D. Mathematical Concept
Variance and Standard deviation on the other hand are called They are called
measures of dispersion. They tell us how close or how far apart the values of the
random variable are to each other
To determine the standard deviation, simply determine the square root of the
variance.

C. Motivation
Directions: The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will solve the following
problems. The answers to each problem corresponds to a single syllable of our topic for today.
Write all of the syllables so that you may be able to decode our topic for today.

D. Activity
Number Relay
Directions: The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will race to finish
performing each step of how to determine the variance and standard deviation of a discrete
probability distribution. First one to complete the task is the winner for each round. The winner for
each round will choose a representative to explain how they were able to do the task.
Round 2: Complete the (X – µ)2 column by squaring all values obtained in Step 1.
Round 4: Determine the variance by adding all the values in the (X – µ)2 ● P(X) column.
Round 5: Determine the standard deviation by getting the square root of the variance.
E. Analysis
3. What are the steps in determining the variance and the standard deviation of a
discrete probability distribution?
F. Abstraction
1. What is the formula to determine the variance and the standard deviation of a
discrete probability distribution?
G. Application
1. The number of items sold per day at a retail store, with its corresponding
probabilities, is shown in the table. Find the variance and standard deviation.
