Figure 17 - Import Scan File Select

Step 3 guides the user through the import options available. To add new scans to an
existing layout choose the layout from the dropdown list. Alternatively a new layout can be
created for the imported scans by ticking the „Create new layout‟ checkbox and entering a
name. By default scans are tiled using X, Y location data if it is available in the scan data file.
To override this behaviour tick the „Manually tile scans‟ checkbox.

Figure 18 - Import Scan Options

When manually tiling scans the user must first select the method of sorting imported scans.
This can be done by File Name or Creation Data by checking the appropriate checkbox.
Ticking the „Sort in descending order‟ sorts the scans in reverse or descending order.

13 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
Choose the tiling direction from the „Tile Direction‟ dropdown. Ticking the „Repeat every‟
checkbox titles the scans in a grid with the number or scans in a Row or Column defined in
the „Scans‟ number box.

To overlap the scans enter the amount of overlap into the „Overlap X, Y‟ number boxes. The
measurement unit can be selected by choosing either „mm‟ or „inches‟ via the associated
checkbox.

Note: If a custom origin is set before using the CMAP importer, scans can be imported
to the custom origin X, Y position.

Step 4 imports the scans into the system. The current scan being processed and overall
progress is displayed. When the import has completed the user is informed and the „Next‟
button enabled to allow the user to progress to the final stage.

Figure 19 - Import Scan Progress

Step 5 shows a summary of the import status of the selected scans, and failures are shown
in red along with a message indicating why the import failed.

Scans can now be double clicked in the Inspection Explorer to open them in the main
viewing window, with a tool menu running down the left hand side of the screen.

3.3 Inspection Explorer

The Inspection Explorer tool allows the user to navigate through a hierarchical view of their
inspection data. Right clicking on a node in the tree brings up a menu of options applicable
to the type of node.
The user can create a hierarchy of locations, assets and inspection data using the Add
options from the context menu.

Figure 21 - Inspection Explorer

Double clicking one of the available scans opens the selected item in the main section of the
window, and opens further tools in the left hand menu.

Inspection Explorer Guide:

This section contains a brief summary of the nodes that can be found in the Inspection
Explorer. Example names have been assigned for the guide. They are given generic names
which can be replaced by the end user, the example names are listed in brackets for
reference.

Repository (Your Repository); this is the overall storage area for user‟s database. Multiple
instances can exist of each of the following subfolders, in general each user has one
repository for the program.

Data Set (Example Data); contains test data for a requested inspection series.
15 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
Asset (Example Asset); the actual unit that has been tested.
Inspection (Example Inspection); the particular inspection that data has been recorded.
Scans; the actual raw data that has been collected from individual scans. Double click a
specific scan to open it in the viewing window.

3.4 Layers
Located in the left hand menu, the Layers Window allows the user to control the visibility of
elements of the current layout view, or to lock elements to prevent them from being
accidentally updated.

The eye image indicates whether the associated elements are visible. Clicking on the image
toggles the visibility of the associated elements. Similarly, the chain image toggles the lock
state of the associated elements.

Figure 22 - Layers Window

3.5 Filters
The filters tool allows the user to define a sequence of filters which are applied to the current
layout or scan. Filters are non-destructive and do not affect the underlying data and can be
added/removed and modified freely. Filters are applied to the data in sequence. To change
the position of a filter in the sequence, click the blue „Up Arrow‟ to move it upwards, or the
similar „Down Arrow‟ to move it downwards.

16 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
Figure 23 - Filters Window

To add a filter, select one from the dropdown list and click the „Add‟ button. A control panel
for the new filter is added to the tool allowing modifications of any parameters which it may
have. Checking or unchecking the „Enabled‟ checkbox for a filter toggles the effect from that
filter in the sequence.

Grow Defect; this filter can be used to smooth out missed data and to emphasise defect
areas, making them considerably easier to spot.

Simple Threshold; this filter can be used to hide data above a threshold. The threshold is
based on the percentage difference between the upper and lower bound values. E.g. the
lower bound is set to 0 and the upper bound is set to 50. If the Simple Threshold slider is set
to 50% then the data shown in the Layout View Window is below 25mm thick.

To remove a filter click the red „Cross‟ button.

3.6 Item Properties

The Item Properties window shows information of an individual scan when it is highlighted.
Information shown in the Item Properties window includes:
 Force overlay (when checked) is used to ensure the highlighted scan always shows
in-front of overlapping scans. This allows users to place smaller scans over larger
ones, meaning magnified, detailed areas of a scan can be placed over the larger
overall section.
 Name of highlighted scan e.g. In Figure 24 „Mapping Scan 05‟ is selected.

17 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
 Layout properties show the scan dimensions along with the X, Y position of the
highlighted scan. Note: The dimensions change depending on the measurement
type selected in the ‘Units’ dropdown option e.g. Imperial or Metric units.

4 CSV Importer
Files containing values that are separated by delimiter values such as semicolons, tabs,
spaces, commas and quoted values can be imported and displayed in CMAP. Follow the
steps below to import a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file into CMAP:

1. To enter the CMAP Import Data Wizard, select the CSV Importer from the drop down
menu and select the CSV file(s) to import. Click NEXT to proceed (Figure 25).

Figure 25 – CSV Importer Wizard

18 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
2. Select the appropriate options in the Layout Options window and click NEXT.
3. Enter the applicable options within the CSV Import Options window. Check the data
within the Data Preview window is correct, then select NEXT. If the CSV file is open in
another application CMAP will fail to import the CSV file. Ensure the file is closed
in all other applications before clicking NEXT.
Note: For further detail on each of the fields within the CSV Import Options window,
refer to Section 4.1 of this manual.
4. After the CSV file is imported click NEXT then FINISH to complete the CSV importer
wizard.

4.1 CSV Import Options

This section explains the options and features found within the CSV Import Options
window. Before setting the CSV import options, we recommend the following information is
known:
1. How the values within the imported CSV file(s) are separated E.g. delimiter char or
quoted characters.
2. The number of columns, header rows and footer rows to skip.
3. The minimum and maximum data range.
4. The resolution of the scan to be imported in mm‟s or inches E.g. a 2mm x 2mm or
10mm x 5mm resolution scan.
Presets
A preset contains the saved configuration settings for the CSV importer. Presets can be
created, saved and loaded. To create a preset, click on the Add new preset button (Figure
26).

Figure 26 – Add New Preset

After all of the applicable fields have been selected, the preset can be assigned a name
within the Preset name box and saved by clicking the Save preset button (Figure 27).

Figure 27 – Save Preset

19 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
A preset can be loaded by clicking on the preset name from the Presets drop down menu.

Data separator and Quoted values

Values saved in CSV file formats are usually separated by a unique character or can
sometimes be included within single or double quotation marks („ or “). The data separator
value can be selected from the Data separator char drop down menu. The options are:
1. Comma,
2. Semicolon,
3. Space,
4. Tab.
Alternatively if the data is contained within single or double quotation marks, then check the
Quoted values box and enter in the („ or “) character into the Quote character box.

Skip columns, header rows and footer rows

CSV files can sometimes contain Metadata in the headers and footers of the file, which are
required to be skipped by the CMAP CSV importer. We recommend checking if the CSV file
has any header or footer rows that need to be skipped before importing the CSV file into
CMAP and entering the values into the Skip header rows , footer rows and columns
boxes.

Sample width, height and units

The measurement unit can be switched between imperial and metric by selecting the
appropriate unit in the Measurement unit drop down menu.
The values entered into the Sample width and Sample height boxes should equal the
resolution of the scan in mm‟s or inches. If the values do not match, then the scan displayed
in CMAP will either be stretched or shrunk compared to the original scan captured.

Data range
The values entered into the Data range min and Data range max boxes should match the
minimum and maximum range, which the imported data can be saved as. There are two
examples below to further explain this:
1. Equipment is used which saves data in a CSV file between the values of 0-100 to
display material thickness loss as a percentage. The values entered into the Data
range min and Data range max boxes would be 0 and 100 respectively.

20 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
2. Equipment is used which saves data in a CSV file between the values of 0-65535 as
a 16-bit number. The values entered into the Data range min and Data range max
boxes would be 0 and 65535 respectively.

Data source and Merging with existing data

A data source name can be entered into the Data source name box, which enables users to
switch between data sources on the Layout window. Alternatively if the data source name
already exists within the Layout window the Merge with existing data checkbox can be
ticked and the appropriate data source name can be selected from the Data source drop
down menu.

Downscale filter
The downscale filter is used within CMAP when processing scans onto the Layout window
and is directly linked to the level of zoom used in the window.
If the downscale filter is set to minimum, whilst viewing scans at zoomed out levels, the
Layout window still displays detailed minimum areas of scans. If the downscale filter is set
to maximum, whilst viewing scans at zoomed out levels, the Layout window still displays
detailed maximum areas of scans.

Data preview
The Data preview window provides a preview of the data contained within the selected CSV
file after the chosen settings in the CSV Import window have been applied. The Data
preview window will also provide error messages if the CSV file cannot be imported into
CMAP. Below are some examples and possible solutions:

1. #PARSE ERROR# - Check the correct amount of header and footer rows are
skipped. Also, check the correct data separator char or quoted value is used.
2. #OUT OF RANGE# - Check the data range minimum and maximum values are
correct.
3. #INVALID COLUMN COUNT# - Check the correct amount of columns are skipped.

5 Colour Scheme Options
The colour gradient tool allows the user to modify the colour gradient used to represent the
scan data. A number of predefined palettes are available and can be accessed by using the
palette drop-down menu at the top. New palettes can be created by clicking the „Create new
preset‟ button. Palettes can be saved by clicking either the „Save changes‟ button to
overwrite the current palette or can be saved as a new palette by clicking the „Save as new
preset‟ button.

The „Lower‟ and „Upper‟ bound sliding tools can be used to adjust the range of data values
that the palette covers, alternatively the units can be entered into the specified boxes. This
range is represented in the vertical ruler alongside the palette colour bar.

Figure 28 - Colour Scheme Window

Individual regions in the palette can be selected by clicking on them in the colour bar. The
currently selected region is highlighted in red. The properties of the selected region can be
modified using the „Region‟ tools. The colour used for the start of the region gradient can be
selected by clicking the „Start Colour‟ button. The colour used for the end of the region
gradient can be selected by clicking the „End Colour‟ button. If the „Chain regions‟ checkbox
22 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
is ticked then setting the end colour for a region also sets the start colour for the next regions
(this simplifies creating continuous gradients).
The „Copy End to Start‟ button copies the current end colour for the region to the start colour
of the next region. The „Start to End‟ button copies the current start colour for the region to
the end colour. The „Flip Start and End‟ button swaps the start and end colours.

The size of the regions can be modified by placing the cursor at the intersection of the two
regions. The cursor changes to indicate it is in the correct position. Then click and drag the
intersection with the left mouse button. Alternatively, region start and end points can be
numerically defined with the „Start Value‟ and „End Value‟ input boxes.

The „Split Selected Region‟ button splits the currently selected region in two. The „Remove
Selected Region‟ button removes the currently selected region.

5.1 Colour Banding

Colour bands between thickness values can be set using the colour gradient adjustment.
Shown in the below table is the relationship between the colour division setting and the
corresponding number of colour bands required.

Colour band setup can be illustrated through the following example. To generate a banding
colour palette consisting of the following 4 colours red, yellow, green and blue:

23 Ref:OM-CMAP
Rev 1.3
Date of Release: 04/12/2015
1. Set the colour division to the appropriate number of colours bands required by using the
„Split‟ button when the appropriate region is selected, see table above.
To display 4 colour bands red, yellow, green and blue, set the colour division to 7.

2. Correctly set the colour for each colour division by using the „Start‟ and „End‟ buttons,
and the colour palette that appears.
To achieve the required 4 colour bands, set the colour for each colour division,
including the 0mm division, to the following:
red, red, yellow, yellow, green, green, blue, blue.

3. Move the position of the neighbouring divisions together to form the four distinctive
colour thresholds. If the uppermost colour division is below the appropriate position drag
the uppermost colour division to the desired location. However if the neighbouring colour
division is above the desired location, the lower division must be moved first as divisions
cannot be overlapped.
Figure 30 is an illustration of the above steps required to create a 4 colour banding palette.

Figure 30 - Editing colour banding palette

Colour gradients can be applied within each colour band by adjusting the colour for each
division. To achieve this, in step 2 set the 8 colour divisions to the following colours
dark red, red, dark yellow, yellow, dark green, green, dark blue, blue
Banding and gradient colour styles are available as pre-saved colour schemes.
