Analysis report of English Teaching (Video 9)

Learning Process on Annisa Thahrina Sari’s video

A. Short Description of English Teaching – Learning Process on the video.

Firstly, before the teacher start the teaching, she open the class by say greeting.
She say, “ Good Morning.” and the students answer,” Good Morning.” And the teacher
ask about their condition by saying,” How are you?” then, the students answer,” I’m fine,
thank you.”. It is a usual way to open a learning activity in a class.

Following the opening section, the teacher asks about their last meeting class. The
teacher asks if the students still remember about their last meeting discussions. Their
discussion was about descriptive text. Then, the teacher tries to make a grouping by
distributing the card. Firstly, the teacher explains about the card. She said that each
student can only take or have one card, not more than one. There are two picture in each
card. The pictures are the things that the student or the teacher easily find in daily life. for
example, cupboard, bag, bed, and etc. Then, the teacher share or distribute the card to the
student. After that, the teacher starts grouping the student by the first picture of every card
that the student got. The students that have the same picture have to make their group and
move their seat. Then, the students have to make a short description about their second
picture. The teacher walks around the class and looks at the student’s discussion and make
sure they discuss the picture. The teacher gives some time to the students to do the
discussion to describe the picture.

Than, the teacher tries to describe a thing. The students have to guess the thing.
The group of student that have the same first picture thing that the teacher has described
before they have to stand up and continue to tell the description of their second picture.
Then, the other group student that has the same description of thing, but in their first
picture, has to continue the role. They have to stand up and continue to describe their
second picture.

After that, the teacher changes the activity. The teacher has made scrambled
sentences. The sentences are some examples about descriptive sentences. Every group
has one sheet of paper that consists of a sentence that is scrambled. Each group has to
rearrange the sentence to be an arranged sentence. Then, each group has to read their
arranged sentence in front of the class. The other student has to decide is the sentence is
well arranged or not. The teacher will give the correct answer to the student if they make
a mistake. After that, the other group will continue to read.

The last activity that they get in the class is a reading comprehension questions.
The students have to answer the questions individually. They have to answer the question
based on the text.

The video ends with the teacher gives review about the material that the students
have learned that day. The teacher asks the students to make a short example of
descriptive text. The teacher shows a picture from the previous keycard and the students
describe it orally. The teacher corrects all mistakes that the student made.

Next, the teacher closes the meeting for that day. She says to meet again with the
students next Saturday. Then, she says greeting and the video ends.

B. The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Teaching and Learning Process

- Strengths

1. The Learning Process is Fun

The teacher uses a card with some colored pictures. It can make students more
interested in learning English. It can also help the student to describe the pictures of things
on the card.

2. The teacher shows her role as facilitator

The teacher shows her role as facilitator. She does not show that she is the only
source of the science. The students learn the material by themselves. The teacher only
provides and corrects mistake. We can see that in the learning process when the teacher
gives card and make the group. So, the students learn the material from their discussion
in their group. It makes the student know more and can improve by themselves, not by
the dictations from the teacher. It also can make the students help each other.

- Weaknesses

1. Each student has their own abilities in English

Some students are easy to learn English, but some of them do not. When the
teacher make group in the class and it does not depend on their own ability, it can make
the slow-learner difficult to understand. So the teacher should give more attention to these
students

2. spent a lot of time

This learning process consuming a lot of time because the teacher let the students
learn by themselves. It makes the teacher take care about the time.

C. My opinion about Method/Approach/Technique used by the teacher

As I think, the teacher has a good approach and method. She uses CLL method. It
is Community Language Learning. This method allows student to learn a language by
themselves in a discussion group. The students discuss the material with their friend. The
teacher’s role is only a facilitator. The teachers are not allowed to join the discussion. The
teacher can only look at the groups and do nothing. The teacher let the students improve
their speaking skill by themselves.

The teacher uses that method to the students in this video. She walks around the
class and look at what the student do. If the student make mistake, the teacher let that
happen. After that, she gives the correction to the student.

The teacher uses an interesting approach. She uses a card with a colored picture.
The students have to make a short description based on the picture. The teacher pushes
the students to describe the picture in group. The students also feel comfortable because
they make the short description with their friend, not alone. So, they do not feel guilty if
they make a simple mistake.
Beside that approach, the teacher also uses scrambled sentences. In this approach,
teacher also lets the students rearrange the sentences in group. They rearrange it and read
it in front of the class. It trains their confidence and reading skill in English. It brings a
lot of benefit in this activity to the students.

The last approach is the reading. It is a good material to give in the end of the
class. You can do this to know how well your students understanding with the material.
It is better than give them a test. The student can understand the material more than before.
Because, they read the example of a descriptive text and then try to answer the question
based on the text.

The teacher uses a good technique of learning too. She walks around the class
when the students make the discussion. It makes the student focus to discuss the material
not the other things. She also corrects the mistake when the students make mistake in the
discussion.

D. My suggestion to the Method/Approach/Techniques applied by the teacher.

First of all, I think the teacher in this video uses a Grammar Translation Method.
It is because she translates her spoken English to a native language (Bahasa Indonesia).
My suggestion is to reduce the use of native language. You can use the native language
but just a little amount. Try to speak using English more than the native. It makes the
students push themselves to speak and listen in English.

When the teacher has to push herself to talk in English a lot, it means she has to
correct her grammar and pronunciation. She made a terrible mistake in her opening. She
said,” are you remembered?” it should be,” Do you remember?”. She made mistake in
pronouncing ‘suggest’ too. As a teacher, we should be a good example to our student,
especially in English whatever the skill we taught.
