Detailed Lesson Plan in Science V

The document provides a detailed lesson plan on conductors and insulators. The objectives are for students to identify materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity. The lesson involves students connecting various materials to wires and observing if a light bulb lights up. Materials like coins, nails and staples that allow electricity to pass through are conductors. Materials like rubber bands, cloth and paper that do not allow electricity to pass through are insulators. The lesson aims to teach students the difference between conductors and insulators.

1. Motivation

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

How do electricity flow to your light bulb at

home?
The teacher will demonstrate how electricity
flow using a simple electrical circuit.
 What did you observe?  The light bulb lights up.
 What makes the light bulb lights up?
 How did the light bulb able to receive  The light bulb lights up because the
power from the battery? battery supplies power to the light
bulb through the wires.

 What do you see?  A battery, wire, light bulb and a

switch.
 This model is called a simple electrical
circuit.

 The teacher will demonstrate how the

electrical circuit work.

 What happened when I open the  The bulb lights up.

switch? When I close the switch?  The bulb did not lights up.

 At home, we also have a switch to

open and close our lights or a socket
where you can plug your appliances.

 Why do you think that when you plug  The plug is protected with a thick
your appliances, you did not get coating of plastic.
electric shock?

 That thick coating of plastic is called

insulators.

 Insulators – materials that don’t allow

electricity to pass through

 What happened when you plug your  The electricity will pass through the
appliances that is peeled off? body or we will experience an electric
shock.
 That is called conductors.

 Conductors – materials that allow

electricity to pass through.

2. Presentation of the objectives and the lesson

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

 Our topic this morning is about

conductors and insulators.
At the end of the lesson you are expected to
demonstrate understanding of the effects of
heat and electricity, light and sound on
people and objects and identify materials
that are good conductors of heat and
electricity.
3. Pre-Activity

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

a. Presentation of Materials
b. Divide the class into three (3) groups.
c. Each group will be given ten (10)
minutes to finish the activity
d. Choose one (1) representative who
will present the group’s work
e. Setting of Standards
 When doing a group activity what are  Work silently
the things we should remember?  Cooperate with my group mates.
 Respect the ideas of one another.
 Finish our work on time.
B. Exploration

Activity Proper
 Please see attached activity sheet.

C. Explanation

1. Let the group present their answers in class.

2. Discussion

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

Answer the following questions.

 What happened to the light  The light bulb lights up.
bulb when objects were  The light bulb did not lights
connected to both ends of the up.
wire?
 Why do you think the light of  The light of the bulb lights up
the bulb lights up? Did not because some of the objects
lights up? allows electricity pass to
through them or they are called
conductors.

 The light of bulb did not lights

up because some of the objects
did not allow electricity to pass
through them or they are called
insulators.

 Inspect the objects that make  They are made of iron and
the light bulb lights up, what metals.
are they made of?
 How about those objects that
did not make the bulb lights  They are made of rubber,
up, what are they of? plastic, cloth, wood.

D. Extension

1. Read the following information written on the visual aid.

2. Concept Formation

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

 Can you give examples of  needle, coin, iron nail, safety pin,
materials that are good staple wire, screw
conductors of heat and
electricity?

3. Application

Your younger brother and sister are playing near the electric socket. They have toys
made up of metal and iron. You knew that those are good conductors of electricity. What
should you do to avoid accident that involve electric shock?

V. Evaluation

Write C if the object is a conductor and I if it is an insulator.

ACTIVITY PROPER

“What materials are good conductors of heat and electricity?”

Materials:

 coin  thread
 eraser  staple wire
 paper clip  button
 iron nails  needle
 sharpener  safety pin
 key  screw
 strips of colored paper
 rubber band
 cloth

What to do:

1. Gather all the materials on the table.

2. Connect each given materials on both ends of the wire, observe what happens.
3. Record your observations on the table below.

Materials that are conductors of heat and Materials that are insulators of heat and
electricity electricity

1. What happened to the light bulb when objects were connected to both ends of the wire?
2. Why do you think the light of the bulb lights up? Did not lights up?
3. Inspect the objects that make the light bulb lights up, what are they made of?
4. How about those objects that did not make the bulb lights up, what are they of?
Background Information

Electrical current – is the flow of electrons along conducting

wires. Electrons can be transferred from one object to another through
conductors like metals.

Insulators – prevent the flow of electricity such as plastic materials,

cloths, glass and wood.

Electric circuit – is the flow of electric current. An electric circuit

usually contains a source of electrical energy and parts that consume
the electrical energy.
