Method Statement for Transformer Testing
1 Introduction
This method statement has been developed to comply with client’s requirements and will serve
as technical guidelines to the testing of Transformer Testing. This method statement will serve
for SAPT Phase II. This method statement is with reference to client’s specifications, quality
procedures and other related standards.

2 Scope
Transformer Testing

3 Test Equipment Required

The following equipment will be used for the scope of work covered under this method of
statement
1- Insulation Tester
2- Turn Ratio Tester
3- Hi-Pot Tester
4- Winding Resistance Tester
5- Three Phase Supply

4 Method for execution of Activity

4.1 Manpower Requirement
1- Testing Engineer
2- Technicians
3- Helpers
All the power tools and testing equipments will be operated by competent persons.

4.2 Detailed Work Procedure
1- Mechanical Check and Visual Inspection

1. Verify nameplate ratings are in accordance with the approved drawings and specifications.
2. Inspect for physical damage/ defects and mechanical condition.
3. Verify tightness of accessible bolted electrical connections by calibrated torque-wrench
method.
4. Verify earth connections.
5. Labels/Marking Rating Plate Correctness Checks.

2- Insulation Resistance Test

The voltage shall be applied between:

1. Primary to secondary.
2. Secondary to ground.
3. Primary to ground.
Test voltage limits mentioned in table below. The ambient temperature shall be noted down during
test.

Table – Test Voltage Limits

Rated voltage Test voltage
100-1000V AC/DC 1000V DC
>1000 to 5000V 5000V DC

3- Winding Resistance Measurement

Winding Resistance test is to confirm that the measured resistance of HV and LV windings must
match the factory test results; this resistance is measured with a ohm meter.
- Ensure the contacts at the bushing are clean.
- Hold the sensing probes across the conduct between with the contact resistance is to be
measured (Test Current 5A DC)
- Observe the reading and record in the test format.

4- Ratio Measurement
- Ensure that both the Primary and Secondary windings are not connected to any cables/ Bus bar.
- Ensure that Tap Changer in the lowest tap position.
- Apply three phase supply voltage (415 V AC) across the Primary Termination of the
Transformer.
- Measure the secondary (LV) voltage at the LV Termination, Observe the reading and record the
test format.
- If the tap changer is OFF load type, switch of the power supply and rise on step and apply the
three Phase 415 V AC at primary winding, and measure the voltage at the secondary winding.
- The above step to be carried out until the highest tap.
Alternatively, test is performed with a digital ratio meter which measures the ratio value of the
transformer and simultaneously checks the vector group and the polarity.

5- High Voltage Test

Objective of HV test is to determine the equipment is in proper condition to put in service, after
installation for which it was designed and to give some basis for predicting whether or not that a
healthy condition will remain or if deterioration is underway which can result in abnormally short
life.

Test Instruments Required for HV Test

Calibrated VLF hi-pot test set for switchgear with leakage current indicator and overload protection.

6- Vector Group Checks

- Ensure that both the Primary and Secondary windings are not connected to any cables/Bus Bar.

- Connect the “R” phase of the Primary winding and the “R” phase of the Secondary winding
(Short R phase of primary and secondary termination).

- Apply 3 Phase supply voltage (415 V AC) across the Primary Termination of the Transformer.
Measure the voltage at the both primary and secondary termination at all the phases. Observe
the reading and record in the test format.
