HW6

This document contains the descriptions of 5 problems involving determining equivalent force systems for various structural loadings. Problem 1 involves replacing 3 forces on a steel channel with a single force. Problem 2 replaces an eccentric compressive force on a column with an equivalent force-couple system. Problem 3 involves replacing various loadings on a beam with equivalent force-couple systems and determining which loadings are equivalent. Problem 4 involves determining cable tension and a reaction force for a loaded bracket. Problem 5 determines reactions at different angles of loading.

Homework 6

PO1TF 2016

Problem 1. The shearing forces exerted on the cross section of a steel channel can be represented by a 900-N
vertical force and two 250-N horizontal forces as shown. Replace this force and couple with a single
force F applied at Point C, and determine the distance x from C to line BD. (Point C is defined as
the shear center of the section.)

Problem 2. An eccentric, compressive 250-kN force P is applied to the end of a column. Replace P with an
equivalent force-couple system at G.
Problem 3. A 3-m-long beam is subjected to a variety of loadings. (a) Replace each loading with an equivalent
force-couple system at end A of the beam. (b) Which of the loadings are equivalent?

Problem 4. The bracket BCD is hinged at C and attached to a control cable at B. For the loading shown, determine
(a) the tension in the cable, (b) the reaction at C.

Problem 5. Determine the reactions at A and C when (a) α = 0, (b) α = 30º.
