1. What are eddy currents? Write any two applications of eddy currents.
2. A solenoid is connected to a battery so that a steady current flows through it. If an iron
core is inserted into the solenoid, will the current increase or decrease? Whether the
current flowing through the solenoid higher of lower than this value, if instead of a
battery, an a.c. source of same effective value would be connected to the solenoid? Also
state what type of change in current is observed in this case on insertion of iron core into
the solenoid.
3. An alternating voltage of frequency f is applied across a series LCR circuit. Let fr be the
resonance frequency for the circuit. Will the current in the circuit lag, lead or remain in
phase with the applied voltage when (i) f>fr (ii) f<fr? Explain your answer in each case.
4. Using the concept of simple harmonic oscillation obtain expression for the frequency of
electromagnetic oscillations in parallel LC circuit. Hence show that the energy remains
conserved during these oscillations in an ideal LC circuit.
5. The magnitude of electric current is increasing from A towards B. If there is any induced
current in the loop shown in figure, what will be its direction?

6. An electric lamp having coil of negligible inductance connected in series with a capacitor
and an AC source is glowing with certain brightness. How does the brightness of the
lamp change on reducing the:

12. Explain the principle of the working of transformer. Why cannot such a device be used to
step up DC voltage?
13. A town is situated 15 km away from a power plant generating power at 440V, requires
800 kW of electric power at 220V. The resistance of the two wire line carrying power is
0.5 ohm per km. The town gets power from the line through a 4000-220V step down
transformer at a substation in the town.
i. Find the line power losses in the form of heat.
ii. How much power must the plant supply, assuming there is negligible
power loss due to leakage?
iii. Characterize the step up transformer at the plant.
14. Define the term impedance of a circuit. Derive the condition of resonance of a series LCR
circuit.

15. In the series LCR circuit, suppose R = 300 Ω, L = 60 mH, C = 0.5 µ F. An ac source of
emf 50 V, angular frequency 10,000 rad/s is connected across the combination. Find the
reactance XL, and XC, the impedance Z, the current amplitude I, the phase angle φ, and
the voltage amplitude across each circuit element.
16. A resistor of resistance 400 Ω, and a capacitor of reactance 200 Ω, are connected in series
to a 220 V, 50 Hz ac source. If the current in the circuit is 0.49 A, find the (i) voltage
across the resistor and capacitor (ii) value of inductance required so that voltage and
current are in phase.
17. Explain with the help of diagram, the principle and working of an AC generator.
18. Describe the energy losses that occurs in the transformers.
19. A device ‘X’ is connected to an a.c. source. The variation of voltage, current and power in
