1.2 INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
INDUSTRY PROFILE
The electronic industry in India dates back to the early 1960s. Electronics
was initially restricted to the development and maintenance of the fundamental
communication system including Radio Broadcasting, telephonic and
telegraphic communication and Augmentation of Defense capabilities. Until
1984, the electronic sector was primarily Government. 1980s witnessed a rapid
4
growth of the electronic industry due to sweeping economic chances, resulting
in the liberalization and Globalization of the country.
HISTORY
The electric power industry began in 19th century and this led to
the development of all manner of inventions. Gramophones were an early
invention and this was followed by radio transmitters and receivers and
televisions. The first digital computers were built in the 1940s with a slow
development in technology and total sales. In the 1970s and 1980s, the vacuum
tube, was largely supplanted by semiconductor components as the fundamental
technology of the industry. In the 1990s the personal computer became popular.
A large part of the electronics industry is now involved with digital technology.
Indian electronic industry dates back to the early 1960s. electronics was one
industry initially restricted to the development and maintenance of fundamental
communication system including radio broadcasting, telephonic and
telegraphic communication and augmentation of defense capabilities,
until1980s witnessed a rapid growth of the electronics industry due to sweeping
economic changes, resulting in liberalization and globalization of the economy.
5
The economic transformation all over the world was motivated by 2 compelling
factors, the determination to boost economic growth and to accelerate the
development of export-oriented industries like the electronic industry.
WORLD SCENARIO
Globally, during the early 2000s, end users of passive electronic components
like capacitors namely original equipment manufacturers were applying
continuous pressure on the industry to lower prices. This had a devastating
impact on profitability, as many capacitor manufactures were forced to produce
components at or below the cost of production. In addition, the industry was
forced to contend with a generally weak economic climate, heightened
competition from the likes of Asia, and downturns in leading and markets like
telecommunications equipment and computers. These negative conditions led to
workforce reductions, consolidations, plant closures, and a reduction in overall
capital spending and production capacity.
INDIAN SCENARIO
6
world. The electronics industry in India started with radio manufacturing in the
1850s. The setting up of the Indian telephone industry in 1950s at Bangalore
gave a boost to this industry. It now meets the needs of post and telegraph,
defence, railways, electricity boards etc. There are more than 100 units in the
private sector producing electronic and telecommunication equipments. The
Indian electronics industry is also helping the development and growth of space
technology.
India produced electronic goods worth more than 70000 crores in 2001-2002.
Bangalore is the largest center of electronics goods production, and is rightly
called the ‘Electronic Capital of India’. It is expected that the software exports
would account for about half of the total foreign earnings of India.
The electronic industry of India constitutes just 0.7% of the global electronic
industry. However the demand in the Indian market is growing rapidly and
investments are flowing in to augment manufacturing capacity. India however
remains a major importer of electronic materials, components and finished
equipment amounting to over US$12 Billion in 2005. The output of the
electronic hardware industry is worth $11.6 billion in the year 2007. India is
also an exporter of a vast range of electronic components and products for tire
following segments of display technologies, entertainments electronic optical
storage devices, passive components, EMS etc.
In the 1960s, the U.S. consumer electronics industry went into decline as
manufactures were unable to compete with the quality and pricing of foreign
products, especially the electronic goods produced by Japanese companies such
as Sony and Hitachi. By the 1980s, however, US manufactures became the
7
world leaders in semiconductor development and assembly. The govt. is
supporting the Indian Electronics Hardware Technology park.
STATE SCENARIO
The state government had earlier brought out an electronic system. Design and
manufacturing policy to boost the sector in the state. Kerala’s GDP grew an
impressive10.3%between 1999-00 and 2005-06 reach US$24.44 billion. In the
electronic industry there has been 30% growth in domestic demand for
electronic goods. A self-contained electronics technology park, Trivandrum has
been established which is fast attracting electronics manufacturers worldwide.
The state has an advantage of the availability of skilled and semi skilled
workers for the electronics industry. The government of India has launched the
Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidhyautikaran covering 14 district of kerala US$49.3
million sanctioned to implement the scheme during first phase covering seven
districts.
CURRENT SCENARIO
The present position of electronics and IT hardware industry has been clearly
depicted in the report of the national task force on information technology and
software development. Electronics manufacturing is facing both challenges and
opportunities in 2017-18. The need to control costs continues to be a priority for
manufactures, while new technologies enter the landscape providing revenue
opportunities but requiring manufactures to partner with technology solution
8
providers and other organizations that can supply capabilities outside of the
company’s core focus.
The nature of electronic trends in 2017-18 is such that every trend comes along
with challenges. Electronics manufactures will focus while balancing the need
to control costs, integrated technologies outside of their primary areas of
expertise, and meet customer demands for more efficient, eco-friendly
manufacturing process and electronics.

sectors, with the change in the policy regimes after liberalization, the industry
experienced restructuring. Man power requirements compelled the British to
pass the ‘Indian Defense Force Act’ in 1917 which provided for creation of the
university corps (UC) as a constituent of the British Indian Defense Forces.

KELTRON is a public sector enterprise owned by the government of Kerala
and is managed by a board of directors.
11
Industries and Competitors in 1980. Since that time the 'five forces tool' has
become an important method for analyzing an organizations industry structure
in strategic processes. Porter identified five competitive forces that shape every
single industry and market. These forces help us to analyze everything from the
intensity of competition to the profitability and attractiveness of an industry.
The five key areas namely;
1. The threat of entry,
2. The power of buyers,
3. The power of suppliers,
4. The threat of substitutes, v. Competitive rivalry.
The easier it is for new companies to enter the industry, the more cut throat competition
there will be. Factors that can limit the threat of new entrants are known as barriers to
entry. The threat of new entries will depend on the extent to which there are
barriers to entry.
Government legislation and action.
Brand loyalty of customers.
Distribution channels are controlled by existing players.
Legislation and government action.
12
There are no substitutes for the particular input
The products being produced by Keltron are mostly controlled by
government, no any other supplier.
III. BARGAINING POWER OF BUYERS
This is how much pressure customers can place on a business. The bargaining
power of customers determines how much customers can impose pressure on
margins and volumes. In case of Keltron its major customers are the
government mainly traffic police as well as ISRO hence the bargaining power
of buyers is moderate because there are large players in the market.
13
cost of competition is high. Despite that Keltron has competitors between the
existing firms it has a low market growth.

for move. In keltron there is a specific division known as faculty and
organization, which sees to both work force and managerial capacities. The
workers encounter extends from 12 to 25 years. The organization has a Human
Resource Development program whereby instructional courses at work is given.
Key specialized work force are prepared by colleagues of providers of
apparatus to supervise on the handling of the capacitor and upkeep of hardware.
Personal and administration role, welfare role and industrial relation role. The
human resource in an organization should be motivated and managed with at
