Instruction Guide Combiflex Crimping Tool

1) This document provides instructions for using a crimping tool to crimp COMBIFLEX pins and sockets. It details the crimping process and specifications for 10A and 20A connections. 2) The crimping tool is checked through tensile testing of connections and verification of preload force and gauge measurements. Preload is adjusted by turning an axel counterclockwise. 3) A correctly crimped connection will have a minimum crimped surface length, visible strands in the crimped area, and the socket insulation supported properly. The tool should be inspected twice per year when in regular use.

Inspection * The pliers are adjustable to 0.25 mm2 for 10 A.

The pliers are checked by subjecting the lead and the
attached socket/pin to a tensile test, and by means of Changing to 0.25 mm2
preload and gauge testing. 1) Remove the cover plate
2) Remove the setting wheel
Preload verification (Refer to “Adjustment of the preload”, steps 3-5)
1) Squeeze the plier handles together until the last
ratchet releases (without pin or socket in place). Note: It is possible to use the crimping tool without
2) Read maximum force, F, about 40 mm from the the socket locking device on the locator
top of the handles.
3) If necessary, adjust the preload (refer to Maintenance
“Adjustment of the preload”) - For reliable contact crimping, make certain that
all pins, joints, and bearing surfaces are clean
Gauge verification and protected with a thin coat of oil
1) Squeeze the crimping tool handles together until - The crimping tool should be adjusted when nec-
the last ratchet releases essary, and be subjected to routine inspection
2) Check with cylindrical “stop and go” gauges twice/year. If the crimping tool is in continuous
3) If the stopguage passes through, when the preload use, inspection should be more frequent
has been verified, the pliers have to be serviced - When not in use, keep the pliers in the closed
position

The crimping tool may be sent to ABB Network

Partner AB for inspection and service.
