2.Two blocks A and Bare resting against a wall and the floor as shown in Fig. 2Find the
value of the horizontal force ‘P’ applied to the lower block that will hold the system in
equilibrium. Coefficient of frictions is 0.25 at the floor, 0.3 at the wall and 0.2 between the
blocks.

3. A ladder of length 4 m, weighing 200 N is placed against a vertical wall and a horizontal
floor, and it makes an angle of 60º with horizontal floor. The coefficient of friction
between the wall and the ladder is 0.2 and between the floor and the ladder is 0.3. The
ladder, in addition to its own weight, has to support a man weighing 600 N at a distance
of 3 m from A (bottom end of the ladder). Calculate the minimum horizontal force to be
applied at ‘A’ to prevent slipping.
4. A7.0 m long ladder rests against a vertical wall, with which it makes an angle of 45º, and
on a floor. If a man, whose weight is one half of that of the ladder, climbs it, at what
distance along the ladder will he be, when the ladder is about to slip. The coefficient of
friction between the ladder and the wall is 1/3 and that between the ladder and the floor is
1/2.
5. A horizontal bar 1m long and of negligible weight rests on rough inclined planes as
shown in Figure If the angle of friction is 15º, determine the minimum value of x at
which the load Q= 200 N may be applied before slipping impends.

10. The pulley shown in figure weighs 600N and has a radius of 0.8m, a rope passing over
this pulley supports 800 N load at one end and 400 N at other end. Determine the tension
in the stream and the angular acceleration of the pulley if the blocks are allowed to move.
11. Find the power of a locomotive drawing a train whose weight including that of engine is
420KN moving up having a slope 1 in 120 at a steady speed of 56 KMPH. The frictional
resistance being 5N per kN .
12. By using work energy equation, calculate the velocity and acceleration of the block A
after its slide of 6m from rest as shown in figure below. If the coefficient of kinetic
friction is 0.3, find the tension in the string.
13. A flywheel weighing 50KN and having radius of gyration 1m loses its speed from 400
rpm to 280 rpm in 2 minutes. Calculate the retarding torque acting on it, change in its
kinetic energy during the above period.
