Organization, group or program description

Music for Cheers is a local volunteer organization that I created to benefit both the children and retired
citizens in my community. The youth performers practice their talents in their musical instruments and
share their hard work with the residents at the retirement homes who often times do not have many
visitors. The organization instills the importance of community service in the lives of the youth and brings
joy to the senior citizens.

Description of volunteer experience

Organizing this group was stressful in the beginning because I was the sole coordinator of the youth
performers and lone scheduler of the performances. Our group now has several recitals under our belt
and I have put together a format that others will easily be able to follow when I leave for college. I hope

Personal insight questions

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively

influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

One of the most meaningful leadership roles I have held was as a staff member at a
Boy Scouts of America National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course. I spent
eight months training for my role as a patrol leader and developing training
materials for my section of the course. During the course, I was tasked with
guiding aspiring youth scout leaders through challenging team-building and
problem-solving exercises.

In my patrol, there was a boy with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

(ADHD). His condition not only caused problems for himself, but his outbursts and
disruptive behavior also made it more difficult for the rest of the group to focus.
While surveying this overwhelming complication, I recalled a similar situation
from my own time spent as a participant in the course. When I was in my small
group, my peers and I found collective success with a group member who had
anger issues by resorting to the principles I was taught in Catholic school from
Matthew 7:12: "do unto others what you would have them do unto you." So, I had
a talk with each group member individually in which I shared this Bible passage
and emphasized that they keep in mind our common goal for the course: learn how
to interact with and set an example for others. Talking with each individual
demonstrated to them that leadership is not limited to hands-on guidance, but
also building character with empathy for others. From that point, both the
participant with ADHD and his peers joined in taking a new approach to the course
in which they were motivated to learn different methods of solving problems. My
group went on to win many camp awards. But most important, I instilled in them
what I believe are the most essential aspects of a leader: commitment, forward-
thinking, compassion and empathy.

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem
solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how
you express your creative side.

An impromptu is a short, moving piano piece that is often improvised. Mastered

by composers like Schubert and Chopin, these works brilliantly flip the keys of the
instrument into an open canvas for artists to express themselves. No given tempo,
dynamics, or key; just an outlet for pianists to freely display their passion.

My daily life is filled with restrictions and rules. I attend math class to learn how to
find the right answer, and go to basketball practice to consistently put the ball
through the hoop. While running my mom's errands, I pay attention to traffic laws
along the way. However, when I come home and sit down in front of the piano, I
play an impromptu piece without any rules holding me back. Chord by chord, I
produce sounds full of heart and soul, indicative of the passionate mood I am often
lost in some days. On others when I am feeling gloomy and uninspired, I translate
these emotions into slow, soft melodies. Rain or shine, playing this beautiful
instrument allows me to reflect on my day and record significant events, similar to
how writers illustrate their life in journals. Piano steals my attention away from
everything else, altering my state of mind like a drug.

My grandfather told us that if God gave you a gift, He meant for you to share it
with others. Because playing the piano for my grandparents brought them so
much joy, I looked for ways to share my talents with others. Looking up to my
older siblings as they served the community, I also tried to be an example of
servant leadership. I helped organize events such as performances at retirement
homes for younger musicians to showcase their talents and spread some cheer to
the residents, many of whom receive few visitors.

I am very grateful for the gift that music has brought to my life. It has not only
been my own emotional remedy and outlet, but also a way for me to bring joy and
make a difference in the lives of others.

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and
demonstrated that talent over time?

The Rubik's Cube is a challenging puzzle that requires one to use his or her logic
and prior knowledge to arrange each of the six colors of the cube on their own
separate sides. There are a number of outlets I have found to display my skills and
talents in life, from playing basketball to performing a beautiful piano piece on
stage, but one that stands out is solving the Rubik's Cube. My method of solving
the cube, applied to my daily life, involves organizing my many interests and
activities in a manner such that allows me to pursue my goals in many areas at
once. The numerous moves and algorithms utilized for the puzzle coincide with
the strategies I use to balance my life.

The six sides of my Rubik's Cube are basketball, piano, work, Boy Scouts, church,
and school Most solutions to the puzzle require working layer by layer and

and school. Most solutions to the puzzle require working layer by layer and
determining which side to begin solving. The first step in managing my interests is
prioritizing them. With education as a top priority, this was my first side to solve,
which is maintained throughout the solution process. Building the next layer of
the cube involved permuting two-sided edge pieces with contrasting colors.
Symbolically, this step is completed by combining two activities. I collectively
implemented years of piano experience into volunteering as the leader of my
church youth choir. The final layer is solved in two parts; first the pieces must be
oriented so that the top face is one color, then they must be arranged so that the
other dimensions of the pieces match the corresponding sides. This was the most
challenging step for me, as I took on leadership roles in all of my activities while
keeping up in school. My final algorithms involved scheduling and eliminating
distractions like TV and my phone.

Essentially, my greatest skill is solving my own Rubik's Cube of life. The skills I
developed in managing my responsibilities will continue to help me pursue my
many goals in the future, taking each challenge in stride without "peeling the
stickers" for shortcuts.

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken
to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic
achievement?

I attended a small catholic school from grades Kindergarten through eighth grade,
during which I went to class, played tetherball, and grew up with the same fifteen
kids. Although the morals and values I learned helped shape who I am today, the
isolated community created difficulties as I transitioned to a larger, diverse
environment at a public high school. As I bridged to the next level of education, I
faced challenges in both the social and academic aspects of high school.

I enjoyed growing close with my small circle of friends for nine years, however, we
all ended up at different high schools. So, my first day of freshman year I struggled
with finding a new crew. I joined many sports and clubs to meet people, but
everyone else had gone to the feeder middle school and had established
friendships. I spent so much of my time and energy on trying to clique that I fell
behind in my studies. Fortunately, I eventually found classmates who struggled in
the same courses as me. We worked on homework and studied for tests together,
and are still friends to this day.

At Catholic school, the core curriculum was centered around the history and

teachings of the Catholic faith. In addition, the small class sizes made it difficult to
excel in the basic academic subjects. I breezed through slow-paced mathematics
and basic science classes, so I started my freshman year classes behind my peers.
Enrolled in the hardest advanced placement and honors classes, I had to work
twice as hard as my classmates, who had more experience in these rigorous
courses. After spending many long nights studying and extra time in the classroom
to better understand lectures, I was able to get by and even enjoy these classes.

Overall, the transition from my small Catholic elementary and middle school to a
bigger high school was a difficult time for me in which I was forced to adapt to a
new environment. With hard work and diligence, I was able to overcome these
hardships and succeed in high school.

Additional comments

Sadly, as I finalized college applications, my family and I experienced the unexpected death of my
grandfather. He was a big influence on all of our lives and it was tough to focus on what I want to do for
the future without my grandfather who I had discussed my plans with on many occasions. I am not
including this because I want special consideration. I just wanted to honor my grandfather by making him
a part of this endeavor.

My four years of high school were filled with constant worry for my family, specifically one of my sisters.
We had a scare with her mental health during my freshman year, which is something that changed my
outlook on life. I became more sensitive to what people might be going through instead of thinking only of
my goals and my path.
