Thickener Problems MO

The document provides 7 problems related to thickener design based on batch settling test data. The problems require determining thickener area, diameter, or other specifications based on settling rate and concentration data to handle specific throughput rates and achieve target underflow concentrations.

EXERCISE PROBLEMS BASED ON THICKENER DESIGN

1. 1000 tones/day of a suspension are to be thickened from 186 g/L to 1200 g/L in a continuous
thickener. Batch settling data on feed material gave the following data
Z (cm) 90 60 42 27 19 7.5 6.0 5.5 4.5 4.0
ϴ (hr) 0 0.1 0.25 0.5 0.75 2 2.6 3.0 3.4 4.0
Where Z= Height of settling interface (cm); ϴ = settling time (hr). Determine the maximum
thickener area required.

2. A batch sedimentation test was carried out upon silica slurry with water. Initial concentration
was 0.125 g/cc of slurry. The settling data is given below. Final height of settled solids are 5.53
cm. Determine the maximum cross sectional area of continuous thickener to handle 150
tones/day of dry solids to a final concentration of 0.375 g/cc of slurry.
Z (cm) 34 25 20 15 10 7.5 6.4 6.1 5.9
ϴ (min) 0 10.8 16.8 26.4 43.1 65.8 89.3 100 110
Where Z= Height of settling interface (cm); ϴ = settling time (min).
3. The data given below are obtained from a single batch sedimentation test on an ore slurry.
Determine the maximum cross sectional area required for the thickener to handle 100 lit/day.
If solids from a feed concentration of 64.5 g/L to an underflow concentration of 485 g/L
CL (g/L) 64.5 70.9 94.3 111.7 139.9 173.9 222 331
VL (cm/hr) 139.9 103.6 71.9 49.4 27.1 16.8 10 6.40
Where CL= Concentrations of solids (g/L); VL = Settling rate (cm/hr)

4. Determine the maximum cross sectional area needed for a thickener to produce an underflow
concentration of 15,000 mg/L from a feed containing 2000 mg/L of suspended solids. Flow to
the thickener is to be 0.4 x 106 gal (UK)/day. Settling tests were performed using a 5 ft cylinder
Height of settling interface Z (ft) 5 3.9 1.9 1.1 0.95 0.8
Settling time ϴ (min) 0 5 15 30 45 60

5. A 3 percent by weight CaCO3 slurry was subjected to a batch sedimentation test. The density
of the solids was 2.63 g/cc and that of the liquid was 1 g/cc. The test results are indicated below
Z (m) 176 100 74 57 42 34 26 18
ϴ (min) 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140
Where Z= Height of settling interface (m); ϴ = settling time (min).
Determine the maximum cross sectional area of a continuous thickener that is to handle
4,00,000 kg of solids per day. If the initial solid concentration in the feed is 3% by weight and
the final concentration is be 40% by weight of solids.
6. Wastewater from a de-inking plant is to be clarified by continuous sedimentation. Feed to the
thickener is one million gal/day containing 1.20 percent by weight solids. The underflow from
the unit analyzes 8 percent solids. Specify the diameter of the thickener. A single batch settling
test on the feed material gave the following information. Specific gravity of solids = 2.00;
specific gravity of water = 1.00
Z (cm) 31 21 10 3.2 2.2 2.1 2.0 1.96 1.94
ϴ (min) 0 5 10 20 40 60 180 240 ∞
Where Z= Height of settling interface (cm); ϴ = settling time (min).

7. 40 tons/hr of a metallurgical pulp are to be thickened from 186 g/L to 1200 g/L by
sedimentation. Batch settling data on the feed material gave the following information
Pulp height (ft) 3 2 1.4 0.9 0.68 0.48 0.25 0.1
ϴ (hr) 0 0.1 0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 2.0 4.0
What diameter of thickener is required to accomplish the specified assignment? The specific
gravity of solid = 4.44
