Slavery

Gizelle Sinclair introduces herself as one of Jamaica's seven national heroes. The document then provides details about slavery in Jamaica, including how it began with the Spanish capturing the Taino people and later Africans to work on farms. Conditions for slaves were inhumane, as they received poor treatment, housing, healthcare and no time for family while doing nonstop work. While slavery made Britain wealthy through trade of sugar, rum and molasses, this wealth did not benefit the slaves or Jamaica. Gizelle recommends that Britain and Spain compensate Jamaica for the impacts of slavery.

My name is Gizelle Sinclair

I am one of the seven national heroes

What is slavery?

Slavery in Jamaica

Slavery began in Jamaica in the year of 1494 and ended in 1834,however it was not officialy over in
1834 .In 1838 slavery was officialy abolished in Jamaica. The Spanish captured the island and forced
Tainos to work for them. In addition the tainos could not endure the work the Spanish had forced them
to do so the tainos had died from overwork and diseases. The Spanish noticed that the tainos had been
dying so they decided to capture the Africans to work on there farm or hatos. They said that the Africans
would be better workers because they are strong, hardworking and could work long hot hours in the
sun.

Condition of Slaves in Jamaica

Slaves were treated in inhumane treatment, lack of education limited resistance, poor housing facilities,
poor health care, no time for families, nonstop work, harshly treated on the plantations.

How the British benefits from slavery

During slavery the British would have sold products such as sugar ,rum and molasses from sugar cane
using slave labour. The money gained from the trade of these product would of made Britain a wealthy
country . This wealth did not benefit slaves or the country such as Jamaica.

Recommendation for Compensation to Jamaica

I am recommending that the British and the Spanish government compensate Jamaica for the effects of
slavery.
