hypothesis: there is no significant relationship between the nurse-patient ratio and nurse's work
satisfaction level within the patient care setting
CONCEPTUAL MODEL
as seen in the figure, the nurse is in an open circle which is then enclosed by an open rectangle.
two overlapping open circles are connected to the rectangle.
the nurse being enclosed in the open circle indicates the nurse as an open system who can be
influenced by both internal and external factors which could also then in turn affect each other.
Marilyn Ray describes nursing as contextual, which is influenced by the social structure of the
complex organization. Jean Watson also stated in her Theory of Transpersonal Caring that nurses
as human beings are open system who are influenced by both their internal and external
environments
two overlapping open circles are connected to the rectangle, indicating that these may also play a
role in influencing the whole work experience of the nurse.
the nurse-patient ratio is determined by the hosp. inst. where the nurse is working which may
have a relationship with nurse's satisfaction in the care setting

METHODOLOGY
A descriptive correlational study and
the questionnaire used is Nursing Workplace Satisfaction Questionnare was utilized to determine
the levels of work satisfaction made by Dr. Greg Fairbrother (2011) with a chronbacks alpha 0.9
From the 3 hospitals, 231 eligible nurses were selected through random sampling (Check for
Slovin’s formula that number) only 114 respondents turned in completely answered
questionnaires (other refused to answer, and some questionnaire were rejected due to
incompleteness)
Research Instrument
There were 2 questionnaire the first part was researcher made questionnaire comprising of
questions to determine demographic and work-related profiles, the second part of the
questionnaire was the NWSQ by Dr. Greg Fairbrother.
Our data collection process followed
1. Gained approval from the University Ethics Committee
2. Gained permission from stakeholders
3. Distribution of questionnaires thru NSO and corresponding head nurses
4. Answering of questionnaire by participants in their choice of time and place
5. Submission through the box provided in the NSO to maintain anonymity
6. Collection of answered questionnaires
7. Data collated into tables
8. Statistical Analysis using chi-square test at alpha .05
***Ethics consideration: The risk for this study are not beyond what is normally encountered
in daily life
DATA ANALYSIS
Table 4.1 shows the number of regular nurses working according to the four area
assignments and nurse-patient ratio classification
o In the Ward Area, 42% of the respondents work with the standard ratio of 1 is to
1-12 patients and 58% worked below the standard ratio with 13 – 30 patients and
31 – 50 and above.
o In the ICU, 57% work with the standard ratio of 1-3 patients and 43% worked
below the standard with 4-6 patients and 7 and above
o In the Operating Room and LRDR, 100% worked below the standard ratio with 2-
3 and 4 and above
o In the ER and Outpatient Dept, 11% of the patient work with the standard ratio of
1 is to 1 to 4 patients while 89% of them work below the standard with 5 – 8 and
9 and above
Table 4.2 Shows that the majority of the respondents are working within 5 days, 30% are
working less than 5 days and the remaining 14% went beyond the recommended days of
work.
In table 4.3 Data shows the most responsibility the respondents were involved in are
Evaluation and monitoring, administration of medication and fluids, and assisting
physicians in procedures for patients
Table 4.4 shows that the majority of the nurses which is 62% has worked in 1 to 2 areas,
31% worked in 3-4 areas and 7% of them worked in 5-6 areas
Table 4.5 shows the Nurse’s level of workplace satisfaction. 98% shows that the
respondents are very satisfied with the intrinsic domain which is their personal happiness.
In the extrinsic domain, 94% shows that respondents are satisfied with their work
environment. In the relational domain, 98% are very satisfied with their working
relationships. Overall results show 98% level of workplace satisfaction.
The summary of the analysis of the relationship reveals that the p-value is 0.347. This is
interpreted as there is no significant relationship between the two variables
In conclusion, our hypothesis remains true that there is no significant relationship
between the nurse patient ratio and nurse’s work satisfaction levels within the patient care
setting. This shows that the respondents are resilient when it comes to helping those in
need, regardless of the number of patients. When the patient’s needs are met, it gives the
respondents the high satisfaction level for doing a sufficient job and how they love their
job gives them strength to persevere.
