Open Source Assingment

Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. Open source hardware is part of the open source culture that takes the open source ideas to fields other than software. A person can take open source software, including an Operating System such as Linux, and modify and change the program to suit their needs.

Meaning Of Open Source Software

- Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code
and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a
software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain.

Meaning Of Open Source Application

- An open source application software is something for which the source code is
available for download and anybody can modify it and release subsequent
versions of the same provided they mention the version of the source using
which they modified.

Meaning Of Open Source Hardware

- Open source hardware refers to computer and electronic hardware that is designed in the same
fashion as free and open source software (FOSS). Open source hardware is part of the open source
culture that takes the open source ideas to fields other than software.

Meaning Of Open Source OS

- Open-source means that you can get the source code of the software for free (source code
is the code of the program written in a certain programing language). Operating system is
the software that you use to operate your PC (like Windows or Linux)
2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM

2.0 Meaning
- a person can take open source software, including an operating system such as Linux, and can
modify and change the program to suit their needs

2.2 Example Of Open Source OS

-The Solaris Operating System (as with most operating systems based upon open standards
and/or open source) uses UFS as its primary file system.
-Additional features include Veritas (Journaling) VxFS, QFS from Sun Microsystems,
enhancements to UFS including multiterabyte support and UFS volume management

-Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to provide personal

computer users a free or very low-cost operating system comparable to traditional
and usually more expensive Unix systems

Feautures

-Linux is publicly open and developers can write programs that can be ported to
other operating systems

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning Of Open Source Application Software

- An open source application software is something for which the source code is available for download
and anybody can modify it.

3.2 Example Of Open source Application Software

- open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets,
presentations, graphics, databases and more

Feautures
- A completely open development process means that anyone can report bugs,
request new features, or enhance the software.

- Easy to use

- can be downloaded and used entirely free of any licence fees.

- jME (jMonkey Engine) is a high performance scene graph based graphics API. jME was built
to fulfill the lack of full featured graphics engines written in Java. jME is completely open source
under the BSD license.
Feautures
- jME is a scenegraph based architecture.
- jME's camera system uses frustum culling to through out scene branches that are not visible.
- jME supplies the user with easy to use, but powerful application classes for building the
application.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1 Meaning of Pervasive Computing

- Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction or
also called Pervasive Computing
5.2 Example of Pervasing Computing

• Advanced high bandwidth networking services

• Networked devices, sensors, instruments, interfaces

• Information and computational resources, organized as a ubiquitous service grid

• Converged telecommunication including global wireless voice and data broadband

networks

• Human-machine interaction technologies

• Software "agent" technologies

6.0 CONCLUSION

By working through this module, I have investigated open source through reading, and Surfing.
Through our investigations, we have produced two artifacts:

• A collaborative document, in the form of a wiki, which represents our understandings of

open source
• Individual products, which may take a variety of forms, that allow us to promote our
understandings of open source to our students

I now hopefully have acquired an increased understanding of open source, which may leave with
additional questions and curiosities.
