STA101 For 3 Hr. Class

This document contains a course syllabus for Basic Statistics (STA 101) at Colegio de San Lorenzo for the 2009-2010 academic year. The course is a 3-unit prerequisite course that covers descriptive statistics, probability, probability distributions, statistical inference, and regression analysis. It aims to teach students statistical principles, terminology, techniques, and critical thinking skills to analyze statistical data in business and economics. The syllabus outlines topics, objectives, contents, evaluation methods, and time allotment over 15 weeks.

COLEGIO DE SAN LORENZO

BSBA PROGRAM
COURSE SYLLABUS AY 2009 – 2010

Course Title : BASIC STATISTICS

Course Number/Code : STA 101 Prepared by: Ian Walter M. Along

INSTRUCTOR
Credit Units : 3 UNITS November, 2009

Prerequisite : COLLEGE ALGEBRA (MTH 101)

Course Description : In this course, the students learn the basic concepts of statistics and how to use statistical methods with emphasis basically on descriptive
statistics. It also deals with the fundamentals of probability, probability distributions, and the use of statistical inference such as interval
estimation and testing hypothesis through chi-square and analysis of variance. Regression and correlation analysis and forecasting methods
are also taken up as statistical tools in problems related to business and economics. The students also learn how to use statistical presentations
as an aid to reporting information and to use computers to generate statistical presentation of data.

Course Objectives : At the end of this course, the student should able to
1. Discuss the general statistical principles which they will find useful regardless of their field of specialization;
2. Define statistical terms and understand the different statistical methods which will enable them to read intelligently and critically
statistical data;
3. Apply proficiently a number of important statistical techniques;
4. Demonstrate critical thinking in solving statistical problems.
