Installation Instructions
 Check for proper supply before making connection to the instrument.

 Ensure proper earthing of the instrument.

 In case of RTD input, use 3- core shielded wire between RTD sensor and input terminals of
the instrument. The shield of the wire should be earthed nearer to the instrument only.

 For T/C type input, ensure that the compensating cable is not broken, is free of joints and is
of proper type.

 For T/C type input, for stability of reading, use shielded compensating cable with shield
earthed nearer to the instrument only.

 Please ensure that the cabling does not pickup RF signals.

 Heat generating sources should not be present near the instrument.

 RF/ EMI / Vibrations generating sources should not be near to the instrument.

Operating Procedure
 Introduction : SMARTCON – 4000 is advanced micro controller based Universal Indicator &
Universal Controller with dual set points respectively with field selectable inputs and field
programmable facility with just 3 keys.
 Front Face Description :

 Parameterisation of Smartcon – 4000


(A) Selection of Inputs :
(Selection of desired input is done by setting the DIP switch & then selecting the
desired input by software [steps 1 to 14] )
1. Locate the DIP Switch (Blue Colour) at the back plate.
2. Various switch setting which will be corresponding to the input selected are as follows :

3. Switch on the Instrument.

6. Process value will be displayed.


7. Press mode key till is displayed (approx 10 sec).
8. Release mode key.

9. (select input) will be displayed & previously selected i/p will be


displayed. If input is as required, then press mode key & goto step 13.
10. Press up key.
11. Select choice of input by pressing up and down key.

12. Press mode key to save & select the input.


13. In case the input selected is T/C & RTD, go to "Configuring Parameters for T/C &
RTD" (Step B1).
14. In case the input selected is mA & Volt, then go to "Configuring Parameters for 4-
20 mA / 1-5 V & 0-1 V / 0-5 V / 0-10 V input" (Step B2).

(B1) Configuring parameters for T/C & RTD :

1. (Set point 1) will be displayed for 1 sec.


2. The previous setpoint will be displayed.
3. By pressing up & down key, the desired setting could be obtained. The up &
down increment/decrement is dynamic i.e. the increment & decrement of display
reading depends on the amount of time the key is pressed. More is time, faster is
the value incremented or decremented.
4. Press mode key to save the reading.

5. (Set point 2) is displayed for 1 sec.


6. The previous setpoint will be displayed.
7. Set the desired reading by pressing up & down keys and save the reading by
pressing mode key.
8. (Dead Band) is displayed for 1 sec.
9. The previous dead band will be displayed.
10. Set the desired reading by using up & down keys and save the reading by
pressing mode key. (Refer page 16 for setpoint & deadband effect).

11. (Alarm type 1) is displayed for 1 sec.


12. The previous alarm type will be displayed.
13. Set alarm type Hi or Lo by pressing up & down key respectively and save the
reading by pressing mode key.

14. (Alarm type 2) is displayed for 1 sec.


15. The previous alarm type will be displayed.
16. Set alarm type Hi or Lo by pressing up & down key respectively and save the
reading by pressing mode key.

17. ( zero range) is displayed for 1 sec.


18. The previous zero value will be displayed.
19. Set the desired reading by using up & down key and save the reading by
pressing mode key.

20. ( span range) is displayed for 1 sec.


21. The previous span value will be displayed.
22. Set the desired reading by pressing up & down key and save the reading by
pressing mode key.
NOTE: The Zero range & Span range parameters are different for RTD, Group2
thermocouples (J, K, N & E) & Group1 thermocouples (R, S & T) i.e. any change
in range for thermocouples (J, K, N & E) will not affect the other inputs. For

group2 thermocouples (J, K, N & E) there is one Zero range & Span range
parameter i.e. if the user has calibrated ‘J’ T/C with range 0-600 and if user
wants to calibrate ‘N’ T/C with range 0-1300 , then the user has to change the
range parameters. Same is applicable for Group1 thermocouples (R, S & T).
23. If input selected is Pt-100 (RTD) go to step 26.

24. (set room temperature) will be displayed for 2 sec.


25. Using up & down keys, set the desired temperature and save the value by
pressing mode key.

26. (Calibration) is displayed.


27. will be displayed.
28. Set calibration yes or no by pressing up & down key respectively.
29. In case if calibration is desired, proceed further by pressing mode key, else go to
run mode (Step D) by pressing mode & down keys simultaneously.
30. For calibration of J, K, E, N, go to Step C1.
31. For calibration of R, S, T type thermocouples, go to Step C2.
32. For calibration of Pt-100, go to Step C3.

(B2) Configuring parameters for 4-20 mA / 1-5 V & 0-1 V / 0-5 V / 0-10 V input :
1. Previously selected decimal point is displayed.
2. Select decimal point as per the chart

- no decimal point (XXXXX)

- decimal point at ten's place (XXXX•X).

- decimal point at hundred's place (XXX•XX).

- decimal point at thousand's place (XX•XXX).

- decimal point at ten thousand's place (X•XXXX).


3. Select decimal point by pressing up & down key and save the decimal point's
location by pressing mode key.

4. (Set point 1) will be displayed for 1 sec.


5. The previous setpoint will be displayed.
6. By pressing up & down key, the desired setting could be obtained. The up & down

11. (Square root) is displayed for 1 sec.


12. Previously selected Yes or no will be displayed.
13. Set square root Yes or No by pressing up & down key respectively and save the
reading by pressing mode key.
14. (Dead Band) is displayed for 1 sec.
15. The previous dead band will be displayed.
16. Set the desired reading by using up & down keys and save the reading by
pressing mode key. (Refer page 16 for setpoint & deadband effect).
17. (Alarm type 1) is displayed for 1 sec.
18. The previous alarm type will be displayed.
19. Set alarm type Hi or Lo by pressing up & down key respectively and save the
reading by pressing mode key.

20. (Alarm type 2) is displayed for 1 sec.


21. The previous alarm type will be displayed.
22. Set alarm type Hi or Lo by pressing up & down key respectively and save the
reading by pressing mode key.

23. ( Zero range) is displayed for 2 sec.


24. The previous Zero value will be displayed.
25. Using up and down keys, set the desired reading and save the reading by
pressing mode key.

26. ( Span range) is displayed for 2 sec.


27. The previous Span value will be displayed.
28. Using up and down keys, set the desired reading and save the reading by
pressing mode key.
NOTE: The Zero range & Span range parameter is common for all linear i/ps.

29. (Calibration) is displayed.


30. will be displayed.
31. Set calibration Yes or no by pressing up & down key respectively.
32. In case if calibration is desired, then proceed further by pressing
mode key, else go to run mode (Step D) by pressing mode & down keys
simultaneously.
33. For calibration of 4-20mA / 1-5 Volt, go to Step C4.

34. For calibration of 0-1 Volt / 0-5 V / 0-10 Volt, go to Step C5.
(C1) Calibration for J, K, E, N (Group 2 thermocouples):

1. is displayed.
2. will be displayed.
3. If mode & down keys are pressed simultaneously, then calibration will be

bypassed, will be displayed and instrument will return to run mode.


4. Press down key. is displayed. If mode & down keys are pressed

simultaneously, then calibration will be bypassed, will be displayed and


instrument will return to run mode.

5. If still calibration is desired, press up key. is displayed.


6. Press mode key.

7. (Group 2 Zero) is displayed.


8. Feed mV of positive Zero at TC+(16) & TC-(14) and press down key. (Eg. In
case Zero is 0, feed 0 mV or short terminals. In case Zero is any positive value
greater than 0, feed mV corresponding to that).
9. Some reading will be displayed.
10. Pressing mode key will save the value.

11. (Group 2 Positive Span) will be displayed.


12. Feed mV of positive span at TC+(16) & TC-(14) and press down key.
13. Some reading will be displayed.
14. Press mode key to save the value.

15. (Group 2 Negative Span) will be displayed.


16. Feed mV of negative span at TC+(16) & TC-(14) ( The –ve of mV source should
be connected to TC+ & +ve of mV source should be connected to TC-) and press
down key. (Eg. In case Zero is 0 or greater than 0, feed 0 mV or short terminals.
In case Zero is less than 0, feed mV corresponding to that).
17. Some reading will be displayed.

18. Press mode & down keys simultaneously to save the value. will be
displayed for some time, then the instrument will return to the run mode (Step D).

(C2) Calibration of R, S, T thermocouples (Group 1 thermocouples):

1. is displayed.
2. will be displayed.
3. If mode & down keys are pressed simultaneously, then calibration will be

bypassed, will be displayed and instrument will return to run mode.
4. Press down key. is displayed. If mode & down keys are pressed

simultaneously, then calibration will be bypassed, will be displayed and


instrument will return to run mode.

5. If still calibration is desired, press up key. is displayed.


6. Press mode key.

7. (Group1 Zero) is displayed.


8. Feed mV of Zero and press down key. (Eg. In case Zero is 0, feed 0 mV or short
terminals. In case Zero is any positive value greater than 0, feed mV corresponding
to that).
9. Some reading will be displayed.
10. Pressing mode key will save the value.

11. (Group 1 Span) will be displayed.


12. Feed mV of Span at TC+(16) & TC-(14) and press down key.
13. Some reading will be displayed.
14. Press mode key to save the value.

15. (Group 2 Negative Span) will be displayed.


16. Feed 0 mV or short terminals TC+(16) and TC-(14) and press down key.
17. Some reading will be displayed.

18. Press mode & down keys simultaneously to save the value. will be
displayed for some time, then the instrument will return to the run mode (Step D).

(C3) Calibration of Pt-100 RTD:

1. is displayed.
2. will be displayed.
3. If mode & down keys are pressed simultaneously, then calibration will be

bypassed, will be displayed and instrument will return to run mode.


4.Press down key. is displayed. If mode & down keys are pressed

simultaneously, then calibration will be bypassed, will be displayed and


instrument will return to run mode.

5. If still calibration is desired, press up key. is displayed.


6. Press mode key.

7. is displayed.
8. Feed ohms of Zero at A(12), B(13) & b(14) terminals and press down key.

9. Some reading will be displayed.
10. Pressing mode key will save the value.

11. will be displayed.


12. Feed ohms of span at A(12), B(13) & b(14) terminals and press down key.
13. Some reading will be displayed.

14. Press mode & down keys simultaneously to save the value. will be
displayed for some time, then the instrument will return to the run mode (Step D).

(C4) Calibration of 4-20 mA / 1-5 Volt :

15. is displayed.
16. will be displayed.
17. If mode & down keys are pressed simultaneously, then calibration will be

bypassed, will be displayed and instrument will return to run mode.


18. Press down key. is displayed. If mode & down keys are pressed

simultaneously, then calibration will be bypassed, will be displayed and


instrument will return to run mode.

19. If still calibration is desired, press up key. is displayed.


20. Press mode key.
21. is displayed.
22. Feed 4.00 mA at mA+(15) & mA-(14) and press down key (Ensure that two
parallel 100 Ω 1/4 w 1% MFR are present between these terminals).
or
If input selected is 1-5 V, then feed 1 Volt at mA+(15) & mA-(14) and press down
key.
23. Some reading will be displayed.
24. Press mode key to save the value.

25. will be displayed.


26. Feed 20 mA at mA+(15) & mA-(14) and press down key.
or
If input selected is 1-5 V then feed 5 Volt at mA+(15) & mA-(14) and press down
key.
27. Some reading will be displayed.

28. Press mode & down keys simultaneously to save the value. will be
displayed for some time, then the instrument will return to the run mode (Step D).

(C5) Calibration of 0-1 V / 0-5V / 0-10 V input:

1. is displayed.
2. will be displayed.
3. If mode & down keys are pressed simultaneously, then calibration will be

bypassed, will be displayed and instrument will return to run mode.


4. Press down key. is displayed. If mode & down keys are pressed

simultaneously, then calibration will be bypassed, will be displayed and


instrument will return to run mode.

5. If still calibration is desired, press up key. is displayed.


6. Press mode key.

7. is displayed.
8. Feed 0.0 Volt at V+(15) & V-(14) and press down key.
9. Some reading will be displayed.
10. Press mode key to save the value.
11. will be displayed.
12. Feed 1.0 Volt at V+(15) & V-(14) and press down key.
or
If input selected is 0-5 V, then feed 5 Volt at V+(15) & V-(14) and press down key.
or
If input selected is 0-10 V, then feed 10 Volt at V+(15) & V-(14) and press down
key.
13. Some reading will be displayed.

14. Press mode & down keys simultaneously to save the value. will be
displayed for some time, then the instrument will return to the run mode (Step D).

(D) Run Mode :


(This is normal operating mode of the instrument where process value is
displayed & alarm relays are operated.)
1. Pressing up key for 3 sec will show room temperature. (Invalid for RTD, mA &
Volts input).
2. Pressing down key for 3 sec will show the input selected.
3. Press up and down keys simultaneously & release the keys. After some time

is displayed then set point 1 is displayed and after 1 second, is


displayed then set point 2 is displayed & then process value is displayed.

In case of 0-1V, 0-5V & 0-10V inputs, when i/p is fed as 0, in open sensor condition,
Zero range will be displayed.

 Input Limit Condition :

1. will be displayed in case the input fed is above the specified limit.

2. will be displayed in case the input fed is below the specified limit.

 Error Message Displayed :

To rectify the above proceed as follows :


1. Switch off the instrument.
2. Keep down key pressed.
3. Switch on the power.

4. is displayed.
5. Release down key.

6. will be displayed.
7. Recalibrate the instrument.

NOTE : While configuring parameters, one can come out of keyboard at any
time by pressing mode & down keys simultaneously. Once calibration
option ‘yes’ is selected, then one can come out of keyboard only after
calibration by pressing mode & down key.
