Lab Manual Mec320 PDF

This document provides instructions for laboratory experiments in computer aided design and analysis. It includes procedures for assembling mechanical components like rivet joints, nuts and bolts, and hinges. It also describes how to create detailed drawings with bills of materials and balloons. Mechanisms like slider crank, gear trains, and cams are modeled. Structural analysis of 2D and 3D beams is demonstrated, including applying loads and boundary conditions. Evaluations assess assembly, drawing, mechanism modeling, and structural analysis abilities. The final evaluation involves a project submission.

Modeling a Spur Gear
Model a Spur gear by using the following commands along with relations. [Mirror,
Extrude and Pattern command]

Nomenclature:
d = pitch circle diameter
db = base circle diameter
da = addendum circle diameter
dr = root circle diameter
ϕ = pressure angle
m = module
z = number of teeth
Relations used:
d = m×z
db = d × cos(ϕ)
da = d + 2.5m
dr = d – 2m

Equation of involute (to be used in Creo)

tr = t * 3.142 / 180
r = db*cos(ϕ)/2
x = r*(cos(t) + tr*sin(t))
y = r*(sin(t) – tr*cos(t))

Step1:
Create involute.
After creating new part, select Datum  Curve  Curve from equation

Select coordinate system for reference

14
Click Equation and enter the equation

Step 2
Create gear tooth
a. Start sketch and select the plane on which involute profile is made.
b. Create three circles corresponding to dimensions of Dedendum, pitch and addendum circle

c. Create reference from involute made in step 1 and make a spline on the involute. The points
can be clicked randomly on the involute up to the addendum circle.

15
d. Create a centreline through center of circle and pitch point (point of intersection of pitch
circle and involute)
e. Create another centreline on upper side of the first centreline and set angle between them
equal to 90÷z

f. Make a line from end of involute to Dedendum circle and delete base circle
g. Using 2nd centreline (made in step e), create mirror of involute and line (created in step f)
and trim extra lines

h. Finish the sketch and extrude the gear tooth

16
Step 3
Create pattern of gear tooth
a. Select the gear tooth and click on pattern

b. Choose pattern by axis, select suitable (z) axis as axis of rotation, specify number of teeth
and
click finish

Step 4
Create gear blank using extrude command

Structural Analysis of 2D and 3D Beams
2D Analysis

Problem: Find the maximum stress and deflection of a cantilever beam of 100mm long
with a load of 100N at the free end.

Procedure:
1. Open new part file
2. Open the sketch and draw a line of 100mm as shown below

3. Click ok on the sketcher

4. Now click on Applications tab

19
5. Click on Simulate and will open a window as shown below

6. Click on Refine Model tab click on Beams. It will open a window as shown below

7. Here Beam has to be defined by edges/curves in the references and click on the line
you have drawn.

20
8. Go to more option in the materials tab and select the material

9. Go to beam section and Click on NEW. Then select the section and specify its
dimensions

10. The Click ok

21
11. Go to home Tab and click on Displacements to fix the end of the beam
12. In references select points and click on any one end of the line
13. Now fix all the rotations and translations and click ok, as shown below in figure

14. Go to Force/Moment option and apply the load as shown below at the free end
15. Select points in the reference and apply a load of -100N in Y direction as shown
below

22
16. Go to Analysis and Studies option => New Static Analysis=> ok => Start run

23
17. Go to review results find the stress in Quantities and Display => Animate

3D Analysis: 3D Analysis of Beam

Procedure:
1. Create a beam with extrude command in the part file and click on Applications and
click on Simulate as shown below

2. Go to Model Setup and click on Advanced option and select 3D

24
3. Go to materials and there select any material from the material library and after that
click on material assignment

4. Click on Displacements option and fix one end

5. Select the Surface option in the references and click on the surface to be fixed as
shown below

25
6. Then go to Force/Moment and in the references select Edges/Curves and apply the
load

7. Go to Refine Model and click on Auto GEM and click on Create

8. Click on Simulation Display and in the mesh tab click on Shrink elements click ok

26
9. Go to Home tab and click on Analysis and Studies and click on File New Static
Analysis => Start the Analysis=>Review Results=>Stresses
