Originally it was a stamp with a nominal value of 20 cents. By the time the authorization was given, the postal rates had changed and there was a need for a
stamp of 65 cents for urgent mail. A print run of 10 million stamps was ordered. The stamp was designed, engraved and printed by the Dutch company Joh.
Enschedé in Haarlem, the Netherlands, exists in two versions: a first edition was printed in sheets of 25 (5 x 5), a second edition was printed in sheets of 100
(10 by 10). This was due to a shortage of paper. The two runs can be identified by the dimensions of the image. The first edition has an image of 26.25 by
22.5 mm, while the second edition has dimensions of 27 by 22 mm. Tanding is 11½. End of use date was May 1, 1931.
Inversion
Two sheets of the first editions had the center inverted, so that the depicted town hall is upside down. Most likely the cause of this error was similar to that
of inverted Jenny, since the Belgian stamp also has two colors. The first sheet was partially sold in the Ghent post office. After this discovery was noticed, the
manager of the Belgian Post went to Enschedé to find out if there were more. A second sheet was discovered, transported to Brussels and destroyed.
One window of the second edition was also reversed. 50 copies of these were discovered in January 1921 in Leuven. They were seized by the post office
before they could be sold to the general public. The remaining 50 were still in Holland and were cut up in the presence of Dutch and Belgian officials. The 50
discovered in Belgium were destroyed by the incineration on January 21, 1921.
Famous stamps
18 of the 25 stamps were sold in the Post Office of Ghent (Fr. Gand) on August 13, 1920. When the discovery was made, only 7 copies remained.
Value the canceled stamp is estimated at € 125,000 (in Y2019)and is one of the most expensive Belgian stamps.
