2.2 Types of insulating compounds

Replace the existing text of subclause 2.2 by the following new text:

3.1 General description

Replace the text of subclause 3.1 by the following new text:

Single and multi-core cables for fixed installations, 0,6/1 kV and 1,8/3 kV, shall be constituted
as follows:

– copper conductors;
– insulation of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR), halogen-free ethylene propylene rubber
(HF EPR), hard grade ethylene propylene rubber (HEPR), halogen-free hard grade ethylene
propylene rubber (HF HEPR), cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), halogen-free cross-linked
1)
polyethylene (HF XLPE), or, only for 0,6/1 kV cables, halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin
material (HF 85), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or silicone rubber (S 95) or halogen-free silicone
rubber (HF S 95);
NOTE 1 See 3.3.1 for special provisions in respect of fire-resistant (limited circuit integrity) cables.
– inner covering: mandatory when a metallic screen is applied over the core laying-up;
NOTE 2 An inner sheath may also be admitted as a bedding for the overall metallic screen.
– metallic screen: optional for 0,6/1 kV cables and mandatory for 1,8/3 kV cables.

For the outer protection of cores, the following types of construction are permitted:

a) a single sheath of polychloroprene, or chlorosulphonated polyethylene or chlorinated

polyethylene, or polyvinyl chloride, or halogen-free polyolefin 1) ;
b) an inner sheath of polychloroprene, or chlorosulphonated polyethylene or chlorinated
polyethylene, and an outer sheath of polyvinyl chloride;
c) a copper braid over an inner covering with an outer single sheath of polychloroprene, or
chlorosulphonated polyethylene or chlorinated polyethylene, or polyvinyl chloride or
halogen-free polyolefin 1) (see table I of amendment 1 to IEC 60092-359);
d) a single sheath of polychloroprene, or chlorosulphonated polyethylene or chlorinated
1)
polyethylene, or polyvinyl chloride or halogen-free polyolefin with an outer metal braid;

___________
1) The term “polyolefin” has been used as a generic term for halogen-free materials such as SHF1 and SHF2
although this term has not been introduced in IEC 60092-359.
60092-353 Amend. 1  IEC:2001 –7–

e) an inner sheath of polychloroprene, or chlorosulphonated polyethylene or chlorinated

polyethylene, or polyvinyl chloride, or halogen-free polyolefin 1) , a metal armour and an
outer sheath of polychloroprene, or chlorosulfonated polyethylene, or chlorinated poly-
ethylene or polyvinyl chloride or halogen-free polyolefin 1) .
NOTE 3 The use of a thermoplastic innersheath (PVC or SHF1) is not recommended if the outer sheath consists
of a elastomeric vulcanised material.
NOTE 4 Cables for installations in spaces where corrosion may occur, for example weather decks, wet locations,
battery compartments, refrigeration rooms, etc., should have an outer sheath over the braid, if any, unless the braid
itself is corrosion-resistant.

3.2 Conductors

Replace the second paragraph of subclause 3.2 by the following new paragraph:

For cables with XLPE, HF XLPE, EPR, HF EPR, HEPR, HF HEPR or HF 85 insulation, where
non-coated copper conductors with or without separator are used, a compatibility test
according to 4.1.1 shall be carried out on a complete core.

3.3.1 Material

Replace the text of subclause 3.3.1 with the following new text:

The insulation system shall consist of either one of the insulating compounds indicated in 2.2,
or, in the case of fire-resistant (limited circuit integrity) cables,

– a combination of one or more helically applied layers of inorganic tape(s);

– or a combination of helically applied layers of inorganic tapes and longitudinally applied
layers of organic tapes;
– and a layer of one of the insulating compounds indicated in 2.2.

3.3.2 Electrical and non-electrical characteristics of insulation

Replace the title and the text of subclause 3.3.2 by the following:

3.3.2 Electrical and non-electrical characteristics of the insulation system

These shall be as specified in IEC 60092-351 for the relevant type of insulating compound
used.

3.3.3 Thickness of insulation

Delete the existing item d) and insert the new items d) and e) as follows:

d) The thickness of any separator or tapes applied on the conductor or over the insulation
shall not be included in the thickness of insulation.
e) The thickness of the tapes applied shall be adequate to meet the performance
requirements of this standard, and an increase of a fictitious value of 0,2 mm for each tape
applied shall be included in the calculation of the fictitious dimensions (see annexes A and
B of IEC 60092-350).
NOTE The insulation thickness are specified in table 1 or in annex A.
___________
1) The term “polyolefin” has been used as a generic term for halogen-free materials such as SHF1 and SHF2
although this term has not been introduced in IEC 60092-359.
