Dragon Fruit Peels and Rose Petals as Dye Colorant for Clothes: A Comparative Study
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
In this study the researchers focused on Natural dyes but there are two types of dyes, Synthetic
dyes and Natural dyes. Natural dyes are obtained from materials produce by plants, animals, and
minerals. While synthetic dyes are made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. (New
Standard Encyclopedia, 1995).
Anthocyanins are the pigments responsible for red, purple, and blue colours. Dragon fruit peels
and rose petals both contained the pigment anthocyanins, this common variable of the two makes them a
possible source to make a natural dye for clothes.
Advantages:
• Minimal Environment Impact - because they are obtained from natural source so it is
not harmful to our environment.
• Natural dyes are also biodegradable and disposing them will not cause pollution.
Disadvantages:
• Availability – Dragon fruit and rose isn’t available all the time so availability is really a
disadvantage.
• Cost – Since dragon fruit is a bit pricey not all can be benefit by this study.
Hypotheses
Ha: There is a significant difference between dragon fruit and rose petals as dye colorant for
clothes.
Ha: There is a significant difference between the effect of water and the heat from the sun to the
clothes containing dyes from dragon fruit and rose petals as to its color intensity.
METHODOLOGY
A. Preparation of Dye
B. Application of Dye
C. Data Gathering
D. Survey
E. Statistical Tool Used
RESULTS
DISCUSSION
This study aimed to find which is much more effective as dye colorant between dragon fruit and
rose petals extracts.
In table 1, the color of the clothes soaked in two different extracts was observed in three trials
each in wet and dry condition. The clothes with dragon fruit dye has a different results between the wet
and dried condition. The wet dyed cloth signified a vibrant color than the dried dyed cloth whose color
was pale. While in the results of rose petals dyed in cloth has also different results between the two
conditions, the wet dyed cloth had extremely light pink and in the dried dyed cloth had yellowish color in
it. The color intensity level of the wet clothes with Dragon fruit peels dye was 3 while rose petals
intensity level was 0.23. Also, the color intensity level of dry clothes with Dragon fruit peels dye was 2
while rose petals Intensity level was 0.
In table 2, the results are based from the survey conducted. A total of thirty randomly selected
participants observed the color intensity of each clothes using figure 1 as a basis but some of the
respondents choses none of the levels as the color intensity.
In table 3, there are two statements; the first states that dragon fruit extract is much more
effective and the second states that rose petal extract was more effective than dragon fruit extract.
Randomly selected respondents chose from the corresponding 1-5 scales; 1 is strongly agree, 2 is agree, 3
is neutral, 4 is disagree and 5 is strongly disagree. In this table the weighted mean was identified by the
help of the results of the conducted survey. The results were analyzed with the use of the Likert Scale
agreement range. The average weighted mean of statement 1 is 1.63 while statement 2 got an average of
3.73.
CONCLUSION
Based on the results and data gathered, the researchers concluded that dragon fruit is more
effective than rose petals as an alternative dye colorant. With the help of the 30 respondents, the
researchers inferred that even the color change when the clothes are exposed to sunlight, the clothes with
Dragon Fruit dye still have a better color than the clothes with rose petals extract.
Based from the survey conducted by the researchers, the respondents agreed to the statement that
Dragon fruit extract was more effective than rose petal extract.
Statement 1: Dragon fruit extract was more effective than rose petal extract.
Statement 2: Rose petal extract was more effective than dragon fruit extract.
The average weighted mean of statement 1 is 1.63 which falls in the range of “agree” in the
Likert Scale of agreement. While statement 2 got an average of 3.73 which falls in the range of “disagree”
in the Likert Scale of agreement.
The researchers can clearly conclude that Dragon fruit extract was more effective than rose petal
extract.
RECOMMENDATION
Recommendations for change:
1. When extracting, the researchers recommend using other methods other than boiling such as
pounding with the use of mortar and pestle. The extracts that they will obtain from pounding will
be mixed with an exact amount of water the researchers want.
Recommendations for further study:
1. The researchers recommend to study if it is possible to make powdered dye from the following:
a. Dragon fruit
b. Dragon fruit peels
