Once upon a time, there lived a very wise king who ruled a kingdom in Cipanas, West Java. The
king and queen had a beautiful daughter who they loved very much. However, the princess never
felt happy. Her parents’ gifts of jewelry didn’t make the princess happy. Do you know her
problem? She was never satisfied with her looks. Why? Well she wanted to be the most beautiful
girl in the world!
Then, the princess had an idea. She planned to place all the jewelry on every single hair on
her head. So the princess met the king and queen and told them about her plan.
The king was surprised to hear about his daugther’s plan. He tried to convince her that her
plan was improper.”My dearest daughter, the beauty of a princess is not measured by her clothes
or jewelry she is wearing, but by her attitude. It’s not that we don’t love you, but what will our
people think if you go through with your plan?” asked the king.
Feeling certain that her parents would grant her wish, the princess was shocked to hear the
king’s response. Immediately, she ran to her room to get her jewelry box and returned to her
parents soon after.
Before the king and queen, she screamed, “You are so miserly! Here, I am returning every
single piece of your jewelry you ever gave me.” She threw the jewelry box at the king.
The wise king was outraged seeing what his daughter did. He said, “What an ungrateful
daughter!”
Suddenly, the floor of the palace cracked and water poured out from the cracks. In a second
the palace was flooded, drowning the ungrateful princess and her jewelry. Guess what! The
palace turned into a lake!
Well, the lake always reflects multiple colors in its surrounding. A number of people say the
colours come from the princess’ jewelry. That’s why, the lake is known as Telaga Warna which
means a colorful lake
