Report Composit Position

Composite Position is used to report the location of a pattern of features (PLTZF) in relation to datums as well as the position of each feature within the pattern (FRTZF). It uses two Feature Control Frames, with the upper segment defining the tolerance for the pattern location and the lower segment defining the tolerance for each feature's location within the pattern. Datums can be specified in the lower segment to define the orientation of the features within the pattern. In CMM-Manager, Composite Position is selected from the Report menu to output the tolerances and datum references for both the pattern location and individual feature locations.

Composite Position Explained

Composite Position is used in conjunction with traditional True Position to report the location of a
pattern of features in relation to the Datum Structure (PLTZF) as well as the position of each
feature in relation to the pattern (FRTZF). Composite Position uses two Feature Control Frames
to define PLTZF and FRTZF, each Feature Control Frame could have a unique Tolerance,
Material Modifier and Datum set.
See Example below:

Figure 1

DEFINITION A positional tolerance defines a zone within which the center, axis, or
center plane of feature of size is permitted to vary from a true
(theoretically exact) position; or a boundary, defined as the virtual
condition, located at the true position, that may not be violated by the
surface or surfaces of the considered feature.

PATTERN-LOCATING Where composite controls are used, the upper segment is referred to
as the pattern-locating control. The PLTZF is located from specified
TOLERANCE ZONE
datums by basic dimensions. It specifies the larger positional tolerance
FRAMEWORK (PLTZF) for the location of the pattern of features as a group.

FEATURE-RELATING The lower segment is referred to as the features-locating control. It

governs the smaller positional tolerance for each feature within the
TOLERANCE ZONE
pattern (feature-to-feature relationship). Important: Where datum
FRAMEWORK (FRTZF) references are not specified in the lower segment of the composite
feature control frame, the FRTZF is free to be located and oriented
within the boundaries established and governed by the PLTZF. If
datums are specified in the lower segment, they govern the orientation
of the FRTZF relative to the PLTZF.

Consider the following example. Note the Composite Position of the (3) hole pattern on the
bottom right corner of this drawing.

Figure 2
The PLTZF (Ø0.8) is located from specified datums (ABC) by basic dimensions. It specifies the
larger positional tolerance for the location of the pattern of holes as a group.

Figure 3

The lower segment is referred to as the features-locating control. It governs the smaller positional
tolerance (Ø0.25) for each feature within the pattern (feature-to-feature relationship). The FRTZF
is free to locate and orient within the boundaries established and governed by the PLTZF. Datum
A governs the orientation (perpendicularity) of the FRTZF.

Figure 4
To report Composite Position in CMM-Manager select Composite Position from Report in the
Main Menu. Select the features to be reported, Enter the Tolerance for PLTZF & FRTZF, select
material modifiers if any and select the Datum Features. Note: The Alone checkbox is used
when two Single-Segment Control Frames are used, providing Basic location and orientation.
Note: This option will affect the reported FRTZF results. Please refer to the ASME Y14.5M-1994
Standard section 5.4.1.3 for additional information. See the examples below:
