Tutorial

This tutorial document provides examples of constrained optimization problems: 1. A refrigeration manufacturing firm must minimize total costs to produce 50 refrigerators per month for 3 months given production and carrying costs. 2. Design the largest volume box that can be made from a metallic sphere of given radius. 3. Design a right circular cylinder can with specified interior volume and ratio constraints to minimize sheet metal area. 4. Purchase optimal amounts of two products containing different ratios of three chemicals to minimize costs while meeting quantity requirements.

Tutorial - I

1. A manufacturing firm producing small refrigerators has entered into a contract to supply
50 refrigerators at the end of the first month, 50 at the end of the second month, and 50 at
the end of third. The cost of producing x refrigerators in any month is given by $ (x2 +
1000). The firm can produce more refrigerators in any month can carry them to a
subsequent month. However, it costs $20 per unit for any refrigerator carried over from one
month to the next. Assuming that there is no initial inventory, formulate the problem to
determine the number of refrigerators to be produced in each month to minimize the total
cost.
2. Express as a constrained optimization problem the case of manufacturing a box of largest
volume from a metallic sphere of radius r.
3. Design a can closed at one end using the smallest area of sheet metal for a specified interior
volume of 600 cm3. The can is a right-circular cylinder with interior height h and radius r.
The ratio of height to diameter must not be less than 1.0 nor greater than 1.5. The height
cannot be more than 20 cm. Formulate the design optimization problem.
4. A person requires 10, 12 and 12 units of chemicals A, B and C respectively for his gardens.
A liquid product contains 5, 2 and 1 unit of A, B and C respectively per jar. A dry product
contains 1, 2 and 4 units of A, B and C per carton. If liquid product sells for Rs 3 per jar
and the dry product sells for Rs 2 per carton, how many of each should be purchased to
minimize the costs and meet the requirement? Formulate the above problems as an LPP.
