Universal Declaration

on Bioethics and Human Rights


What article/s or section/s of the instrument articulate the centrality of human rights vis-à-vis
science, technology, and development?

1. Article 4 – Benefit and harm

In applying and advancing scientific knowledge, medical practice and associated


technologies, direct and indirect benefits to patients, research participants and other affected
individuals should be maximized and any possible harm to such individuals should be
minimized.

2. Article 8 – Respect for human vulnerability and personal integrity

In applying and advancing scientific knowledge, medical practice and associated


technologies, human vulnerability should be taken into account. Individuals and groups of
special vulnerability should be protected, and the personal integrity of such individuals
respected.

3. Article 16 – Protecting future generations

The impact of life sciences on future generations, including on their genetic constitution,
should be given due regard.

These articles are regarded to science, technology and development because it does not
prevent its content from contributing in the general principles of bioethics. That eventhough it
can harm a human but in a very small chance, these articles chose not to violate the principles of
bioethics and focuses to the importance of awareness-raising, information, and consultation and
public debate.
