MARTI SBR
MARTI Compact SBR Package Waste Water Treatment Plants are designed to satisfy the
needs of small communities, hotels, resort areas, service stations, caravan sites and
construction sites. These Sewage Treatment Facilities provide practical, economical and
uncomplicated but still very effective treatment efficiency.
The Package Type Wastewater treatment plant for the Merdare CCP is designed to meet
the discharge standards of the treated water and its quality to be in compliance with the
European Directive from 21 May 1991 year (91/271/EEC) and by considering the
requirements set forward by the European Standard EN12255.
MARTI SBR unit type for domestic wastewater treatment system is capable for the
satisfactory treatment of the full range of loads, and with satisfying to provide the
required treatment specified for a service life of 25 years, necessary provisions is made in
the case of operation and maintenance and if considered in the future it is possible to
extend and modify the plant.
MARTI SBR unit type provides a cost effective wastewater treatment with a reliable
method of operation.
Applied SBR process results in a very efficient effluent quality within a very small volume.
The Modular unit is designed to fit the customer requirements. Methods of treatment in
which the removal of contaminants is brought about by chemical or biological reactions
are known as unit processes. The treatment levels of the process are defined below;
Preliminary treatment – gross solids such as large objects, rags, grit, sticks, floatables are
removed that may damage equipment. “Mechanical Screen and Grit Removal” is the
equipment used for preliminary treatment in the plant.
Secondary treatment – biological processes are used to remove most of the biodegradable
organic matter (in solution or suspension). Removal of biodegradable organics, suspended
solids and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) are also done in this level. “Sequencing
Batch Reactor” technology is used for secondary treatment in order to remove
biodegradable organic matter in the plant.

“Activated Carbon Filter” and “UV Disinfection” are used as tertiary treatment unit in the
plant.
Sludge treatment – since the excess sludge from the system is low it would be recycled
back to the equalization basin through a progressive cavity pump.
The Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) process can be described as a fill-and-draw activated
sludge system for wastewater treatment where wastewater is added to a single “batch”
reactor, treated to remove undesirable components and then discharged. In an Activated
Sludge process all the unit processes are in work at a given point of time, on the other
hand in an SBR process, all these unit processes takes place within a single tank for their
specific duration and intervals, sequentially spaced over a span of time.
A single batch reactor can be used to achieve aeration and clarification. SBR systems are
better suited when there is a low and intermittent flow condition. By having a small
footprint the SBR process is useful for areas where the available land is limited, and the
cycles in the system can be easily modified for nutrient removal in the future. When
treatment beyond biological treatment is required the SBRs tend to be very cost effective.
SBR technology has gained immense popularity and is being preferred over the continuous
flow process due to reduction in energy consumption and enhancement in the selective
pressures for BOD, nutrient removal and control of filamentous bacteria. By effectively
automating the SBR process, we would be able to achieve high effluent quality in a very
short aeration time.

3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The flow explanation of the wastewater treatment plant is given below according to
treatment levels.
The wastewater enters treatment plant from Mechanical Screen, where big particles and
grit larger than 10 mm are removed and collected in a Removable Basket. Then
wastewater flows by gravity to the Preliminary Equalization Tank (Septic Tank). This tank
would provide a homogenous mixture of water that is free from solids and also a steady
flow. This tank is used to overcome peak flows and make sizing of package type WWTP as
small as possible. Also this tank will act as the Primary sedimentation, where TSS removal
will occur. The wastewater is pumped to the MARTI SBR tank by 2 Feed Pumps (1 pumps
on duty, 1 pump is on standby).
Package type MARTI biological process is used to remove the biodegradable organic matter
(in solution or suspension). All stages used in waste water treatment have been included in
MARTI SBR in which sequencing batch process is used.
There are five basic operating modes in an SBR process namely, Fill, React, Settle, Draw,
and Idle. The time duration for each mode within the tank can be adjusted to meet the
different needs. In the first mode, which is the fill phase, the raw wastewater is received
by the tank which comes in contact with the active biomass left inside the tank at the end
of the previous cycle, the fill process in this design would be an aerated fill process and it
would take 1 hour for the fill process. In the React phase the completion of the biological
reactions responsible for the degradation of organics is intended. It is also designed to
achieve a high degree of nutrient removal as well. During the aerated react phase, the
aerobic reactions initialized during aerated fill are completed and nitrification can be
achieved, in Nitrification the ammonia-nitrogen is converted to nitrite-nitrogen and
ultimately to nitrate-nitrogen. Nitrification takes place with the highest rates during the
react phase and fill phase where aeration is practiced, in an SBR denitrification is
achieved when the aeration is reduced or stopped so that anoxic conditions form. The
React phase would be 4 hours long to achieve the required treatment quality. In the
Settle mode, there is quiescent conditions in the SBR, there is no influent or effluent
currents to interfere with the settling process as in a conventional activated sludge
process. The Settle phase would take 2 hours to complete. After the Settle phase there is
the Draw phase where a decanter is used to remove the treated effluent, the decanter
used in the design is a floating decanter, which offers several advantages over

fixed decanter such as maintaining the inlet orifice slightly below the water surface to
minimize the removal of solids in the effluent removed during the Draw phase. The
floating decanters are also used to offer the operating flexibility of varying fill-and-draw
volumes. The decant phase would take 1 hour to complete. At the end there is a 1 hour
long idle phase to let mixing of the biomass to condition the reactive contents and wasting
of excess sludge. Scum will automatically be collected from the surface of the
sedimentation tank and returned back to the preliminary equalization tank.
As a summary:
1. Filling Phase: The blower would start when the wastewater enters the reactor by
the lift pump.
2. Reaction Phase: When the filling phase ends the wastewater would stop entering
the reactor, but the blower would continue to provide O2 for microorganisms
which would remove the organic material in wastewater.
3. Sedimentation Phase: When the Reaction phase ends the blower would stop and
the wastewater would start to settle at the bottom of the reactor at the end of
sediment.
4. Discharge Phase: The treated water would be discharged by pumps to the receiving
environment, and thus completing the cycle.
During the winter time to prevent freezing and keep the wastewater temperature of the
Marti SBR tank above 12 degrees the unit is equipped with a heating system. Heating
system comprises of Thermal Oil Pipe inside the Biological Treatment and an electrical
heater of 5 kW. The Temperature of oil can be adjusted by the Thermostat and when
needed the water temperature can be kept at desired temperature level. The
temperature of the biological unit will be measured by a thermometer as soon as it gets
down 12 degrees the heater will automatically operates and keep the temperature always
above 12 degrees.
After the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) tank the overflow is pumped to the Automatic
Sand Filter by the Centrifugal Pumps and after the sand filter it is fed into an Active
Carbon Filter and at the end it passes through a UV disinfection unit before discharging
into the Firefighting tank.
Chlorination before the Sand Filter is done. It is necessary both for disinfection and sake
of the sand filters. If a sand filter runs without chlorinated or disinfected water algal
growth takes place inside the sand filter and cause clogging problems in a very short time
because of filling the pores by algal biomass.

Filtration is a solid-liquid separation in which the liquid passes through a porous medium
or other porous material. To remove as much fine suspended solids as possible. The
application area varies among different industries like water treatment plants,
wastewater treatment plants and process water preparation plants. In all previously
mentioned uses, the objective is to produce a high-quality effluent the sand filters are
automatic sand filters which filters TSS in the treated effluent.
I. Filtration: The water is pumped to inlet water pipe of the sand filter; water is
filtered through different sand layers varying from 1 mm to 5 mm in diameter. The
filtered water is discharged through filtered water pipe.
II. Backwash: The pores between sands start to clog during filtration steps and cause
reduction in filtration efficiency. The period for backwash can be monitored and
controlled by manometer which measures pressure of the sand filter. Usually for a
pressure difference of 1 bar between pump and sand filter indicates that the filter
has started to clog. When the backwash process starts; on the contrary of
filtration, the water is pumped from the bottom inlet and discharged from the
upper inlet of the sand filter to remove clogging particles from the pores. The
effluent is discharged to a backwash channel or pipe.
III. Rinsing: After backwash step, rising steps starts to remove any accumulated
particles at the bottom from the sand filter to a backwash channel or pipe. Then
the systems turns again filtration step.
IV. Following the rapid sand filtration water is filtrated more by Active Carbon Unit
and disinfected again with UV Disinfection Unit.
According to the EN12255 standard each of the Tertiary Treatment Units can be
bypassed for maintenance.
Temperature control of the tertiary treatment units will be maintained by heater inside
the container and will have 5 kW heating capacity and can be operated when the ambient
temperature goes below zero.
Excess Sludge is taken from the bottom of the SBR tank by mono pump and pumped to the
first portion of the Preliminary Equalization Tank.
2x5 kW heating power capacity wire heater will be supplied for further usage in necessary
conditions.

3.5 SAMPLING
According to the EN12255 sampling points are provided for taking samples easily in the
upstream and downstream of the treatment plant.
I. It will threat the water to the desired parameters and the effluent water will have
better parameters than expected.
II. The system is fully transportable and can be transported easily from one place to
another
III. Each part of the system can be operated separately and in any other location.
IV. Operation of the system will be automatic and it will need very limited labor force.
V. All equipment used in the system are easy to maintain and no maintenance parts.
