ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I have taken efforts in this project. However, it
would not have been possible without the kind
support and help of many individuals. I would like
to thank my principal Mr. R.N. Senthil Kumar and
school for providing me with facilities required to
do my project. I am highly indebted to my Biology
teacher, Miss. Geetha Unni, for her invaluable
guidance which has sustained my efforts in all the
stages of this project work. I would also like to
thank my parents for their continuous support and
encouragement. Mu thanks and appreciations also
go to my fellow classmates and the laboratory
assistant in developing the project and to people
who have willingly helped me out with their
abilities.

INTRODUCTION
My experiment which determines the variation in
heart rate while playing video games is useful
because it can test the difference in the amount of
stress video game puts on an individual player. The
normal heart rate for an average person is between
60 to 100 beats per minute. Video games that are
usually calm and played while sitting down, and
also those that require light physical activity, turn
out to increase the heart beat by an average of
about 20 beats per minute. Video games that
require intense physical activity can increase a
person’s heart rate by a large amount such as by
75% to 100%.
Video games may affect the heart rate directly or
indirectly affect our health. Research has also
revealed that playing video games help burn
calories, lose weight, and could replace the need for
outdoor activities in the future. The factors that
affect heart rate can be physical stress, diseased
heart, emotional stress and medication.

ABSTRACT
Heart rate is the rate at which the heart
beats. It is usually measured to obtain a
quick evaluation of a person’s health. It is
useful because it can help people find out if
they are living a healthy life or not. People
usually check their heart rate at a doctor’s
office or during and after workouts. In my
experiment I compared three video games
and tried to find out which one increases
my heart rate more.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the change in

other’s heart rate before, during,
and after playing three different
video games, that is Free Fire,
Call of Duty, an NHL-14.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Free Fire game

2. NHL-14 game

3. Call of Duty game

4. Pen

5. Paper

6. Stethoscope

METHOD
1) Pick three video games that are Free Fire,
NHL-14 and Call of Duty.
2) Play each game for 10 days for 30 minutes
each day.
3) For each time a game is played, the heart
rate must be recorded before the game and in
every minute interval during the game.
4) Record the data on a sheet of paper.
5) Calculate the data on a sheet of paper every
time a game is played.
6) Repeat steps 4 to 5 for all the three video
games for 10 days each.
7) At the end of 10 days period 35 trials of
heart rate must be recorded for each game.
8) In this experiment each game has been
played at 7 pm in the same room, on the same
couch, before dinner, and also the same room
temperature.
9) This experiment will determine whether
video games will increase our heart rate
more.

OBSERVATION
In my hypothesis I predicted that all video games will
show a greater increase in heart rate. My hypothesis was
correct but NHL-14 only increased my heart rate by less
than one beat. Overall there was no significant results
because the heart rate would usually increase and
decrease by 5 beats. The only abnormal day for NHL-14
was on the 4th day of testing when average heart rate was
94.7 but on the 5th day it was 79.3.
With Call of Duty Ops 2, heart rate only had one
abnormal day. On the 8th day heart rate was 93.5 but on
9th day heart rate was 79.3.these were the only abnormal
problems. I think that rising and falling pattern and
average of 5 was created because some games were slow.
Not only Call of Duty had this abnormal behaviour but
Free Fire also had this problem. I think it is due to lot of
violence in the game and the stress it creates in the
players.
With my research I found out that video games do
stimulate a rising and falling pattern in our heart rate
and there is nothing abnormal about it. The sudden drop
in average heart rate during certain games could have
been due to the fact that the game was of a slower
intensity. It could have also been due to the amount of
violence in the game.

Conclusion

My conclusion was that Call of Duty and Free

fire increased the heart rate more than NHL-14,
thus making my hypothesis correct. NHL-14 did
increase my heart rate but it was still less than
how much Call of Duty Ops 2 and Free Fire
increased the heart rate. This is because Call of
Duty Ops 2 and Free Fire are more violent
games and violence increases our heart rate.
So playing these types of games that is Call of
Duty and Free Fire should be avoided by heart
patients and old age people.
