, right
click → Paste special → Paste Values → Values and source formatting.
