Diffrent Types of IVF

This document summarizes different types of intravenous (IV) fluids, their concentrations, and common conditions for which they are used. It lists 7 common IV fluids including normal saline, lactated ringers, dextrose solutions, sodium chloride solutions, and discusses whether they are isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic. For each fluid, it provides a brief description of conditions where that specific IV fluid would be applicable or recommended. References are included at the bottom.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF IV FLUIDS

IVF CONCENTRATION CONDITIONS APPLICABLE
Normal Saline Solution Isotonic  To treat low extracellular fluid, as in fluid volume deficit from
hemorrhage, severe vomiting and diarrhea, heavy drainage
from GI suction, fistulas, or wounds.
 Shock
 Mild hyponatremia
 Metabolic Acidosis (such as diabetic ketoacidosis)
 It’s the fluid choice for resuscitation efforts.
 it’s the only fluid used with administration of blood products
Lactated Ringer’s Isotonic  To replace GI tract fluid losses (Diarrhea and vomiting)
 Fistula drainage
 Fluid losses due to burns and trauma
 Patients experiencing acute blood loss or hypovolemia due to
third space fluid shifts
Dextrose 5% water Isotonic  Fluid loss and dehydration
 Hypernatermia
 Commonly used post-operatively in conjuction with salt retaining
fluids
0.45% sodium chloride Hypotonic  Gastric fluid loss
 Cellular dehydration from excessive diuresis
 Slow rehydration
0.33%sodium chloride Hypotonic  Hypertension
 Hypernatermia
 Diabetic ketoacidosis
2.5% dextrose in water Hypotonic  Replace cellular fluid
 Provides free water for excretion of wastes
 Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state
D5NSS (5% Dextrose in Hypertonic  Heat related disorders
normal saline solution)  Fresh water drowning
 Peritonitis
 Avoid in impaired cardiac and renal function
D5 in 0.45% NaCl ( 5% Hypertonic  Heat exhaustion
Dextrose in half  Diabetic disorders
strength normal saline)  TKO solution in patients with renal or cardiac dysfunction
D5LR (5% Dextrose in Hypertonic  Hypovolemic shock
Lactated Ringer's  Hemorrhagic shock
Solution)  Certain cases of acidosis
3% NaCl Hypertonic  Severe hyponatremia
 Cerebral edema
