SP-2019 Completion Log Specification

1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This Specification describes general requirements for delivering Completion Logs as
part of the process of delivering Exploration Wells.

The Completion Log (CL) is a mandatory document, summarizing most of the

important information acquired from the well. The delivery of the CL is the formal
close-out of the well delivery process. With the sign-off of the CL the Exploration
team formally confirms to PDO management and to the Ministry of Oil and Gas that
all data acquired from the well has been quality controlled and loaded into the
appropriate systems.

Completion Logs have been delivered for many years in PDO. The purpose of this
new document is to
• clarify the formal status of the CL
• clarify the roles, responsibilities and procedures for creating the CL
• give an overview of the data in the CL and the formats for publishing this data

1.2 References
Within the Control Management Framework, this Specification relates to the
following other Specifications:

• SP-1000 “PDO Well, Hole, Field Naming convention”

5
SP-2019 Completion Log Specification

2. Scope
This Specification applies to the Completion Logs (CL) created for all Exploration
wells drilled by PDO since 1 Jan 2005.

2.1 Definitions
2.1.1 Standards
• Well name. The well name used in the Completion Log follows the standard
PDO Well naming convention (SP-1000).
• Well symbols. The Well symbols follow the standard Shell Group Standard
Legend (see revised version issued by SIEP in 1995, page 24 and onwards)
• Lithology symbols and colours. The Lithology follows the standard Shell
Group Standard Legend (1995), page 67 onwards. Also see appendix 4 for a
short overview.
• PDO Well file index – this is the list of document types related to a Well. The
CL is listed as Document type 3.16. All CL’s to be loaded into Livelink need
to be loaded under document type 3.16.

2.1.2 Systems
• WinLogPro – the software in use since May 2004 for the creation of
Completion Logs in PDO, acquired under contract C211038 until December
2009. WinLog Pro is delivered by Rees Oil & Gas Services LLC (see also
www.hrh.ltd.uk). Winlog Pro is included in PDO’s long term strategy for
completion logs. Renewal of the WinLogPro contract is the responsibility of
U11B1
• Oilfield Data Manager (ODM) - this software used to make correlation panel
in the footer for completion log.
• Livelink – this is the electronic document management system in PDO
• Power Explorer – this is the user interface on the corporate subsurface
database (RegeoNT).
• Recall Data base- Most of the logs data to be used in Winlog Pro originates
from Recall.

2.2 Deliverables
2.2.1 Business Records
The following business records are described as deliverables of the Completion Log
team in this Specification:
• The Completion Log (CL). One CL is delivered per Exploration Well. It is
possible to create more than one if the well has multiple holes. The completion
logs are stored in Livelink and designated provisional or final. Completion
logs are included as enclosures or links in the well resumes.
• The Completion Log Template. Each CL is created making use of a standard
template available in WinLog Pro. The standard template and its description
are is available for each WinLog Pro user.
• Completion Log work flow. Each CL is created making use of the CL
procedure description report, which is a step by step description of how to
create a CL.

6
SP-2019 Completion Log Specification

2.2.2 Reports
The CL Tracking Sheet. The progress of completion log completion logs is updated
by XGL31 on the weekly highlights spreadsheet and discussed on monthly bases with
XGL & XGL3 and reported status monthly to Exploration teams Managers.

4.1 Completion Log Contents

4.1.1 Header
The Header is containing mostly general well information (Table 1):
• Name of the well
• Well Symbol (graphically depicting the result of the well)
• Location Map
• Depth Map
• Seismic or cross section
• Summary Results
• Summarized Petrophysical evaluation
• Well Trajectory (for deviated or horizontal wells)

All this information is provided by the team responsible for the well, it is mainly the
well summary sheet in TIFF or PPT or PDF format).

Additionally the Legend of symbols (lithology, well symbols, etc.) can be found in the
header. This Legend is standard and follows the Shell Standard Legend.

A text indicating clearly the objective, result and implications would optionally be at
the header below the well summary sheet.

4.1.2 Body
The Body contains all depth dependent information. Most of this data is loaded from
the corporate database via Power Explorer. A data type – data source – responsibility
matrix is in Appendix 2.
• Lithostrat
• Chronostratigraphy; if there is dating
• ROP log
• Gas reading
• Mud Data
• Bit Data
• Casing information
• Standard Logs (Gamma Ray, Sonic, Neutron, Density, Caliper, Porosity,
Saturation, Resistivity, Flame ( Appendix 2b)
• Side Wall Samples
• Core information
• Hydro Carbon Shows, Hydro Carbon Type
• Gas readings
• Lithology (interpretation + description)
• Calcimetry
• Deviations
• Dip data
• Additional remarks

4.1.3 Footer
The Footer contains detailed well evaluation & test summary information as well as a
listing of the log runs. (Table 2).

Note that test summary information usually arrives several months after the well has
reached TD, and therefore the delivery of this data should not be counted in the

11
SP-2019 Completion Log Specification

tracking of completeness of the CL. A provisional version of the CL can be published

if the well is suspended with a plan to be tested later.

4.2 Format
The CL is created making use of the PDO standard software WinLog Pro. The XGL3
team has set up a standard template in WinLogPro for the Exploration Completion
Log. This format should be used for all Exploration CL’s.

An example of the format of the CL following the standard template is in Appendix 1.

4.3 Close-out
A CL is final when all required data have been included in the header/body/footer and
when the exploration team and leader has signed off the CL, effectively agreeing to
completeness of the CL and that all data available at the time have been incorporated
and is of the right level of quality.

5. Performance Monitoring
Completion Logs need to be delivered 6 months after TD has reached of the well. The
delivery of a Completion Log after all data has been received and corrected takes on
average 5 months. Therefore all well owners/Seismic interpreters in Exploration need
to deliver all the required data 30 days after the well reached TD.
It is the responsibility of the Oil Exploration North Manager (XNM), Oil Exploration
South Manager (XSM), and Gas Exploration Manager (XGM) that data is delivered
on time (e.g. entered in Power Explorer / RUI) with the right level of quality and it is
the responsibility of the XGL31 team to deliver the CL after the data has been
received.

The XGL3 team is monitoring the delivery of the data per well, per data type and
reports this to the Exploration Operations meeting on a monthly basis. An example is
in the report is in Appendix 3.

6. Review and Improvement

Any user of this document who wishes to provide constructive feedback, or who
encounters a mistake or confusing entry is requested to immediately notify the
Document Author or Custodian.

This document shall be reviewed as necessary by the Document Custodian, but no

less frequently than every two years.
