Exercise 1.1 PDF

This document contains responses to questions about patterns, numbers, and mathematics found in nature. It discusses patterns in traffic roads, shell spirals, giraffe spots, and ocean waves. Numbers are also described as important in describing ideas, measuring things, and various daily activities like using public transportation, making purchases, and viewing social media metrics. Real world examples of mathematical patterns are provided.

Exercise 1.1

Use five sentences or less to answer each of the following questions completely.

1. To address the problem of traffic in a big city, several straight roads are being constructed. It was
noted that two roads will have at most one junction, three roads will have at most three junctions, and
so on.

a. Complete the table below. Identify the pattern on the maximum number of junctions for each given
number of straight roads.

6 9 15

b. At most how many junctions are expected to be constructed if there will be seven roads in the city?

- When there is 7 (seven) roads in the city there will be 21 (twenty-one) possible junctions to be
constructed.

2. Why are numbers important in your life?

- Numbers are beneficial, precise and comprehensive to describe a certain idea, point of view
and different areas. In fact, it is proportion in our lives since it involves mathematical interpretation that
can measure, recognize and even create things. To conclude that, without numbers our lives will be
insufficient.

3. Other than those mentioned in the text, enumerate five (5) situations where you have to use
numbers.

a. My uncle gives me allowance every month from Canada, the bank will convert the money
from Canadian Dollar to Philippine Peso.

b. Everyday, I call my parents in province using my mobile phone. (phone numbers and the time
we talked)

c. Using elevator before and after going to school. (Floor numbers and time, I spent in elevator)

d. Calculating our daily budget for your food, allowance, and other expenses.

e. Viewing the number of a views in my stories in Instagram.

4. Other than those mentioned in the section, describe three other patterns of shapes that you see in
nature. Discuss briefly the “mathematics” behind such patterns.

a. Fractals is like a foam consist of different small bubbles and the schematic layers of bubbles
would likely to view as a combination pattern of a small pentagonal shape. This group of pentagonal
shape are most likely identified as part of mathematics.

b. Spiral pattern is like in a mollusks shells and we can measure how this shell expanding
geometrically. There are arcs, radius and with definite measurement of the mollusks shell which is also
seen in mathematical concepts specifically geometry.

c. Voronoi pattern is like the skin of giraffe which emerge from randomness as varying
concentrations of color-activating and color-inhibiting that will likely formed as a spot in their fur. The
amount of activator and inhibitor depends on the result will be shown to the giraffe’s fur. We can say
the black/brown part will be the dependent variable(activator) and the rest will be the independent
variable(inhibitor).

5. Identify and describe at least one pattern that you observe in your locality or within your nearby
environment.

- Since I lived in a place that is surrounded by the sea I often see the surface of its waves which is
a repeatedly patterns of waves produced by the winds. The flow of the waves would likely exist only if
the winds are present that makes the formation repeated. It made me recognize and admire the
mathematical concepts behind that surface of the wave in just looking at the sea.
