A Report On The Computer Lab of DMAIII Rampur

The computer lab of DMAIII Rampur was established in 1987 with 8 computers and has since been upgraded. It now has 46 computers across two halls with a seating capacity of 150 students. The lab provides facilities for students from primary to intermediate levels but requires upgrades to meet current educational needs, including increasing the number of computers, improving hardware specifications, and adding newer software. The document suggests standards for an ideal computer lab including a 1:1 student to computer ratio, high-end computing capabilities, and latest software and educational suites.

A Report on the Computer Lab of DMAIII Rampur

History
The computer Lab of DMAIII is the oldest lab in the whole city, established way back
in 1987. Started initially in one small room cooled by an air conditioner, it housed 8
computer systems, bought from Olivetti Inc., the most advanced of their time, ran the
latest MS-DOS disk operating system. Computer science students were taught the
basics of DOS and DOS based applications. Mr. R.U.Khan was given the charge of
lab operations, who managed it fine for the coming ten years.

The Lab now

The lab was upgraded by time to time and now it integrates two big sized halls,
houses 46 computer systems, and a sitting capacity of 150 students, 75 per hall and
3 per computer. The lab provides facilities for students of every level, from primary to
inter mediate. Mr. Anit Arora, HOD Computer Sciences, is the lab in-charge.

Following table gives the details of the lab facilities:

The lab though proved fine a few years back, is now inadequately armed for fulfilling
the requirements of the current educational scenario, with most of the work now
being done online.
The Lab thus needs to be upgraded, as according to The specifications of an ideal
computer lab, dedicated towards the holistic development of students.
The European International Education Advisory Committee established the following
norms for a computer lab:

One student per computer

Improves learning speed and quality.

High End Computing

In order to meet the processing requirements of newly developed applications, labs
must upgrade their CPU cores every 3-4 years. The latest being Dual Core
Processors and 64bit cores from Intel and AMD respectively.
Hard disk space is important, should not be less than 40 GB, RAM >=2GB.
DVD drives are suggested, so as to support educational DVDs such as
encyclopaedia.
Internet speed is also important, should be preferably >=256KBps boardband.
Multimedia Projectors as an extension to teaching through blackboards.

Latest Software
Latest operating systems such as Windows Vista/7, Sun Solaris, Linux-3.1 so that
the students can get acquainted to a variety of platforms.
Ms-Office2007 or higher, Visual Studio for C/C++/.NET IDE. NetBeans or ECLIPSE
for JAVA/J2EE IDE.
Open source My SQL server, Latest version of adobe reader.
Latest internet browsers such as IE8, Firefox Beta and Google Chrome.
