the
Hub City
Founded in 1882 by civil engineer William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg was named in honor of his wife, Hattie. In it’s early days, Hattiesburg’s
population expanded as a center of lumber and railroad industries. Because of its position at the intersections of Interstate 59 and US Highways 49, 98
and 11, it gained the nickname “Hub City”. Now people come to Hattiesburg because of its strong neighborhoods, economy and its central location in the
state, situated less than 100 miles from the state capital of Jackson as well as the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, and Mobile.
Hattiesburg blends a college town atmosphere with a growing downtown district and numerous outdoor opportunities. Students come to
Hattiesburg to attend Southern Miss as well as William Carey University. Black and gold local shops dot the streets in Hub City, supporting the Golden
Eagles. A thriving arts community lives both on campus and off, with the historic Saenger Theater, one of seven that operated in the south, situated
downtown and dating back to the late 1920’s. Also drawing in residents is Camp Shelby, the largest US National Guard training base east of the
Mississippi River. As of 2017, it’s estimated that more than 46,000 people call the city home.
For the outdoorsman, Hattiesburg has a 41-mile stretch of reclaimed railroad tracks ready for people to explore. The Longleaf Trace has visitors
walking, jogging, biking and riding horseback along its trails. The Kamper Park & Zoo, Paul B. Johnson State Park, as well as eight state lakes are situated
in and around Hattiesburg. The city is positioned at the fork of the Leaf and Bouie Rivers and in the heart of south Mississippi’s rolling piney woods.
With a proud history and an eye on the future, the University maintains a tradition of success in both academics and athletics, offering
undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 180 programs through six degree-granting colleges. A dual-campus university, Southern Miss serves
students on campuses in Hattiesburg and Long Beach, in addition to five teaching and research sites in Mississippi.
Characterized by history and tradition, the Hattiesburg campus sits on 300 acres in the middle of the city. More than 180 buildings dot a
landscape that has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly environment for students, employees and visitors. From the rustic, industrial feel of the
Power House Restaurant to the ultra-modern Trent Lott Center, the campus has a character and charm all its own in the heart of an urban setting.
The University is nationally recognized for its work in the arts, polymer and marine sciences, busi- ness, nursing, health, and education, among
other programs. Students at Southern Miss are afforded international experience through study-abroad pro- grams in more than 20 countries including
the popular British Studies program in London.

C-USA annually awards postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, Scholar-Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic
Excellence Award. Additionally, Conference USA presents a Spirit of Service Award three times each year, recognizing student-athletes who excel on the
field, in the classroom and give back to the community through significant service efforts and participation.
The conference’s footprint is concentrated with 14 members in 10 states and a combined area population of more than 30 million. With a commitment
to community involvement, the conference developed several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across
the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations.
Individually, student-athletes are recognized each season through the Spirit of Service award.

GOVERNANCE
Conference USA has significant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The presidents of the member institutions serve as the league's Board
of Directors.
A PROUD HISTORY
Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and
commissioner April 24, 1995, in Chicago. The league’s charter members were Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis,
Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the
fall of 1996.
The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and, after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named
Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first Commissioner. In October 2015, Judy MacLeod became the league’s third
Commissioner.
C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league
competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league brought in TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began
competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP became full-time Conference USA members for all
sports in 2005.
In 2013, charter member Charlotte returned to C-USA and was joined by new members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North
Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA. WKU joined the league on July 1, 2014.
“Our Department Leadership Team was focused and deliberate in our assessment and evaluation
of potential vendors. We interviewed an array of companies to find the best fit for the University of
Southern Mississippi. In the end, we found adidas to be the best partner for our Department. Our
comprehensive agreement will provide the highest quality look and feel - for the highest levels of
athletic competition. We are excited to make adidas products available to our student-athletes and
have their iconic brand across our Department,” said Jon Gilbert, Director of Athletics at University of Southern Mississippi when the deal was announced
in October of 2017.
With the new all-school deal, adidas will supply the Golden Eagles with headwear, apparel, footwear and accessory needs for all of its athletic teams.
“It’s the first all-apparel athletic deal in the history of Southern Miss athletics,” Jon Gilbert said. “Before, we were with a variety of partners. We were able
to get every sports program under one apparel umbrella. It’s really important on a number of factors. One, we’re with a global apparel company, they are
known worldwide, they have a broad reach with their marketing plans and Southern Miss athletics will benefit firsthand from that partnership.”

Jon Stuart
HEAD COACH | FIFTH YEAR | SPECIALTY: SPRINTS
Jon Stuart has been at the helm of the Southern Miss Track and Field program since July of 2014.
For the 2019 season, Stuart coached the team to the highest Indoor National Championships finish ever at 35th and highest at Outdoors
ever at 24th. Qualified Caleb Parker, Eric Richards, John Warren, and McKinely West for both indoor and outdoor NCAAs. McKinely West
set Conference USA records on his way to his second 60m and second 200m championships indoors. The men’s team placed fourth at the
Conference Meet and the women placed fifth at indoors. The team had five All-Americans for indoor and four All-Americans for outdoor.
Under his watch, the Golden Eagles had six Conference Champions indoors and six Conference Champions for outdoors. He had eight
student-athletes accomplish school records across the season. The men’s team was ranked as high as fourteenth in the indoor rankings.
Southern Miss swept the Male Athlete of the Meet accolades for indoor at Conference and had the Male Field Athlete of the Meet and the
Women’s High Point Scorer of the Meet for the Outdoor Conference Championships, as well as the Male Field Athlete of the Year. The
women’s team was named All-Academic by the NCAA.
In the 2018 season, Stuart’s success was extended, earning the title of C-USA Outdoor Women’s Coach of the Year, as well as the women
winning the C-USA Outdoor Championship, taking second place at the C-USA Indoor Championship, and the men taking second place at
the C-USA Indoor Championship. Seven student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor National Championship, while five were named
NCAA Outdoor All-Americans. He had three athletes named to the C-USA Academic Team. Four student-athletes were named C-USA
Indoor Champions while six were named C-USA Outdoor Champions. McKinely West and John Warren were named Track Athlete and
Field Athlete of the Meet at both C-USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, respectively. West became a three-time NCAA Outdoor All-
American (100m, 200m, 4x100) and is only one of two athletes in the nation to final in three events (100m, 200m, 4x100). Warren was
named a Triple Jump All-American, as well as finished 6th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
During the 2017 season, Stuart continued his success with a C-USA Indoor Gold Medal in the men’s 100m and two Outdoor C-USA Gold
Medals in the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin. Over the course of the season the teams broke seven school records: indoor
women’s distance medley relay, indoor women’s weight throw, indoor men’s weight throw, outdoor 1,500m, women’s 5000m, women’s
hammer throw and the men’s outdoor 4x100m relay. Stuart had fourteen athletes, a school record, qualify for the East Region NCAA
Championships and had two advance to Eugene for the Championships.
In 2015, the Men’s team scored its’ first points at the Men’s NCAA Championships since 2004, and climbed to 6th place in the Women’s
C-USA Championships. Stuart also led an assault on the Southern Miss record books, taking down school records in the men’s indoor
200m, men’s indoor 4x400m relay, women’s indoor 4x400m relay, women’s indoor 400m, women’s outdoor 400m, women’s mile run,
women’s Distance Medley Relay, men’s javelin, and women’s weight throw. In total, Stuart had 8 athletes qualify for the first round of the
NCAA Championships (East Region), and three to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Stuart, a 20-plus year veteran of coaching track and field, becomes only the fourth Golden Eagles’ top coach after most recently serving
as men’s sprints and hurdles coach at his alma mater, The University of Georgia.
The Bulldogs posted three All-Americans during outdoor season, including senior Johnathan Smith, who finished 16th in the country in
the 100 meters at 10.27. The men’s 4x400 meter relay team posted a 16th place as well, while junior Drew Branch posted 17th place in
the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meter hurdles.
Johnathan Smith, in his first season with the Bulldogs in 2013, clocked a 10.20 100-meter dash time to advance to the NCAA
Championships in an event that routinely features times that are competitive worldwide. In 2012, the former Bulldog sprinter led his
4x400 relay team to both the NCAA indoor and outdoor meets and his 4x100 team to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Seven-time
All-American and three-time SEC champion Torrin Lawrence also earned All-America certificates in the 400 at both indoor and outdoor
Nationals in 2012 after capturing the 2010 NCAA indoor title in the event. Lawrence was named the USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Track
Athlete of the Year for his efforts for the third time in his career. He officially ended his UGA career by shooting to No. 2 in the school
record books with his 45.40 at the 2012 Olympic Trials semifinals. Stuart’s sprinters and hurdles set 20 fresh marks in the Bulldog indoor
and outdoor all-time top-10 lists during the 2012-13 seasons.
Stuart qualified his 4x100 team, 4x400 relay team, Lawrence in the 400 and Phillip Adams in the 400 hurdles, who clocked a 51.12 at the
NCAA East Prelims, for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships after altering the school record books in three of the four events during
the season. Prior to competing outdoors, Lawrence earned runner-up honors at the 2011 NCAA indoor meet after completing his 400 in
45.96.
In just his second season under Stuart’s tutelage in 2010, the electrifying Lawrence won an NCAA title, an SEC title and was named
the 2010 USTFCCCA National Male Track Athlete of the Year. He clocked the third-fastest 400 collegiate indoor time in history (45.03)
followed with an SEC meet record time of 45.10 to clinch his conference crown.
Stuart led New Jersey native Justin Gaymon, who completed his eligibility in 2009, to three SEC championships as well as six All-America
certificates combined in the 400, 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay during his career. Gaymon finished atop Georgia’s all-time lists in the indoor
400 (45.94), 400 hurdles (48.46) and the indoor 4x400 relay (3:07.45). He also joined David Dickens, Brian Etelman and Michael Proctor
as they clocked the second-best outdoor time in school history in the 4x400 relay at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships to finish fifth
(3:04.13) and earn All-American distinction. Thanks in part to Stuart’s crew, the Georgia have men nine top-20 NCAA finishes since 2000.
Georgia sprinters have had an array of memorable experiences over the last number of seasons. In 2007, Stuart helped Dickens cap his
career off in style as the Wheeler High School graduate broke the school’s indoor 400 record (46.27) at the SEC Championships. After
Gaymon topped that indoor 400 time in 2008, Stuart guided Lawrence, then a freshman sensation, to the No. 2 spot on the all-time list
after Lawrence crossed the finish line in 46.18 in 2009. Lawrence shattered the No. 1 mark in 2010.
Lawrence, who hails from Jacksonville, Fla., set the school’s indoor 200 mark after opening the 2009 season with a 20.77 and a win at
the Kentucky Invitational. Stuart continued Lawrence’s development at the national meet as Lawrence earned All-American honors in the
event.
During the 2006 campaign, Stuart saw Dickens break the indoor 200 record (21.05) and earn All-American honors at the NCAA indoor
meet. Dickens, who scored in four events at the SEC outdoor meet, joined Gaymon, who advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor
Championships in the 400 hurdles and moved to the then-No. 3 spot in the school record books in the event (50.20), as two of the top
performers in the conference.
In 2005, a pair of Bulldogs led another outstanding group of Georgia sprinters and hurdlers and showed why their program is one of the
most highly-respected programs in the nation. LaRon Bennett, who completed an outstanding career in Athens, and Demiko Goodman,
who began his career at Georgia in an impressive fashion, were Georgia’s leaders throughout the season. While Bennett logged a career-
best time in the 110 hurdles (13.86) in the early rounds of the SEC Championships and then took fifth in the 400 hurdles at the NCAA
Championships, Goodman, a receiver for the Bulldog football team, finished in third place in the 400 (a career-best 46.23) in the NCAA
Regional meet and placed 16th in the NCAA Championships in his only complete season at the collegiate ranks.
In 2004, Stuart coached Bennett to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and a seventh-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Bennett’s time in the 400 hurdles ranks him atop the Georgia all-time list. Stuart also guided the men’s 4x400 and 4x100 meter relay
teams to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1999 and 1987, respectively. The 4x100 meter relay team posted a season
best time of 39.60 to place third at the East Region Championships while the 4x400 meter relay placed second with a season-leading
mark of 3:06.23. It marked the first time in school history that both relays were represented at the NCAA Championships. Indoors, Stuart’s
sprinters have continued to rewrite the Georgia record books with new marks in the 400 with Lawrence’s performance and 4x400 relay
(Gaymon, Michael Proctor, Phillip Adams, Lawrence; 3:07.45). In all, Stuart’s sprinters sit atop the all-time lists in five different sprints.
Stuart coached the women’s 1,600 meter relay teams that qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships from 2001-2003 and the 2000
team that qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and set the school indoor mark. He also guided Ken Garrett to a school record and
NCAA qualifying mark in the 400 meter hurdles in 2001.
Prior to returning to Georgia, Stuart served as the head track and field coach at ULM for a season. The Indians placed 16th on the men’s
side at the 1999 NCAA men’s outdoor track and field championships under Stuart’s direction, producing three All-Americans as well
as one national champion in Andras Haklits. Before his coaching stint at ULM, Stuart led a nationally recognized sprint squad at the
University of Texas-Arlington for three years. While at UTA, he helped produce 20 Southland Conference Champions and 11 NCAA Division
I All-Americans. Stuart also helped the Mavericks capture nine Southland Conference team titles.
Before his collegiate coaching career, Stuart was the head track coach at East Paulding High School in Dallas, Ga., where his athletes set
11 school records.
Stuart started his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs under John Mitchell, from 1993-94. He earned his Bachelor of
Science in Physical Education at Georgia in 1992 and his Master of Education in Physical Education in 1994.
The 1992 UGA graduate is married to the former Gail Moreland in December 2002 and has two sons named Jake and Scot.

Jeremy McClain
First Year
University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett introduced Jeremy McClain as the university’s
sixth athletics director at Trent Lott Center on April 8, 2019.
“This evening we begin the next chapter for The University of Southern Mississippi’s storied athletics
programs,” said Bennett. “I could not be more excited to welcome home Jeremy McClain as our Director
of Athletics. Jeremy is a true Golden Eagle – someone who knows us, someone who understands us, and
someone who is highly capable of leading our athletics programs into our bright future.”
McClain returns to the University after serving as the Director of Athletics at Troy University since August of 2015. He served as the
Deputy Director of Athletics at Southern Miss for three years prior to his departure to Troy.
“My family and I are thrilled to be coming home to Southern Miss,” said McClain. “We all have great memories associated with Hattiesburg
and the great people of the Pine Belt. I want to thank Dr. Bennett for the opportunity to lead the athletic department and in turn make a
difference for this institution. I look forward to hitting the ground running soon and getting to work helping our student-athletes, coaches,
and staff take this program to new heights.”
During his time at Troy, McClain hired Chip Lindsey early in 2019 to run the school’s football program as well as named a new head men’s
basketball coach Scott Cross.
Under McClain, the football program won 31 games, tied for the most wins over the last three seasons by Group of Five conference
schools with Boise State and UCF. The Trojans won three-straight bowl games and a Sun Belt Conference title, while earning a national
ranking and recording a historic victory at LSU in that time period. In addition, the football program enjoyed record attendance the
last three seasons. The men’s basketball team won the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and made its first appearance in March
Madness since 2003, while the women’s basketball team captured 82 games over the last four seasons with a pair of Sun Belt Conference
Tournament titles and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Troy finished in third place in the 2017-18 Bubas Cup standings, which is the
Sun Belt Conference’s all sport trophy; the best finish in Troy’s 13-year history in the league.
As for facilities, the long-anticipated Troy Football North End Zone Facility broke ground in the fall of 2016 and opened in the summer of
2018. The $25 million facility is the state-of-the-art home to the football program with new coaches offices, locker room, weight room and
team lounge. Additionally, the project added 400 luxury seats to Veterans Memorial Stadium and a new high-definition video board.
McClain dedicated his first year at Troy to improving the fan experience with the implementation of several new gameday initiatives, the
unveiling of a new ticketing system and spearheading a redesign of the Athletics website, TroyTrojans.com.
At Southern Miss, McClain oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Department, and was responsible for revenue generation,
which included licensing, corporate development, fundraising and ticket sales.
As the primary fundraiser for the Golden Eagles, McClain led a staff that set records in 2013 for the annual fund and the overall Southern
Miss Athletic Foundation. He was also responsible for securing funding and supervising several major facility projects.
Prior to his time at Southern Miss, McClain served as Director of Athletics at Delta State University for five-plus years, beginning in
2007. While at Delta State, McClain developed a plan to increase student-athlete services. McClain also increased donations to the
school’s athletic department, securing funding for the first phase of DSU’s Athletic Master Plan. Delta State’s on-field successes also
increased under McClain. During his tenure, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen claimed seven Gulf South Conference championships,
five NCAA Regional crowns and 21 NCAA postseason appearances. In 2010, the football team appeared in the NCAA Division II National
Championship Game and in 2012 the baseball team earned a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II College World Series.
McClain earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Delta State in 1999, where he was a Division II All-American in
baseball. He also earned his M.B.A. from Delta State in 2002. After graduation, he played five years of professional baseball.

white higher education institution in the state of Mississippi.
As President, Bennett is charged with serving as the chief executive officer and principal educational officer
of the university, being responsible to the Board of Trustees for every facet of institutional operations. Not more than a week after the
announcement of Dr. Bennett as president, a tornado struck the Hattiesburg campus and surrounding community. Thankfully, no lives
were lost, but several buildings were damaged or destroyed. He led the institution’s recovery and provided William Carey University
temporary space at Southern Miss. Because of this gesture, William Carey honored him with a doctor of humane letters, honoris causa.
In July of 2017, Dr. Bennett donated the money he recieved as a raise in his salary to the scholarship fund at the University. The
Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning awarded him a raise worth $72,630, but in an email to the campus community, told of his intent
to not keep it. He stated “I am sensitive this increase comes at a time when so many employees have not received pay increases, have had
positions eliminated or have had positions in their units unfilled. As such, I have decided to use this salary increase to endow a second
scholarship through the USM Foundation.” Jim Coll, Communications Director for the University, commended Dr. Bennett, saying that
since his hiring, he has been committed to the “retention, progression, and graduation of USM students.”
As Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Georgia, Dr. Bennett was actively involved in all facets of student life, from
improving facilities to creating service learning opportunities and celebrating the spirit of diversity on campus. He helped raise funds to
enhance student life on campus and improved communications with faculty, staff, students and parents on the Athens campus and three
UGA extended campuses.
Dr. Bennett served as Chair of the UGA Athletic Association NCAA Recertification process, including the institutional self-study. In
addition, he was a member of the on-site committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, reviewing compliance areas
related to student life and student affairs.
Dr. Bennett holds a Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Administration from Tennessee State University in Nashville, a Specialist
in Education Degree and a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration from Middle Tennessee State University in
