LABORATORY WORK NO.

PREPARATION OF SOIL SAMPLES FOR TEST

Introduction:

The preparation of the soil sample is important to be done first before performing various
laboratory experiments. The accuracy of the results of the proceedings experiments is dependent
upon the correct method of gathering samples. There shall be a disturbed and an undisturbed
sample.

Undisturbed Soil Sample represent the actual condition of the soil when it is in the ground.
This soil sample retains water content, as well as its physical appearance, and shall be protected
from strain and other loads while obtaining the sample. Disturbed soil sample are dried and break
into pieces before it will be stored in the container.

Objectives:

This laboratory procedure aims to provide samples of soil that can be used for
examination in the succeeding experiments.

Materials and Apparatus:

1. Shovel
2. Mixing Pan
3. Rubber Mallet (Pestle)
4. Set of Sieves
5. Weighing Scale
6. Oven with temperature control
7. Sample Container
8. Candle Wax (Petrowax)
9. Soil Sample

Procedure:

A. Preparation of the Undisturbed Sample

1. Locate a site to obtain the soil sample, recorded the condition of the environment.
2. Bore a soil sample from the ground a desired depth.
3. Place the sample on the container provided, make sure that crumbling of the soil is
presented by enclosing its sides in the container.
4. Cover the sample with the melted wax.
5. Label the container and keep for future use.
B. Preparation of the Disturbed Sample
1. Using a shovel, bore a soil sample at a desired depth.
2. Dry the sample into an oven with a temperature of 60 degrees.
3. Observe the crumbling of the Sample.
4. Using the rubber mallet, break the sample.
5. Using Sieve No.10 and a pan, let the sample pass through it and thoroughly mix those
soil passing particles.
6. Place the obtained sample in the container provided and cover it with the melted wax.
