Tutorial 3

This document discusses using Castigliano's theorem and the unit force method to determine slope, deflection, and reactions for various beam problems. It includes cantilever, simply supported, fixed, and curved beams with different end conditions and load types. Methods are presented for determining the slope of a cantilever beam, deflection of simply supported and fixed beams under a central load, rotation of a beam under a central couple, elongation of a conical bar, deflection of beams with various end loads, and reactions of continuous beams.

Tutorial 3

Slope and Deflection

1. Determine slope at free end of cantilever beam as shown in Figure 3.1, which is subjected
to load P. Use unit force method and Castigliano’s theorem. If P is zero and moment M
is acting at free end, what will be the slope at that end?

2. A simply supported bam of uniform cross section is loaded by a concentrated force at its
midpoint. Determine the deflection under the point of application of the force by using
Castigliano’s theorem and unit force method.
3. Determine the rotation of the midpoint of the beam shown in Figure 3.2 under the
action of the couple M applied at its centre.

4. A fixed beam of uniform cross section is loaded by a concentrated force at its midpoint.
Determine the deflection under the point of application of the force by using Castigliano’s
theorem and unit force method.
5. A simply supported beam of uniform cross section is loaded by a couple M1 at its right
support. Determine the equation of deflection curve by using Castigliano’s theorem and
unit force method.
6. A solid conical bar of circular cross section is suspended vertically. The length of bar is L,
and base circle diameter is D, and weight per unit volume is Y, Use Castigliano’s theorem
to determine elongation of the bar due to self-weight.
7. The lamp post in Figure 3.3 weighs 1.75 kN. Find the vertical deflection due to this
weight if I = 210 x 106 mm4 and E = 13.8 GPa. Use Castigliano’s theorem.
8. The cantilever beam as shown in Figure 3.4 has a rectangular cross section and is
subjected to equal loads P at free end and the centre. Determine the deflection of the
free end of the beam. What is the error in neglecting the strain energy due shear if the
beam L is five times the beam depth H? Assume beam is made of steel. Take E = 200 GPa,
shear force factor = 1.2 and G = 77.5 GPa.
9. The curve beam as shown in Figure 3.5 has a 30 mm square cross section and radius of
curvature R = 65 mm. The beam is made of steel for which E = 200 GPa and ν = 0.29, P
= 6 kN. Determine the component of deflection of the free end of the curve beam in the
direction of P.
