I Week. Basic Functions of A Computer

The four basic functions of a computer are input, processing, output, and storage. Input involves entering information into the computer through devices like a keyboard or mouse. Processing is performing operations on data using the CPU. Output displays the processed data through monitors or speakers. Storage saves data on devices even when the computer is off. The operating system helps the computer perform these four basic functions, allowing users to complete tasks like working, shopping, communicating, and storing important information.

What Are Basic (=fundamentak, main, primary)

Functions of a Computer?

The four basic functions of a computer are: a) input, b)

processing, c) output and d) storage.
Input is the information which is entered into the
computer.
Processing is perform (=execute)ing operations on
or manipulating data.
Output is the result of the data processing.
Storage means to store (=to keep, to save) the data
when the computer is deactivated.

What does this acronym stand for? It stands for ……..

Input devices on a modern computer include

(=contain, consist of, involve) the keyboard, mouse and
disk drives. The central processing unit (CPU) processes
the data. Devices such as (= like) read only memory
(ROM), the hard drive, compact disk(c)s (CDs) and digital

versatile disks (DVDs = Digital Video Disk(c)) can store
the data. Output devices include the monitor, speakers,
printer and rewritable CD and DVD disk drives.

When you input information into your computer

with the mouse or keyboard, you're sending a signal to
the CPU. The CPU has a logic unit that can do basic
arithmetic. The control unit directs the computer to
execute programs that have been stored in memory. The
speed by which a computer executes programs is
measured in millions of instructions per second (MIPS);
the processor's speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz).
When the information has been processed, it is output in
a human-readable form through the monitor and
speakers. It can also be stored again for later processing.
Storage media (medium)can be used to both input and
output data.

The operating system (OS) helps the computer to

perform four basic operations. The four basic functions
of a computer make it possible for us to perform many
tasks that were previously impossible. Using a computer,

you can balance your checkbook, purchase merchandise,
send and receive messages, do research, process your
photographs, create music and store crucial data, among
other things. If you have essential computer skills you
can find better employment for higher pay. Because
computers are easily networked, they can help people
from remote parts of the world communicate more
quickly and easily than with traditional methods.

Task 1: Decide are the following statements True or

False?

True or
N Sentence
False?
1 The operating system helps the
computer perform operations.
2 Output comes from the keyboard.
3 Input data comes from printer.
4 The Internet can be used for the
output and input of data.
5 Data can only be stored inside the

computer.

Task 2: Find an example from the text for each of the

following action words and translate them. You may
have to add "s" or "ing".

Task 3: Decide are the following statements True or
False?

True or
N Sentence
False?
1 Hardware can be read
2 Programs describe the hardware
instructions
3 Computer system has two main
components
4 Software can be touched

A computer system consists of hardware and software

components. Hardware is the physical equipment such
as the case, keyboards, monitors, cables, speakers, and
printers. The term software describes the programs that
are used to operate the computer system. Computer
software runs on hardware. Computer software also
called programs, instructs the computer on how to
operate. These operations include identify
(=recognize)ing, accessing, and processing information.
5
A program is a sequence of instructions that describe
how data should be processed. Programs vary (=differ)
(different = various) widely, depending on the type of
information that should be accessed or generated.
Task 3: Change the verbs in the sentences to convey the
same idea:
work differ contain executes
1. Programs vary widely.
2. The operating system performs various operations.
3. Computer software instructs the computer on how
to operate.
4. Basic operations include identifying, accessing, and
processing information.
