Kinds of Shops
In England, most shops have easy names like 'toy shop' and 'book shop'. But there are a few
shops with special names. Here are ten of them that you need to know.
1. GREENGROCER'S a. a shop that sells, paper, pencils, pens, printer cartridges and
things for an office.
2. BUTCHER'S b. the place you go to buy alcohol. They often sell cigarettes and
snacks as well.
3. BAKER'S/BAKERY c. Sells fruit and vegetables. Sometimes they sell a few
other things like eggs and milk.
4. CHEMIST'S d. a shop that sells, nails, screws, tools and other heavy metal
things. They also sell paint, glue and other useful things for the
home.
5. STATIONER'S / e. sells meat. Nowadays, most people buy their meat in
STATIONERY SHOP supermarkets but you can still find a traditional butcher’s shop
in most large towns.
6. IRONMONGER'S / f. is like a small supermarket where you can buy all sorts of
HARDWARE SHOP food, drink, stationery but it is more expensive than a
supermarket would be. Corner shops are usually in residential
areas.
7. FLORIST'S g. sells bread and cakes and usually they make them in the same
building.
8. NEWSAGENT'S h. a shop that sells flowers. Most good florists also sell plants in
pots and can send flowers to someone in another city
9. OFF LICENCE i. where you go to buy drugs. We use the word 'pharmacy'
sometimes in the UK, but we never say 'drug store'.
10. CORNER SHOP j. we go to this shop to buy newspapers and magazines. They
also usually sell cigarettes and sweets.
11. DRY CLEANER'S k. a shop in which newspapers, magazines, calendars etc. are sold
12. FISHMONGER'S l. a shop where clothes are cleaned
13. BOOKSHOP m. a shop that sells goods which are suitable for giving as a
present
14. GIFT SHOP n. a shop that sells fish
15. PET SHOP o. a large shop divided into several different parts. It sells many
different items
16. DEPARTMENT STORE p. a shop where pet animals can be purchased
