The key takeaways are that the spread of aquatic invasive species through ballast water is a major threat, and regulations like the IMO Ballast Water Convention and USCG requirements aim to reduce this risk through treatment systems.

The main regulations discussed are the IMO Ballast Water Convention, which entered into force globally in 2017, and the more stringent USCG regulations that have been in force since 2013. Ships operating in US waters need a USCG-compliant system. PureBallast 3 has approval under both regulations.

PureBallast 3 is available in Ex and non-Ex versions. It uses UV technology and has performance over a wide range of water conditions. It is highly flexible and modular with a range of flow rates. It has low operational costs.

Legislation
• The United Nations recognizes the spread of aquatic invasive species
as one of the four greatest threats to the world’s oceans.
• That is why IMO Ballast Water Convention is in force since 8th September 2017
• A ship-owner/ship operator that intends to deballast within the US, must also have
a US Coast Guard compliant BWTS latest before the vessels compliance or
extended compliance date

IMO Ballast Water Convention: Global USA: Local and stricter

• Required 30 States & 35% of world GT • Regulation in force since
• Status: 68 States & 75% of world GT December 2013
• In force since 8 September, 2017 • 6 type-approved systems
• 70 some type-approved systems • Alfa Laval received USCG TA
December 23, 2016

PureBallast 3 is one of only six systems that has

both IMO and USCG TA certificates and the only with rev. G8 Cert.

Implementation Schedule (July 2017)
• The IMO BWM Convention entered into force Sep 8th, 2017

• From Sep 8th, 2017 all vessels subject to the convention need to
have an approved ballast water management plan on board and
maintain a ballast water record book

• From Sep 8th, 2017 Ballast Water Exchange need to be

conducted until a BWMS is installed

• Newbuilding vessels constructed after Sept 8th, 2017 need to

have a BWMS installed

• Existing vessels need to be equipped with a BWMS at the next

UV Technology

How does it work?

www.alfalaval.com
UV reactor working principle
The main treatment process take place inside the UV reactor, where the micro organisms in the water are exposed to UV
light, which renders them completely harmless.
The UV light breaks the DNA chain resulting in an internal connection (T+T) making it impossible for the micro organisms
to reproduce.

Before UV treatment After UV treatment

UV-Disinfection Process
The performance by UV-light depends on the UV-dose and the
intensity.
If the UV-transmittance is low, it is important with a high intensity in
order for the light to “penetrate” the water.
UV-dose = intensity X exposure
time

Important factors in reactor design

are:
• Mixing
• Intensity
• Distance to quartz sleeve
• High minimum dose
• High minimum intensity
• Even distribution

PUREBALLAST
OPERATION

www.alfalaval.com | PureBallast Sales presentation May 2018

OPERATION
START-UP

During Start-up, the UV Lamps are warmed up for 90 sec. Cooling water is
pumped through the reactor to secure they are not overheaded
OPERATION
BALLASTING

Ballast water is pumped from sea chest to filter, after that, water is finally
led to UV reactor
OPERATION
FILTER BACKFLUSH

Backflushing is performed during ongoing process without interrupting the

ballasting process. Backflushing water is returned to the sea directly.
OPERATION
CIP – REACTOR CLEANING

CIP (Cleaning in place) is performed to clean the reactor. The cleaning

liquid is reused.
OPERATION
DEBALLASTING

The water passed through the reactor but the Filter is bypassed, because the
water was previously filtered during ballasting
OPERATION
TANK STRIPPING

A stripping process is similar to a deballast process; in both processes the

filter is bypassed.
OPERATION
BYPASS

Ballast process won´t be stoped by a system failure. Ballast water will go to

Ballast tank directly from sea chest. Bypass valve is controlled by ISCS
(Integrated Ship Control System)
Main parameters that effect treatment

• SALINITY
− For chemical systems this is a limiting factor
− UV systems are independent of salinity

• FRESH WATER (low salinity)

− Can be challenging for all types of technologies

• TEMPERATURE
− For chemical systems this is a limiting factor
− Medium pressure UV systems are independent of the BW temp.
− Low pressure UV systems are often dependent on the BW temp.

• UV-T
− Chemical systems are not influenced by UV-T
− Main parameter for UV systems

Efficient filter

• Basket filter with 20 µm mesh from

Filtrex
• Automatic backflush
• Noble materials (filter housing in
bronze alimunium)
• Rotating backflushing arm secures
that the entire filter area is cleaned
• Short backflush time
• Extremely compact
• Available for 10 bar
• Approved for fresh water

Filter Operation • Filtration
Status

▪ Differential pressure indicator (4) in clean condition

▪ Motor (2) is not operating

▪ Nozzle (1) is not turning

▪ Backwash valve (6) is closed

Working Principle • Filtration

The fluid enters from (A), and flows through the filtering element (3)
▪ (inside-outside filtration).

The filtered fluid is collected in chamber (D) and exits from (B).
▪ During this phase, the filter operates as a static filter. As a result, the
cleaning process does not take place.

As the filtering element begins to get clogged, the differential pressure

▪ Δp shown on the indicator (4) gradually increases, until it reaches the
set-point value.

▪ The Phase 2 starts (backwash cleaning during filtration).

www.alfalaval.com | PureBallast Sales presentation May 2018

Filter Operation • Filtration & Cleaning
Status

▪ Differential pressure indicator (4) at set point

▪ Motor (2) is operating

▪ Nozzle (1) is turning

▪ Backwash valve (6) is open

Working Principle • Filtration & Cleaning

Filtration is continously ensured by the filtering element (3) (inside-

▪ outside filtration).

While the filtering element (3) provides the filtration of the fluid, the
element sector in front of the nozzle (1) is cleaned by the reversed
▪ backwash flow. This is caused by the differential pressure between
chamber (D) and pump suction side (outside-inside flow).

The impurities are carried away by the same filtered fluid, through the
duct, the open valve (6), and the backwash line (J). At the end of the
▪ backwash set time, the motor (2) stops and the backwash valve (6)
closes. As a result, the filter returns to Phase 1.

UV Lamp and quartz sleeve
performance
• Medium pressure lamps for
higher intensity
− 15 to 20 times the germicidal
effect than other lamps
− faster disinfection and greater
penetration destroying
organisms
− broader wave form creating
permanent damage DNA
• Synthetic quartz sleeve for
optimal disinfection of treated
water
− combined with the Medium
Pressure lamp produces UV-dose = intensity X exposure time
extended wavelength range
− optimises UV tranmissivity

Maintained performance with CIP
• Percentage change of UV transmission after repeated fouling, increasing power
consumption and/or reducing the UV dosis.

• CIP will restore performance and maintain it at a maximum level.

• It is obvious CIP is necessary to maintain the performance of the system.
