Egg Shell

This document describes an experiment to estimate the amount of calcium carbonate in egg shells. The experiment involves dissolving egg shell pieces in hydrochloric acid. The amount of acid reacted is determined by titrating the leftover acid with sodium hydroxide solution. Using the volume of hydrochloric acid reacted and a conversion factor, the amount of calcium carbonate in the egg shells is calculated. The student carried out the experiment on two egg shell samples and reported the estimated amount of calcium carbonate for each sample in the results and conclusion section.

OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT

TO ESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF CALCIUM

CARBONATE IN EGG SHELL.

5
REQUIREMENTS
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Beaker

2. Burette

3. pipette

4. Measuring cylinder

5. Conical flask.

6. Eggs
7. 1 M HCl solution

8. 1 M NaOH solution.

9. Phenolphthalein indicator

6
THEORY:-
Calcium carbonate reacts hydrochloric acid by the following
chemical equation:
CaCO3(S) + Dil. 2HCl --> CaCl2 (aq.) +CO2(g)+H2O(l)
When egg shell is completely dissolved in known excess quantity
of Dil. Hydrochloric acid gets consumed with calcium carbonate
from egg shell.
The volume of unreacted hydrochloric acid can be determined by
titrating the reaction mixture with
1 M NaOH solution . Thus it is possible to determine volume of
hydrochloric acid reacted with calcium carbonate from egg shell
and hence it is possible to estimate the amount the amount of
calcium carbonate by using the volume of hydrochloric acid
that actually react with calcium carbonate .It can be estimated
by using the following
conversion factor.
2000ml 1M HCl= 100 gm CaCO3

7
PROCEDURE

1. Break the egg shell of an egg remove all its contents

crush in.
2. Take 100 ml 1 mol HCl solution in a beaker and add
to it the crushed the egg shell.
3. After complete evolution of CO2 gas titrate the
mixture with 1 mol NaOH solution by solution adjust
the upper level with zero mark.
a) Rinse and fill the burette with the 1 M NaOH
solution adjust the upper level with zero mark.
b) Take the complete mixture of egg shell and HCl
and add to it 2-3 drops Phenolphthalein and titrate it
with 1 M NaOH solution from burette till colour
changes from colourless to faint pink.
c) Note the burette reading.
d) repeat the for another sample
