Formal Invitations & Replies

Extending invitations to their friends and relatives on the occasions like marriage,
birthday, engagement, death, public function etc. is a part of social etiquettes. It can be
in the form of an invitation card which is a formal way of inviting people or it can be in the
form of a note or a letter which is a more informal way of inviting somebody.

Features of a Formal Invitation

1. It is a single sentence presentation.


2. It is written in the Third person.
3. There is no signature.
4. The address is written at the bottom of the invitation.
5. The date of writing is not given.
6. The Simple Present Tense is used.
7. The lay out of the letter is such that each of the following is written in a separate line:

(a) name of the host


(b) the Standard expression
(c) the reason of the invitation
(d) Day, date and time of the event.
(e) venue of the event

8. Inline commas are used.


9. Skip end of line punctuation.

Format of a Formal Invitation

1. Name(s) of the Host(s)


2. Standard expression: (Select any one of the following expression)

(a) request the pleasure of your company


(b) solicit your gracious presence
(c) cordially invite you to
(d) cordially request the honour of your presence
(e) invite you to join
(f) request your benign presence
(g) seek the pleasure of your presence

3. Purpose of the invitation (birthday/marriage/inauguration/celebration of historic day


etc.)
4. Name of the honoree (birthday person, bride, groom etc.)
5. Day, date and time of the party/function /programme.
6. Name of the place location with complete address.
7. RSVP (French expression : Respndez s’il vous plait means : Respond if it pleases
you. (Pronunciation= re-spawn-day-sill-voo-play)
8. Just below RSVP write the telephone/mobile No. or address of the host.
